A Message from Mr Holden

The term has started very smoothly with students already fully involved in a wide range of activities.

I was delighted with the conduct of our students in Years 3-6 who attended the College’s Anzac Ceremony last Friday. It was a most impressive occasion to remember the sacrifice our service men and women, past and present, have made to secure our freedom. It was especially poignant to remember old Newingtonians who made the ultimate sacrifice in past wars. I am sure that the significance of the occasion was not lost on our Wyvern students.

This week our boys have enjoyed a wonderful Literature Festival. They have shared in presentations and workshops from some of Australia’s leading children’s authors. A particular highlight was today’s superb Book Character Parade; it was terrific to see the school community embracing this event with such enthusiasm. My thanks to Mrs Barnes for organising an excellent festival this year.

On 18 May at 6.00pm, we are looking forward to the Music Showcase for all students in Years 3-6. Students have been working exceptionally hard in preparation for the concert. I remind parents that this is a compulsory activity for all students in Years 3-6.

With the winter sport season well under way, a reminder to parents that there is an IPSHA Code of Conduct Guide on SPACES for spectators. It is important that adults set an appropriate and supportive tone for our sporting programs.  Adults must lead by example, and as with all other areas of the school, we must set a tone where boys can enjoy themselves and perform without undue pressure. We should fully support all volunteer officials and regard sportsmanship as a high virtue. The Directors of each sport are happy to respond to any questions about their development programs in the Prep School. For Rugby contact Ben Manion; bmanion@newington.nsw.edu.au. For Football contact Brian McCarthy; bmccarthy@newington.nsw.edu.au

Finally, I will be taking a short period of study leave from 4 May to 8 May. Ms Sandra Gray will be Acting Head in my absence.

Artists of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

Term 1 Week 10
Congratulations to Seth Bogardus in 1P and George Pahis in 1Y for their fantastic cool/warm landscapes. Both artists used line and colour effectively to show meaning and movement. Great work!

Term 2 Week 1
Congratulations this week to Deyan Nikolic in 1P for his fabulously cool cow! Inspired by the work of Dutch artist Peter Diem and linking to the story of ‘The Cow that Tripped Over the Moon’. Deyan created a creative and colourful cow in mixed media to help celebrate the Literature Festival this week. Fantastic work, Deyan.

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 5 have finished their artworks based on ‘Pop Art and the Photo Bomb’! The boys were taken through the process of drawing a face accurately. Boys in Year 5 observed the Newington uniform, shirt and tie to create their ‘Newington Boy Portrait’. They were then let loose using their imagination to create their ‘alter ego’ portrait in order to ‘photo bomb’ the previous portrait.

The boys had a lot of fun with this art work. They also went to the AGNSW last term to see various artworks based around animals in Art.

Congratulations to Killian Douglas, Joshua Ibrahim and Roman Lewis for their interesting and unique art works.

Year 4 also completed their ‘Art Cars at Luna Park’. This art work was made up of a number of works using different techniques and ideas. Students participated in an ‘Art Car’ incursion to observe a number of different sports cars.

Congratulations to Michael Korompay and Benj Cooper for their fabulous work on cars and Luna Park.

#DeviceFreeDinner

Welcome back to Term 2.

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable time during the break and enjoyed the incredible weather we experienced. In eLearning we are excited about Term 2 and what it brings for the boys and teachers at Wyvern.

During the holidays, I spent a lot of quality time with my wife and our little baby George. During the two weeks we went to a lot of cafes and enjoyed a baby not yet on the move. We are well aware that this will change very soon so we tried to maximise this experience as much as possible. While out and about we noticed the amount of families that were at cafes or restaurants. On one occasion a family was sitting at a beautiful park cafe and were all completely engrossed in technology. There was not a single conversation had between anyone apart from the polite thank you to the wait staff. This got me thinking about families and how we are often distracted by our devices. How can we ensure that when spending time with our children we are present and engaged in conversation with them and not our phones?

#DeviceFreeDinner is a concept that has been around for a few years now and it is one that promotes families dropping their devices and engaging with each other over dinner. The website www.commonsensemedia.org has a large collection of resources to help aid a device free dinner. It offers conversation starters, video prompts and also resources to aid a healthy media diet.

The resources offer insights into the benefits of family conversation at meal times. The research states that;

  • Family mealtime can contribute to greater academic success.
  • Family mealtime is linked to fewer behaviour problems.
  • Families who share mealtimes at least three times a week are more likely to eat healthy.

At home this term I am aiming to put some of these into play and have a device free dinner every night. If you have any further questions about this, please do not hesitate in contacting me or popping in to see me at school.

Faith Matters

Winning the Biggest Battle

Richard Halverson writes ‘Do you want to be a winner? Compete against yourself, not somebody else. Outrunning your rival doesn’t mean you ran your best race. You can win over another and still not fulfill your potential. To be your best you must compete with yourself. It’s life’s biggest contest. A loser is a winner – however many his losses – if he conquers himself. And a winner is a loser – however many his victories – if he loses in the battle with himself. Alexander the Great conquered the world, yet cursed his own lack of self-control. Victory over others may in fact be the very thing that contributes to the winner’s failure to conquer self. Winning makes him arrogant, independent, thoughtless – and sometimes cruel. To put it another way, it isn’t what happens to you that makes the difference, but how you handle it. The one who stops maturing spiritually, is still far from being what God has planned for him.’

If you must compare yourself with another, compare yourself with Christ. “Christ … is your example. Follow in His steps: He never sinned, never told a lie, never answered back when insulted; when He suffered He did not threaten to get even; He left His case in the hands of God who always judges fairly” (1 Peter). Go ahead, measure yourself by that standard! And when you see how far short you fall, ask God to mould and fashion your life into the full potential, the divine original He intended. Do that, and you win the biggest battle of all!

Toy Drive Supporting The Sydney Children’s Hospital Play Therapy Department

Prior to the Easter holidays, Year 2 parents and boys started a toy drive to support the Sydney Children’s Hospital Play Therapy Department. We would like to thank Year 2 parents and boys for their generosity and support. Not only was the quantity of donations beyond expectations, but the quality was superb. It was obvious that you all took this donation drive to heart and all put some thought into what you were donating. Every gift was relevant, practical and appreciated.

We collected so many amazing and thoughtful gifts. The “wish list” from the Play Therapy staff was not only met, but exceeded. We received donations of three plastic mobiles, numerous arts and craft kits, new play doh and so many interactive toys for babies. We also raised over $500 in various vouchers. We learnt that the Department try to give a birthday gift to any child who is spending their birthday in hospital. They told us that our donations were of such great quality that they will enable the Department to continue that practice for a while longer.

There was also a wonderful assortment of pre-loved toys. We were told that these toys were fantastic and would immediately be distributed and rotated between the playrooms on each ward.

All in all, it was such a successful donation drive and we want to thank Year 2 boys, and in particular the class parents, for all their support.
