A Message from Mr Holden

Last Friday the P&F hosted a very special Mother’s Day breakfast which was enjoyed by both Wyvern mums and their sons. Such functions cannot go ahead without tremendous effort and hard work from parent volunteers. I thank the P&F executive team and especially Sara Flaksbard and Katia Pizzinelli (Tuckshop) for putting on a superb event.

With NAPLAN testing completed for this year I wish to congratulate the students and staff in Year 3 and Year 5 for their calm approach with the testing arrangements this week. We seek to strike a good balance between ensuring the boys are adequately prepared for the NAPLAN testing format whilst providing an environment which is calm and as stress free as possible. Results of the NAPLAN tests are due back late in Term 3. Whilst our NAPLAN results are normally very strong we will nonetheless carefully analyse the data to assist us to continually improve our teaching and learning strategies.

Joy Comes with the Morning

‘Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning’ (Psalm 30:5) God can make us comfortable in some of life’s most uncomfortable places. He can bring us through situations we think we won’t survive or feel like we’ll be stuck in forever. He can give us peace when we’re under pressure.

All of us will experience loss or failure in our lives. We don’t know what tomorrow holds, but we do know that God is with us in all our ‘tomorrows’. And just because we may not understand the path we’re on, it doesn’t mean he isn’t leading us. He promises: ‘I will lead the blind on unfamiliar roads. I will lead them on unfamiliar paths. I will turn darkness into light in front of them. I will make rough places smooth… I will never abandon them’ (Isaiah 42:16). The psalmist writes, ‘Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning’ (Psalm 30:5). However long the situation seems, the solution will come – and his joy comes with it.

Looking back, we can see how his grace has protected us, provided for us, calmed us, comforted us, and brought us through difficulties. Times and seasons change, but God doesn’t. He’s ‘the same yesterday, today, and forever’ (Hebrews 13:8).

So what now? Try to find time this week to watch a sunrise. Use it as a reminder that however long the dark times may seem, God will bring morning.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Here are some photos taken at the Mother’s Day Breakfast at Wyvern last Friday 11th May. Other photos are available on the P&F Space page.

National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday May 23rd over 500,000 Australian children all across the country, including the Wyvern boys from Kindy to Year 2, will participate in National Simultaneous Storytime. In libraries, classrooms, preschools and bookstores children will read the same book, Hickory Dickory Dash. In its 18th year, this initiative of the Australian Library and Information Association is part of its annually held Library and Information Week.

The aim of National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is to promote literacy amongst children and expose them to the magic and excitement of reading. It addresses key learning areas in the Australian Curriculum such as: interpreting, analysing and evaluating texts, and placing texts in context. It also provides a way for families and communities to get involved in children’s literacy by sharing in their reading experience and introducing age appropriate themes for discussion.

On Wednesday at 12 noon, the Kindy to Year 2 students will come together in Wyvern Library to participate in NSS and read the story, Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson. We will be joined by 12 Senior School boys who will help us celebrate our love of reading stories. After reading and discussing the story, the boys will return to their classrooms where the Senior School boys will assist boys to make Mice Corner Bookmarks and then read other stories where mice are the main character.

Further details about National Simultaneous Storytime can be found on the ALIA website https://www.alia.org.au/nss.

The boys always enjoy National Simultaneous Storytime and being part of this Australia wide event.

Tony Wilson is an author and broadcaster who has been writing books for children for more than a decade. It is a great honour for Tony that Hickory Dickory Dash has been chosen for National Simultaneous Storytime this year after having his book, The Cow Tripped Over the Moon, as the National Simultaneous selection last year.

STEM Week

In Week 5 – Monday 28 May to Friday 1 June our Wyvern boys will experience a STEM focussed week.

Monday
Year 1 will enjoy a Year 11 student led ‘Light and Sound’ Workshop.

Tuesday
Selected Years 3 – 6 boys will undertake the ICAS Science competition

Wednesday & Friday
Year 6 will stretch their abilities by implementing their knowledge about electricity when they design
circuits in our STEM lessons.

Thursday
Kindy will have some exciting ‘living’ visitors.

Friday
– Year 4 will experience the Senior School Super labs when they study all things Geological with Senior
   Science staff.
– Our budding engineers in Year 3 will work with an industry based design team.
– Year 2 will put all they have learnt about forces and transport into action by designing an exciting form
of transport. What that form of transport will be is a surprise.

Astronomy Workshops
Year 5 will be able to choose to attend astronomy workshops in small groups at night at the Senior School starting that week to view our brand new Newington telescope. The astronomy workshops are subject to change based on weather patterns but you will be notified about alternate times.

All aspects of this STEM week are an extension of the topics we are currently undertaking in all the year groups. It should be a fantastic STEM-filled week.
