eLearning

For Wyvern community members that I have not met yet my name is Tony Cross. This year I have moved away from the classroom where I have been teaching and in the role as team leader on Year 4 the past 2 years to a new position both at Wyvern House and Lindfield Preparatory School.  I am working with both teachers and students across the two preparatory schools to integrate technology into teaching and learning programs in a meaningful and effective manner.

Our boys are engaged with technology both in and out of school. As educators, we need to ensure that technology is being used to enhance the learning experience. Through researched based pedagogy, students will engage in accessing, manipulating, creating and using technology to display knowledge and understanding of concepts taught in lessons. I am extremely excited to be able to collaborate with the teachers and students from Kindergarten to Year 6 this year.

This year at Wyvern we are starting a new era of classroom iPad management. Teachers from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be using the Apple Classrooms application. This application allows the teachers to view, manage and restrict iPad usage in live time. The new application ensures that the iPads are being used in a meaningful way and students are not becoming distracted and off task. This allows greater control for teachers and maximises learning time. At Wyvern we are very eager to ensure that the class iPads are being used effectively at all times and the Apple Classroom Application allows teachers to do this. I aim to showcase this application prior to the initial learning showcases early.

I look forward to working with the Newington community in my new role. If you have any questions or would like to reach out to me you are able to contact me on tcross@newington.nsw.edu.au

A Message from Mr Holden

Despite the hot weather, the boys have certainly hit the ground running in their first few days of the school year and it has been very pleasing to feel a great buzz of excited learning in the Wyvern classrooms this week. Those boys new to Wyvern seem to have settled in extremely well and should be congratulated for their concerted efforts to make new friends and to form positive connections with their teachers.

Clubs and Extra Curricular timetable

We are pleased to send out the attached Clubs and Extra Curricular timetable outlining a number of optional learning activities that are available to Wyvern students in Term 1.

We are fortunate that so many of our staff offer clubs to our students in their own time. All information about each club, including how to sign up, can be accessed via the links in this document which will take you to the relevant page on Spaces. The majority of clubs will start in week three with the exception of music ensembles, chess and the externally run clubs (Martial Arts and Greek School).

Can I please request that at the published finish time of each club students are collected promptly by parents? Should parents be running late for any reason, students will be able to be collected from After School Care (Osh Club). Please use the link for further details about OSH club hours and feesOshclub Fee and Information Sheet

Before School Supervision

A reminder that supervision of students starts from 8:00am every day. I request for boys not to arrive at school before this time. The only exceptions to this are for those boys who attend a school run activity or whose school bus arrives earlier than 8:00am. For their safety, we must ensure all boys are supervised at all times, as such, any boys who do arrive before 8.00am will be required to attend OSH club’s before school care service.

Faith Matters

Growing in Four Ways

I’ve just this minute come back to my desk after conducting 3-6 and K-2 chapels for the first time in 2017. It’s amazing to see how your sons have grown over the summer break!

Growing is something even Jesus did. It says in Luke’s biography of Jesus that “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and men.” He grew in four areas: (1) He grew “in wisdom” – intellectual development. (2) He grew “in stature” – physical development. (3) He grew “in favour with God” – Spiritual development. (4) He grew “in favour with men” – social and emotional development. Spiritual growth should not be compartmentalised, but integrated into every other aspect of life.

At Newington we want to encourage your boys to develop in each of these areas. In other words, we want to provide a holistic education. This has been the case since the inception of the College and has its roots in our school motto IN FIDE SCIENTIAM … to faith add knowledge.

We look forward this year in joining you watching as your sons grow in four ways.
