A Message from Mr Holden

A warm welcome back to Term 3. I hope you and your sons enjoyed the recent winter break. The boys seem refreshed and have enjoyed a very good first week back at Wyvern. It has certainly been an active one with our superb Year 3 -6 athletics carnival on Wednesday and the wonderful Wyverbald Exhibition of Year 6’s portraits in the hall.

I welcome Mr Tom Thoroughgood and Mrs Julie Burke to the staff team. Mr Thoroughgood takes over as Class 4T teacher and Mrs Burke will lead our Learning Enhancement team for the remainder of this year.

I also draw your attention to a change in our Wyvern Deputy’s roles. Ms Sandra Gray has been appointed as Head of Early Years and will have oversight of Newington’s Early Learning Centre. Ms Gray also remains Deputy of Wyvern with responsibility for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. Mr Richard Baker now has Year 3 as part of his portfolio with his new title being Wyvern Deputy Years 3-6.

On Monday, we are looking forward to the Wyvern Choir’s participation in the College’s Founder’s Concert. This is the most significant performance opportunity for the College’s top Senior School music ensembles, so the concert will be a special occasion. This year the concert will be held at Angel Place.

Save the Date for Back to Newington Day

Dear Newington College families,

Saturday, 11 August is Back to Newington Day – one of the biggest days on the Newington College calendar. Part fair, part marketplace, part entertainment hub, Back to Newington Day is packed with food stalls, music, flowers, fresh produce, fun for the kids … and some of the most competitive home sporting fixtures of the year. The day is held at our Stanmore Road campus, and attracts thousands of boys, families, staff, Old Boys and community members.

The P&F Communities of Stanmore, Wyvern and Lindfield would love you to be involved, firstly because Back to Newington Day is loads of fun, and secondly because all the money we raise goes back to the support groups who ensure Newington College boys get the best experience possible from their co-curricular activities every year.

How can you help? To start, mark the day in your diary, and invite friends and family to come along. As well, NEW Women, a support group of the P&F, will have Centenary Hall buzzing with the Marketplace, the Black & White Café, stalls selling homemade cakes, pre-loved books and vintage clothes, and a silent auction.  To support their efforts, you can:

  • Get ready to cook up a storm and donate your baked goods to the famous Back to Newington Day cake stall. Whole cakes are always in high demand. Muffins, tarts, brownies, biscuits, protein balls and savoury goodies, like vegetable frittatas and slices, sell in a heartbeat. Nut, gluten and egg-free options are always popular. If you’re not sure what to make, don’t worry: cake boxes will be handed out to boys in the week before to Back to Newington Day, or can be collected from reception or Concordia.

Baked goods can be dropped at Centenary Hall from 8am Friday 10 August or dropped in on the day.

  • Raid the cupboards and donate your pre-loved books to the book sale. We are specifically looking for adult, young adult and children’s books – both fiction and non-fiction – less than five years old and in good condition. The classics sell well.

Book donations should be dropped to the Property Department at Concordia by Thursday 9 August.

  • Been a while since you went through your wardrobe? We’re after gently-worn, good quality, adult and children’s clothing, handbags, jewellery and shoes for our vintage clothing stall.

All clothing donations should be dropped to the Property Department at Concordia by Thursday 9 August.

Volunteer on the day. An hour or two helping out at one of the many food stalls, the activities in Centenary Hall, the Black & White merchandise stall or with general support will be invaluable assistance and a great way to meet other Newington families.  In the first week of Term 3, the volunteer sheet will go up on Spaces so you can nominate your activity and time. Any questions about volunteering can be directed to Marnie Reid, P&F Communications at askbtn@gmail.com or on 0413 005 728.

We look forward to enjoying Back to Newington Day with you.

Artist of the Week

K-2 Artist of the Week

Christopher Tan – KW
Ren Clarke – 1Y
Lennox Kozak – 2H

Shakespeare Week in the Art Room.  Kindergarten created portraits of Duke Orsino or Lady Olivia from Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’. Christopher used water colour and oil pastel on his decorative portrait of Lady Olivia.  Year 1 carefully observed the detail in a Shakespearean style house and other Tudor Style homes in Stratford-On-Avon.  Ren carefully drew lines, windows and doors onto his house.  Year 2 created the storm scene from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’.  Lennox enjoyed pushing and pulling the ship to make the scene come to life.

Faith Matters

Being a Peacemaker

‘For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder.’ James 3:16

Paul wrote: ‘Live in harmony by showing love for each other. Be united in what you think, as if you were only one person. Don’t be jealous or proud but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves.’ Negative conflict causes problems. When we think too much of ourselves, our relationships become full of comparing and competing.

When conflicts happen, we need to respond to it with love, humility and selflessness. We should aim to live in harmony. When God prompts us to ‘turn the other cheek’ or be the first to apologise or put someone else’s needs above our own, he gives the grace and wisdom to do it:

‘The wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others… those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness’ (James 3:17-18).

Conflict that’s rooted in selfishness and jealousy needs to be avoided. Instead, we should try to be peacemakers.

Reading Challenges Are Due Friday 10 August

Dear Wyvern Parents,

Wyvern boys’ first Reading Challenges are due Friday August 10th. Many boys are working on additional challenges which may be submitted when they are finished.

How can you assist your son?

  • Reading Challenges logs for Years 3 – 6 are pasted in the back of your son’s diary.
  • Please check to see if they have completed their challenge and handed it in. Awesome!
  • If your son is still working on his challenge, please check his progress. How many more books does he need to read to finish the 2018 Reading Challenge?
  • Please ensure that all books your son has read are recorded on his reading log. Often boys read books from home and forget to add these to the their reading log.
  • If your son still has a few books to read, please encourage him to visit the Library before school, at recess, at lunch or after school to borrow the necessary reading materials. Please don’t just wait for Library lesson day to roll around.
  • If it looks as if your son will need additional time to complete his challenge, I am happy to give an extension as I feel it is important for the boys to feel a sense of accomplishment. However, if your son is completing a Premier’s Reading Challenge, the extension can only be given until August 27th as the Premier’s website closes shortly thereafter.

If you have any questions or I can assist in any way to ensure your son completes his Reading Challenge, please let me know.

With thanks,

Mrs Barnes
Librarian
