A Message from Mr Holden

Last week I attended the Commissioning Service for our new Headmaster of Newington, Mr Michael Parker. Senior staff and our School Captain, Daniel Carter played an important part in the service. The appointment of a new Headmaster is a significant time for any school and I encourage you to read Mr Parker’s excellent first official speech he gave at his Commissioning Service which can be found here. Over the last few weeks Mr Parker has also been heavily involved at Wyvern attending P&F events, school assemblies and meeting parents, staff and most importantly the boys.  Thank you to all parents who attended the P&F meeting yesterday evening to ‘Meet the New Headmaster’.

In Week 6 there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s teachers (both class teachers and specialist teachers), primarily with the aim to discuss his progress so far and also to set learning targets for the year. Semester 1 progress reports will follow at the end of Term 2. In Term 3 there will be a second formal opportunity for you to meet with your son’s teachers to review progress. Finally, a comprehensive end of year report will be issued at the conclusion of Term 4. An email invitation will be sent tomorrow for you to book your first meeting time for either Tuesday 5 March, 3:30pm – 6:30pm or Thursday 7 March, 3:30pm – 6:30pm.

Faith Matters

Brad Thorn – A servant leader

42 But Jesus called the disciples together and said:

You know that those foreigners who call themselves kings like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over the people they rule. 43 But don’t act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. 44 And if you want to be first, you must be everyone’s slave. 45 The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue any people.

Matthew 10:42-45

Many of you will know that I love all sorts of sports, so to begin Faith Matters this year, I though we’d look at some stories from the world of sports and relate them to matters of faith!

Brad Thorn is a personal hero of mine. He has had a legendary career in both Rugby Union and Rugby League. His achievements include a Rugby World Cup, Super Rugby Championship and three NRL championship titles. He played 59 tests for the World-dominating All Blacks, and now coaches the Queensland Reds in the super rugby competition.

Mr Holden shared a snippet of his story at our Year 6 Leaders’ Induction service this week, and it gives an insight as to why he is such a hero of mine. Thorn, following his World Cup victory with the All Blacks in 2011, went on in 2012 to play for Leicester in in the UK. Already a world-renowned legend of the game, he had nothing to prove, no more accolades to add to his name. But following one of Leicester’s home games, when the team were out celebrating, Thorn was nowhere to be found. Later, they discovered that he had stayed behind to sweep and clean out the sheds after everyone had left. This example of servant leadership is a great reminder of our call to be humble, and selfless. Brad Thorn is a Christian, and I’m sure Jesus’s words written above echoed in his head when he busily cleaned the sheds… “if you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others.”

In my opinion, Thorn showed his true greatness that day, and in all the ways he served his teammates.

Wyvern’s Years 3-6 Inter-House Swimming Carnival

Wvyern’s Years 3-6 students attended the Inter-House Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 13th February at Ryde Aquatic Centre. Below are photos take on the day. As you can see, much fun was had with our House Captains and Vice House Captains inspiring ‘Wyvern Spirit’ amongst their team mates.

Year 5 Camp Out

All of Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed (and survived) the first milestone of the year – the Year 5 Camp Out.

After carrying their supplies for the night from Wyvern, the boys relished the opportunity to have a splash in the pool and play some games. Later in the day, in collaboration with students from the Newington Challenge Program, boys were involved in team building exercises. These activities included ‘Capturing the Flag’ and ‘The Human Knot’.

The boys soon learned that tent building is hungry work and tucked in to a BBQ dinner, demolishing almost 200 sausages between them. Thank you to Mrs Churchin and Mr Jones for cooking.

The fun did not end there. The boys watched ‘Paddington’ in Old Boys’ Lecture Theatre, participated in sports and games and ended the experience with an amazing dance activity – thank you Mr MacRae!

The boys’ ‘Newington Values’ and ‘Wyvern Spirit’ were on show for the two days. We witnessed kindness, friendship and responsibility in abundance. Well done, boys!

We extend a warm thank you to all teachers who made this two day camp a success, and the Newington Challenge boys and Senior School staff for their expertise and time. A special mention to those who braved the outdoors and stayed the night – Mr MacRae, Mrs Kirk, Mr Suillivan, Ms Vuong and Miss Leontios. It has been heralded a Year 5 highlight already!
