A Message from Mr Holden

Parent Teacher Meetings in 2018

In Week 7 there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s teachers, primarily with the aim to discuss his progress so far and also to set learning targets for the year. Semester 1 progress reports will follow at the end of Term 2. In Term 3 there will be a second formal opportunity for you to meet with your son’s teachers to review progress. Finally, a comprehensive end of year report will be issued at the conclusion of Term 4. An email invitation will be sent next week for you to book your first meeting time for either Tuesday 13 March, 3:30pm – 6:30pm or Thursday 15 March, 3:30pm – 6:30pm.

One of our key learning areas we are targeting across the whole school this year is to continue to improve the quality of our students’ writing. As such we are implementing the ‘Big Write’ approach which we feel is an excellent vehicle to equip our boys with the skills and knowledge to become even more confident writers. Big Write is also a natural progression from the ‘Friday Write’ program we have used for a number of years at Wyvern. The essential elements of are:

  • weekly Big Write sessions in all classes,
  • talk home learning which is available on SPACES each week as part of boys’ home learning routine because ‘if they can’t say it…they can’t write it’,
  • VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation) interactive walls within each classroom which the boys contribute to,
  • writing goals for boys, set for the following week based on feedback from weekly Big Writes.

There will be regular updates about Big Write on each grade’s SPACES page. Furthermore, at the next P & F general meeting on 22 March, Ms Aimee Parkinson, our Big Write facilitator, will give a presentation about this important initiative.

Access to Wyvern House for Parents & Visitors

Dear Parents,

All visitors to Wyvern House, apart from staff and students, are required to use the electronic sign-in system and collect a visitor’s badge at the front office window before moving on to the designated area you wish to visit.  The system will take your photograph and provide you with a label to wear whilst on the premises. When exiting the building you must sign out to ensure we have an accurate record of who is on the premises. This enables us to provide a much safer environment for staff, students and parents. In the event of a fire alarm or evacuation, it would provide a photograph of any visitors thought to be in the building. It also allows us to have a more secure facility ensuring that we are able to keep track of visitors.

Additionally it improves communication within the school as it makes the signing in process much more autonomous, sending notifications to staff members when their visitor has arrived.

Please note: For those parents who wish to come into the school building in the morning, the only access is through the front entrance of the school and not via the internal door in the car park which is reserved for student access only.

Your patience and consideration in following this procedure ensures the safety of the students, staff and parents.

Kind regards

Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artist of the Week

Brandon To

Year 1 has begun their Forces of Nature unit of work by exploring the use of warm colour and looking at the sun.  Brandon has used a variety of lines to show the movement of light and heat.  He has demonstrated pleasing craftsmanship in his application of mixed media to create an interesting sun composition. Well done Brandon.

3 – 6 Artist of the Week

Year 6

Over the last few weeks Year 6 have been making cartoon and graffiti book covers as a lead in to painting their ‘Wyvernbald’ portraits. The boys were able to draw various cartoons including ‘Manga’ eyes. This is a difficult Japanese cartoon technique. Well done to the boys who gave it a go!

Congratulations to Adam Cooper, Liam West, William Griffiths, Lucas Chen, Sacha De Rosnay and Harry Board for their spectacular book covers.

Faith Matters

Father Forgive Them

You may or may not be aware that last week was the beginning of the Lent season, a time of preparation for Easter, over the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday. Many people choose to give up something over this time, often as a personal way of daily remembering the sacrifice of Jesus at Easter. As a lead up to this special time, we’ll take look at some of the Seven Last Words of Christ, and their significance for us today.

“Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Jesus, even at the brink of death on the cross sought forgiveness for those that were putting him through incredible pain. Forgiveness is a difficult thing to give to those who we love, and yet Jesus’s great love extended even to his enemies. In forgiveness, relationships have the possibility of being restored.

In this, our very ‘me’-focused world, it is often easier to look at those who hurt or offend or even simply annoy us and build walls to protect ourselves from them. Or keep them from us. Perhaps the image of a ‘building a wall’ conjures up another image from our current political landscape. Perhaps that image is a symbol of our own default position when someone hurts us: to keep the ‘other’ out. I wonder if there are walls around each of us, which forgiveness would bust down… Is someone in mind this week who you may need to forgive?

How do we achieve that? Well…

We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God’s throne!

Uniform Shop

Dear Parents,

Its been a great start to the year and I hope all the boys are enjoying Summer sport.

It’s already time to think about Winter Uniforms which are worn in Terms 2 and 3.

For those boys new to the school, the Winter Uniform consists of:

  • A long sleeve grey shirt (the same sizing as summer shirts)
  • Winter shorts (which are a more tailored cut and we therefore offer a bigger range of sizes)
  • Grey Blazer (this matches the shorts)
  • Grey long socks (stays the same)
  • Black Jumper
  • Black Prep Cap (stays the same)

All Winter stock is now in-store and able to be purchased. Please either come in during our opening hours or send through an email with you order.

Winter second hand stock will be available from Week 6 in-store only

Winter sport stock is also in-store.

  • Rugby – Rugby jersey, rugby shorts and striped socks
  • Football – Football/Soccer jersey, soccer shorts and striped socks
  • AFL – jersey supplied by the school, and normal PE shorts

As it starts to cool down – please remember that the tracksuit needs to be worn as a set to and from school. We now stock from sizes 4 through to a 16 (which is an XS in mens). The tracksuit is also the same as the senior school – so the Year 6 boys can wear them straight through!

If you have any questions, please send me through an email and I’ll be happy to help.
