A Message from Mr Holden

Dear Parents,

I hope you had the chance to take a bit of a break during the recent holiday period and that boys are ready for our busy Semester 2 at Wyvern.

Building Works Update

There are 4 elements to the Wyvern building program all to be completed before the end of the academic year. They are:

  1. 60 place Early Leaning Centre for 3 and 4 Year olds,
  2. New Year 6 Centre,
  3. Science / STEM room,
  4. Major hall upgrade including music facilities.

I met with the builders over the holiday period who informed me that to be certain of finishing the projects by the end of the year they need to start work on elements 3 and 4 straight away. This is somewhat earlier than expected, however to make up time on the project and to guarantee that the builders finish by end of 2017 we have needed to bring forward certain elements of the works. In my view, much better to have some pain now rather than at the start of 2018.

Hence there will be some disruption to certain areas of the school as follows from Term 3 onwards:

  • Work has started in the hall and as a result the hall size has been reduced. We anticipate that most before school and after school music groups will still go ahead as normal in Term 3, but it is likely that we relocate these activities to the secondary campus from Term 4. The music department will send further information in due course. As we can no longer fit large numbers of boys in the hall we be holding Year 3-6 Chapel in the secondary campus’ Chapel every second week on Tuesdays. We will hold Year Group assemblies on a regular basis for Years 3-6 and will hold our major assemblies (Poetry Performance, Sports Awards, etc.) at the secondary campus. K-2 Chapel and assembly will go ahead as normal.

  • As building work will commence in the four Year 6 classrooms for the new STEM room, music group rooms and boarding facility upgrade, these classrooms will be relocated to the secondary campus from the middle of this term. The plan is for Year 6 classes to return to Wyvern for some specialist lessons.

Whilst I acknowledge the disruption to some areas of the school, we are working very hard to ensure that our normal lessons and activities go ahead as planned.  I will update you throughout the term of any further developments and on the progress of the project.

ABC Splash: Where Learning Can Move Seamlessly from School to Home and Back Again

Welcome back to school. I hope that everyone is feeling relaxed after a great three week break and relieved to be back at school and into the routine that comes with that.

Sometimes at home, interesting questions are raised by our boys around the table or even in the car driving somewhere. As adults, we may not have the correct answer and it is ok to let them know that at that point you don’t know. It’s important to let our boys know that we don’t know the answers to everything. It opens up a learning experience for the whole family and can be a really powerful experience for our boys to see adults learning the exact same things as they are. This is where ABC Splash comes in. This resource can help with your investigations and open up a learning experience at home with the use of videos, educational game play, age appropriate websites and interactive quizzes to test the whole family.

http://splash.abc.net.au/home#!/home can be accessed on any device and houses the most amazing resources. These resources spread across all learning areas including STEAM. Already this term I have used this tool with a Year 2 class investigating money. With a quick search we were able to find an age appropriate collection of videos on the history of money in Australia and also the significance of the little 5 cent coin that actually costs around 6 cents to make.

If you are really wanting to have the answers on the go all the time, you can download the free ABC Splash application from the App store. The app contains 50 of the most popular videos from the website. It also houses interactive quizzes and games that assist the learning process. At this point in time, the App is only available on iPads, though it also has a secondary school application to assist the older students in your family.

Next time you are stuck for that correct answer to a tricky question, why not head to ABC Splash and engage in the learning as a family? Just remember to not get too carried away and check it out whilst driving!

As always, if you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact me or pop in to see me at school.

Artist of the Week

Years 3 – 6 Artist of the Week

Year 4 have been looking at the topic of ‘Colonisation’. In art we approached the topic from the perspective of a Pirate in his ship. The boys also studied contemporary artist Sally Smart, and her approach to her Pirate and ships using juxtaposition within her media. The boys completed a fibre unit using different types of materials to make the skeleton Pirate ship.

Congratulations to Fionn Dugan and Ted Goldsmith for some excellent work.

Faith Matters

Imagine that you were really serious about running in a major annual marathon. How likely is it that you’d go on an all-sugar diet before the big race? The fuel you put into something determines its performance. This is why it’s so ironic that in one of the most important areas of life, we disregard this basic piece of wisdom. That area involves your mind. What you feed everything else is nothing compared to what you feed your mind.

Here’s a truth that will transform you – think excellent thoughts! What enters your mind repeatedly occupies it, shapes it, controls it, and in the end expresses itself in what you do and who you become. That’s the law of exposure. And it’s as sure as the law of gravity. Your mind will absorb and reflect whatever it’s exposed to. The events you attend, the materials you read or don’t read, the music you listen to, the images you expose yourself to, the conversations you hold, the thoughts you entertain, are all shaping your mind, and eventually your character and your destiny.

The Bible says, “if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think on such things.”

Transport for NSW – School Travel Update

Information for parents, guardians and students

Our school has partnered with Transport for NSW to use the new online School Portal for endorsing school travel applications.

You are now able to manage all your school travel needs online including applying for school travel passes and tracking the status of your application.

The application process has also been simplified so that a new or updated application for school travel passes is only needed when a student is:

  • applying for a school travel pass for the first time
  • requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody)
  • changing school or campus
  • changing home address
  • receiving an expiry notification
  • repeating a school year
  • changing their name
  • requesting a new transport operator.

This means that students progressing to Year 3 and Year 7 only need to reapply if they are changing circumstances.

Students who are not residents and are temporarily in Australia can also provide their visa subclass number and exchange program (if prompted) whey applying online making the application and approval process much faster.

Parents, guardians and students can apply or update their details online at:

www.transportnsw.info/school-students

If you do not have access to the internet contact 131 500 for assistance.
