A Message from Mr Holden

PRIZE GIVING

This year’s Annual Wyvern Prize Giving for students in Years 3 – 6 will take place in Centenary Hall on Thursday 6 December at 9:00am. Students are asked to meet their class teachers at the Senior School outside the Music Centre (next to Centenary Hall) no later than 8:30am wearing summer uniform minus black cap. Following Prize Giving we invite parents and students to join Wyvern staff for morning tea under the space frame area near to the gym.

Whilst we take the opportunity to award a number of prizes for outstanding effort and achievement (categories listed below), the ceremony is primarily an opportunity for the Wyvern community to mark and celebrate a most positive year. As such, this event is a compulsory activity for all students in Years 3 – 6. Although the final school day for students in K – 2 is Wednesday 5 December, K – 2 families are most welcome to attend Prize Giving. K – 2 boys must attend in uniform. The end of the ceremony marks the official start of the summer break for students.

On Monday we commemorated Remembrance Day with a short service. The concept of Remembrance Day can be a difficult one for younger students to grasp as inevitably, over time, our connection to these immensely significant events starts to fade. But this is precisely the reason why pausing to reflect on the vital roles our service men and women have played in past conflicts is so important. I was extremely impressed with the respectful and dignified manner in which our boys honoured those who have sacrificed so much.

Kindergarten read the aboriginal dreamtime story of The Echidna and the Shade Tree during the Unit of Work on Hidden Stories.  They engaged their perseverance muscles to create their own mixed media Echidna Sculptures based on the book.  Adam, Flynn, Max and William enjoyed the tactile experience of working with clay and the step by step process involved.

Remembrance

John 15:13

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

This week we celebrated the centenary of the end of WW1 on Remembrance Day, the 11th of November 2018. We paused to honour those who fought for our freedom, to reflect on the price they paid, and to acknowledge the benefits we gained through their sacrifice.

Our daily World News provides plenty of reasons to appreciate the freedoms we enjoy today in Australia. News of refugees in crises, asylum seekers mistreated, civil war and religious oppression.

Oh, the freedoms we take for granted here in our country!

As we pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy, it reminds me also say thanks to Jesus Christ for the sacrifice he made for mankind.

Hebrews 10:19-20 says, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.”

Jesus’ sacrificial death paved the way for us to have access to God. Because of what he’s done, we can know with certainty that our sins are washed away. We can enjoy moment by moment fellowship with our heavenly father. We can bring our concerns and needs to him in confidence believing that he’ll care for us.

This week, let’s pause to honour those who fought for our freedom. And as we do, let’s remember the price that Jesus paid so that we might enjoy spiritual freedom, too.

Time to return the Library Books

Dear Boys and Parents,

It has been a very busy year with reading and borrowing books from Wyvern Library. As I write this, 19259 books have been borrowed from the library this year. Sadly, we have to place a deadline for the return of current books on loan, as Library Stocktake needs to take place in the coming weeks before school ends.

Week 5 is the last week for borrowing from Wyvern Library for all boys. All books need to be returned in Week 6 – by Friday November 23rd. Please check your bookcases, cupboards, tote trays, lockers, inside your car and under your bed, for any books belonging to Wyvern Library. The books will be marked with a Wyvern Library barcode on the back cover of the book. If you are unsure if you have any books still on loan, please come to the Library and check with Mrs Barnes or Mrs Mann.

Your assistance in returning your books promptly will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Mrs Barnes
