A Message from Mr Holden

Our final term of the year continues to gather pace with students, teachers and parents being fully involved in many activities.

CLASSES FOR 2017

Last week we held orientation days for new students joining Wyvern in 2017. Many of the ‘new boys’ had the opportunity to spend some time with students from their equivalent Wyvern year group providing the chance for some early friendships to emerge. Currently we are in the final stages of formulating 2017 classes. This is a detailed and rigorous process.  I will write to parents in November to inform you of the 2017 teaching arrangements for your son. On Thursday 1 December we will be holding our ‘One Up’ morning where all of our students, plus the new student intake, will meet their class teacher and class mates for 2017. Please note that the deadline for parental input into the class allocation process has long passed (end of Term 3) and as such I have to inform you that further requests from parents at this late stage cannot be considered.

STUDENT LEADERS 2017

At this time of the term we also consider which of our current Year 5 students have the potential to undertake a number of specific student leadership positions next year. We believe that leadership is firmly based on good character, sound values, high virtues and service to others. I am delighted that many of our students display such qualities. We discourage and disapprove of any sense of entitlement or expectation that a certain boy should be selected as a School Leader; this mindset runs contrary to the qualities we wish to see in our School Leaders. As there is a selection process for a limited number of named leadership positions, I understand that some very good boys may miss out; but we run the process without fear or favour, inviting input from all staff members and the students in Years 3-6.  It is a very similar process to that used in the Senior School and I believe serves us well. We use the following criteria to help us to form our judgements.

  1. Care for others
How the student has demonstrated a service ethic and a capacity to think of others: e.g. selfless behaviour, assistance provided to others, capacity to work as part of a team; in other words evidence of ‘servant leadership’.
  2. Capacity as a role model
How the student conducts himself on a day to day basis in relation to our values, standards and behavioural expectations as well as a positive contribution to the co-curricular life of the school
  3. Presentation skills
The ability of the student to speak confidently and persuasively to different audiences: e.g. large and small groups of peers and adults, in both formal and informal settings and within prepared and impromptu speaking situations.

Students also have an opportunity to nominate themselves for a leadership position. Students who do so will be required to give an impromptu speech to other students from their House on a topic provided by their teacher: Note, we intentionally do not disclose either the topic or the date of the speech.

It is important to stress that I do consider all Year 6 students to be our school leaders and role models for the rest of the school and as such I have extremely high expectations about their conduct and behaviour. A leadership training day for the whole Year 6 cohort is planned in early Term 1, 2017.

3-6 Artists of the Week

Artists of the Week goes to Years 3 and 4.

Year 3 have been studying the topic of ‘Celebrations’. They started with a chalk pastel drawing of New Years Eve fireworks! You can see the movement in the special techniques they used to create the fireworks.

Congratulations to Kevin Feeney 3B and Roman Radice 3M for their beautifully drawn Harbour Bridge fireworks.

Class 4V finished their bird paintings this week and the collage within these paintings is exceptional.

Congratulations to Zac Sherratt 4V and Aidan Lucas 4V for their beautiful bird pictures.

Faith Matters

Faith says … “It is so!”

Tony Evans writes: “A practical definition of faith I like is, acting like it’s so even when it’s not, in order that it might be so, just because God said so.” Maybe you’re saying, “That sounds like I’m supposed to pretend something’s real when it isn’t.” No. We’re talking about believing that what God says is true, even when there’s no evidence available. And the way you know you believe – is when you act on it.

Maybe you think people like Noah and Moses had it easier than we do because God spoke to them directly. True, God did speak to them, but that didn’t make their obedience any easier. Moses didn’t get to see The Ten Commandments movie and find out how it all ended. Actually, we have the advantage because we have God’s completed Word. But we still experience the turbulence of life. Ever been on an aeroplane when it started shaking or dropped? Remember how you felt when the captain spoke over the intercom, calmly explaining that this was no big deal. Your options were to have faith in the captain – or believe what you saw and felt. Depending on your choice, you either white-knuckled the rest of your flight, or relaxed and enjoyed it.

Faith takes you beyond the limits of your logic, reason and senses. It enables you to believe that if God said it, it’s true. Simply put, faith is acting as if God is telling the truth.

Year 3 Camp at Narrabeen

The time had finally arrived! Holidays were a distant memory and the countdown to camp was down to zero. We had had our bags packed for days beforehand, and the thrilling dreams of Year 3 camp keeping us up at night were now starting to become a reality – the hype and milling around classrooms, the excitement of the bus ride, the impending announcement of camp rooms and activity groups, the late night games and purposeful lack of sleep, and the range of incredible activities we’d no doubt always remember. It was hard to tell who was more excited – us or the boys…

The 2 day, overnight camp to Narrabeen was a huge success. It provided opportunities for the students to take risks, exercise resilience and take part in activities they had perhaps never experienced. All the students used the camp to initiate, strengthen and maintain friendships amongst one another, which was so wonderful to witness and be a part of. The camp called on each individual to take responsibility of their possessions and personal organisation, as well as taking the lead on clean up kitchen duties for meal times. All in all, this camp, for many students, marked the beginning of the journey from boys to men.

There are too many memorable experiences from our activities to name, however, indoor archery tried our patience, strength and aim, kayaking tested our coordination, strength and team work, the night games worked our sense of fun and enjoyment and the flying fox was excellent for taking risks and supporting each other.

Newington College and the families and friends of the Year 3 students should be very proud of their behaviour and conduct on camp. Their attitude and approach meant they all extracted the most out of the experience and should enjoy reliving each moment for years to come.

Finally, a very large and sincere thank you to the Wyvern teachers who accompanied the students on camp, Miss Brown, Mr MacRae, Ms Gray, Mr Jensen, Miss Karstrom and Ashish our GAP student.

Hugh Scott
Year 3 Team Leader

SRC Term 4 Fundraising Events & Information

This term the Wyvern community assisted by the SRC will focus our fundraising efforts on helping to improve the lives of others. There are two initiatives that will provide an opportunity for the boys and their families to support three different charity organisations.

The first event will be a ‘Crazy Sock Day’. This event will be held on the 10th November, boys are invited to bring a pair of crazy socks to school and to wear them whilst at school, in exchange for a gold coin donation. The money raised from the gold coin donations will go towards supporting our World Vision Sponsor Child.

If you don’t have any crazy socks, or you would like to support another amazing charity, Oliver Townsend 6B has organised for boys and families to be able to purchase Ronald McDonald Socks for $3.00. These can be pre-ordered by returning the order form and the cash payment to the front office (socks will be delivered to boys classrooms on the 10th Nov). A limited number of socks will also be available to purchase on the 10th Nov (unless sold out prior). Money raised from the purchase of these socks will be donated towards Ronald McDonald House.

The second fundraising opportunity is a ‘Gift Drive’ for Barnardos Gifts for Kids. Gift collection will begin on Monday the 31st October and will end on Thursday the 1st December. Last year Newington College managed to donate 491 gifts to Baranrdos annual appeal. Barnardos need our help again in reaching their target of 18,000 gift donations for children and young people aged 0-18 years. Please remember to not wrap the gifts. This assists St Barnardos to ensure that every gift is safe and that our gifts are delivered to the child that it is best suited to.
