A Message from Mr Holden

Welcome back to what will be a very full and active Term 4. Please refer to the latest Term 4 Parent Calendar (available via Wyvern Spaces) for all details.

2019 CLASS ALLOCATION
The process for allocating students to their 2019 classes is well underway. It is my intention to inform you of your son’s new 2019 class before the end of this term. Boys will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher on “One-Up Morning” on 29 November. Please note that the deadline for parental input into the process has now passed and unfortunately, as such, I cannot consider any further requests.

NO SPORT ON MONDAY
Due to the swimming program in Term 4 there will only be sports training for Year 3 –Year 6 on Wednesday afternoons.  Boys in Year 3-6 may wear their PE uniform to school on this day as well as on the day of their swimming lesson.

YEAR 5 CAMP
This week we wished Year 5 boys and teachers a safe and enjoyable trip as they headed off to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens. I am sure they are enjoying this outdoor education experience which links well with many of our school’s Building Learning Power attributes.

NSW YOUNG SCIENTIST
Congratulations to Harry Alscher who has recently been selected as a prize winner in the 2018 STANSW Young Scientist Awards in the ‘Working Scientifically’ Category. He will join Harry Vohra, Ruben Merani, Anthony Gregoire and Will Verden (also Young Scientist prize winners, previously mentioned in the Wyvern) at a Presentation Ceremony on 31 October.

Artist of the Week

K-2 Artists of the Week

Term 4 – Week 1

Year 2 have continued their Unit of Work on Still Life by exploring the artwork of Henri Matisse – Still Life with Pineapples and Lemons.  The boys used this artwork as inspiration as well as fresh pineapples to create detailed observational drawings.  Zane, Leo and Alessandro experimented with pearlescent watercolour to add colour to their work and enjoyed exploring this new medium.  Well done, boys!

Yelena Rubie
K-2 Visual Arts Teacher

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 3 completed their ‘Dragon’ artwork in conjunction with their reading of ‘Rowan of Rin’. The boys experimented with poster paint, acrylic paint and pencil to create their own version of a dragon.

Congratulations to Zain Hammoud and Maksim Stevanovski for their amazing dragons.

Year 5 also completed their weaving artworks based on the idea of the ‘Gold seam’. The boys used a variety of materials as part of an abstract fibre unit.

Congratulations to  Kevin Feeney, Nathan Chong and Sebastian Wong for their inspiring pieces.

Year 6 also completed digital work based on the artwork of De Kathryn Barton. These humanoid animal pieces were a result of using an app called ‘Sketchbook edu’. The boys were taught layering, colour and composition within their artworks.

Congratulations to Finlay FitzSimons and James Rodgers for their interesting and thought provoking artworks.

Barnardos Christmas Appeal – Help Build the Tree

Great news! The Wyvern Christmas Tree is growing!

Help finish building the tree by donating to the Barnardos Christmas Appeal.

A coloured panel will be added to the tree for every 40 vouchers donated.

We will once again be supporting Barnardos Gifts for Kids for our Wyvern Christmas Appeal and this year Barnardos has made a special request to support ‘Teenagers’.

Each year we are constantly amazed with your generosity to support families less fortunate and once again we are seeking your support, but for teenagers only. In order to make a difference we are asking that you donate Gift Cards & Vouchers ONLY.

All donations can be popped in the gold box located beside the tree in the reception area. Donations will be accepted until the end the end of October. This will enable Barnardos to ensure timely distribution of gift cards and vouchers for Christmas.

We thank you in advance for your wonderful support of this incredible cause and know that your generosity will definitely make a difference to these young people this Christmas.

Faith Matters

TRUSTING GOD IN THE STORM

”I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.’ Philippians 4:13

Sometimes God helps us grow our faith by allowing us to go through challenging situations. We need to have something to look forward to and believe God for, otherwise our faith stays in one place. Mark 6:45-51 says, ‘Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him.’ When a storm came up in the night, the disciples had to row through it for hours until Jesus walked across the water to meet them. As soon as he climbed into the boat, the storm died down.

Jesus didn’t prevent his disciples from facing the storm. Jesus also knew the right time to step in. He was teaching them to follow his instruction and trust him even when things were difficult. He teaches us the same things today through our challenges.

Nineteenth-century American preacher and abolitionist Phillips Brooks wrote, ‘Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your power, pray for power equal to your tasks.’ We don’t experience the extent of God’s resources until we do something that seems impossible. That’s when we discover that we really can do everything through Christ, who gives us strength.

So what now? Is there a situation you’re feeling intimidated by? Trust God to help you grow your faith and strength through the situation.

Wyvern Community Project – Wrap with Love

Dear Wyvern Community,

This year a number of staff, friends of staff, parents and grandparents have been knitting squares for the Wrap With Love organisation. Wrap with Love Inc is a not for profit organisation. There are millions of people in the world suffering extreme cold. In 1992 Wrap with Love began with the idea to help as many people as possible by providing warm Wraps to ward off hypothermia and in the past 23 years they have sent more than 400,000 Wraps to people in over 75 countries, including Australia, with the help of hardworking and generous volunteers.

To date the Wyvern Community has collected almost 200 knitted squares and stitched them into wraps. If you would like to be part of this ongoing initiative, please read the following details.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING SQUARES

Squares for Wraps are to measure 25cm x 25cm (10 inches x 10 inches).

Knitted Squares
To knit a 25cm x 25cm square use No.8 (4mm) needles with 8 ply yarn, cast on 50-55 stitches, and knit each row plain (ie garter stitch).

Note:
Test your tension to measure 10 inches.

Do Not Knit Stocking stitch
Do not knit one row plain, one row purl (ie stocking stitch) as your square will curl up.

No Knots
Start each ball of yarn at the beginning of a row and sew in ends. Do not cut ends off short as your square will unravel. When starting or finishing a square, sew in all ends.

Crochet squares
Crochet squares to measure 25cm x 25 cm as for knitted squares – any pattern will do. Some people crochet the whole Wrap in one piece.

Please drop off your knitted squares at the Wyvern Uniform Shop when they are completed, for assembly into wraps.

Alternatively, if knitting isn’t your forte but you would like to be involved, donations of 8 ply wool would be gratefully received. Please drop off donations at the Uniform Shop as well.

With thanks

Joanne Barnes & Sharon Lewandowski
