A Message from Mr Holden

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers this week have been with the Christchurch community following the horrific and unimaginable events of last Friday. We took the opportunity at morning assembly on Monday to pray for the Muslim families so deeply affected in Christchurch, as well as for our own Muslim families. We will keep a close eye on all of the Wyvern boys over the coming days and weeks. At Wyvern we are blessed to have a diverse community where we witness daily actions of tolerance, empathy and understanding.  At all times we must promote these values.

Congratulations to the Year 3 to Year 6 Wyvern students who tackled yesterday’s cross county event with great energy and tenacity. There were some wonderful individual performances (see the Wyvern Sports section for details) and I was especially pleased to see such great camaraderie and team spirit on display. Thank you to parents who attended to support your sons and this event. I also acknowledge the excellent organisation of Mr Joel Wilson, Wyvern Sportsmaster, and the assistance of the staff team.

A special mention to our Junior relay team who represented IPSHA at the CIS swimming carnival this week. The team finished third and have now qualified for the NSW PSSA championships to be held in April. All four boys swam personal bests, an outstanding achievement! Congratulations to Aleksander Barlin, Joel Miller, Alex Nicholias and Angus Baker Wood.

Faith Matters

Following the events in Christchurch on Friday, I feel it is right for us as a community to reflect and to pray for those affected, both directly, and those in our community who are left reeling by this horrific tragedy.

Our school is a diverse community, welcoming all faiths, and we have many Muslim families and boys who will undoubtedly be hurting from this awful occurrence in New Zealand, a nation so similar and close to our own.

With this in mind, let us remember the example of Jesus, known as the Prince of Peace, who preached kindness and love to all peoples, shown for us clearly in the story of the Good Samaritan. Here was a man who cared for his neighbour, even though they did not share the same beliefs, as if he were his brother. It is this attitude that we must adopt for all of our neighbours, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Jewish or otherwise. This is the love and peace that God calls us to.

Below is a prayer which you may like to pray in this difficult time:

Almighty Father,
you rule the earth and its people in love.
We pray for those torn apart through the ravages of terror in these New Zealand mosques today.
And we ask you to bring comfort and healing to the injured and grieving.
In a world of too much darkness,
give to all who exercise authority
determination to defend freedom and justice for all,
strength to protect and safeguard the innocent,
and vision to guide our world into pathways of peace.
In this time of uncertainty and fear,
help us all to love our neighbours
noting the example of Jesus Christ.
We look to him as the Prince of peace,
in whose name we pray. Amen.

Year 4 Visit The Royal Botanic Garden

As part of their curriculum, Year 4 visited The Royal Botanic Garden last Friday taking a walk through the Cadi Jam Ora, learning about the traditional and contemporary uses of native plants and how they were used by original custodians for food, medicine, shelter, tools and weapons.

Year 5 Art Excursion

The Year 5 boys were treated to an amazing Art excursion on Monday 18th March to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The boys were taken through exhibitions by Art educators featuring Janet Lawrence and also participated in a STEAM lab. The boys also toured ‘The Rocks’ with Ms Buining, drawing the Opera House and Cadmans Cottage and participated in a historical treasure hunt. The boys were able to make links between the sculptures about early settlement in ‘The Rocks’ area and artwork on historical selfies. The boys were also treated to a tour of the Ken Done Gallery (one of Ms Buining’s favourite artists) seeing his latest work.
