A Message from Mr Holden

This week parents with boys in Year 3 and Year 5 received their son’s 2018 NAPLAN results. This year the boys’ performance in the key areas tested (reading, spelling, writing, grammar and punctuation and numeracy) was very strong with our school average being significantly above the national average as well as for that of similar independent schools. In addition, we have seen pleasing growth in a number of the areas tested when compared to our good results from last year. I congratulate students and staff for their measured and calm approach to NAPLAN earlier this year.

A number of budding Wyvern scientists recently entered the NSW Young Scientist Competition. The boys involved were Harry Vohra, Benny Hunt, Angus Thompson, Patrick Jones, Rushabh Gandhi, Anthony Gregoire and Joshua Ibrahim and all spent considerable time devising, planning, making and presenting their individual projects. Many congratulations to all those who took part and especially Anthony Gregoire (Year 5) and Harry Vohra (Year 3) who won first place awards for their age groups with  Anthony’s aqua elevator and Harry’s self-driving robot taking top honours in the ‘Working Technology’ category. Their projects were two of the top 30 technology projects overall in NSW. They will be formally presented with their awards at the University of Wollongong in October. The young scientists have also been invited to take part in the national BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards (BHPBFSEA). We look forward to hearing about the results for ‘Working Scientifically’ which are due out next week. Results to follow next term.

As this is the last newsletter of the term, I would like to thank boys, teachers and parents for a very productive term. A reminder that Term 4 starts on Monday 15 October.

Barnardos Christmas Appeal – Gifts for Teenagers

Dear Wyvern Parents,

We will once again be supporting Barnardos Gifts for Kids for our Wyvern Christmas Appeal and this year Barnardos has made a special request from us to support ‘Teenagers’.

Barnardos are now caring for more teenagers than ever before, and Christmas is a particularly difficult time for them. Christmas should be one of the happiest days of the year, a day surrounded by family, filled with love and the excitement of a gift. Unfortunately, tens of thousands of Australian teenagers live in disadvantaged households, and Christmas can be a day filled with disappointment and confusion when they wake to find no gifts or special food on the table.

So this year we will be supporting ‘Teenagers Only’ so that they too can feel the love we have for giving to those less fortunate.

Each year we are constantly amazed with your generosity to support families less fortunate and once again we are seeking your support, but for teenagers only. In order to make a difference we are asking that you donate Gift Cards & Vouchers ONLY.

As of next Tuesday, 11th September we will place a Christmas Box in the Office Foyer with a slot in the lid for you to place your donation. All donations need to be made by the end of October. This will enable Barnardos to ensure timely distribution of gift cards and vouchers for Christmas.

We thank you in advance for your wonderful support of this incredible cause and know that your generosity will definitely make a difference to these young people this Christmas.

Faith Matters

For Faith Matters this term, we will look at some folk stories and explore how they link to matters of faith and our lives today.

The Grasshopper and the Toad

An African Folktale

Grasshopper and Toad appeared to be good friends. People always saw them together. Yet they had never dined at each other’s houses. One day Toad said to Grasshopper, “Dear friend, tomorrow come and dine at my house. My wife and I will prepare a special meal. We will eat it together.”

The next day Grasshopper arrived at Toad’s house. Before sitting down to eat, Toad washed his forelegs, and invited Grasshopper to do the same. Grasshopper did so, and it made a loud noise.

“Friend Grasshopper, can’t you leave your chirping behind. I cannot eat with such a noise,” said Toad. Grasshopper tried to eat without rubbing his forelegs together, but it was impossible. Each time he gave a chirp, Toad complained and asked him to be quiet. Grasshopper was angry and could not eat. Finally, he said to Toad: “I invite you to my house for dinner, tomorrow.”

The next day, Toad arrived at Grasshopper’s home. As soon as the meal was ready, Grasshopper washed his forelegs, and invited Toad to do the same. Toad did so, and then hopped toward the food. “You had better go back and wash again,” said Grasshopper. “All that hopping in the dirt has made your forelegs dirty again.” Toad hopped back to the water jar, washed again, then hopped back to the table, and was ready to reach out for some food from one of the platters when Grasshopper stopped him: “Please don’t put your dirty paws into the food. Go and wash them again.”

Toad was furious. “You just don’t want me to eat with you!” he cried. “You know very well that I must use my paws and forelegs in hopping about. I cannot help it if they get a bit dirty between the water jar and the table.”

Grasshopper responded, “You are the one who started it yesterday. You know I cannot rub my forelegs together without making a noise.”

From then on, they were no longer friends.

In the Bible, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12 about the people of God being each a different part of the one body. Each of us is different – we carry different strengths and different faults, but together we make up the body of Christ. In friendship, the challenge is to see the strength of the other, and not focus on the faults.

1 Corinthians 12:27

27 Together you are the body of Christ. Each one of you is part of his body.

Year 6 Auesco Excursion

On Monday 10th of October, as part of the Eco Warriors inquiry learning unit, Year 6 travelled across Sydney to continue their study on plant and animal adaptations. Each class went to different places, with 6H – Wetlands Excursion (Bonna Point Reserve, Kurnell); 6K – Bushland Excursion (Camp Kedron, Ingleside); 6J – Rock Platform Excursion (Warringah Surf Rescue, Anzac Ave, Collaroy); 6B – Sand Dunes Excursion (Marine Esplanade, North Cronulla). Students had a wonderful time and learnt many new things about native habitats in each of these areas. Thank you to the excursion coordinators, AUSECO, and Mr King for organising such a wonderful learning experience.
