A Message from Mr Holden

As we approach the half-way point of the term it is pleasing to see boys fully involved in a range of activities and pursuits. The students in K-2 enjoyed a very successful K-2 athletics carnival this week. My thanks to parents who were able to attend as well as to Mr Martin and the Wyvern staff for organsing the carnival.

At the next P and F meeting on Wednesday 11 September at 6:30pm, Ms Belinda Martins (Wyvern Digital Learning teacher) and Ms Lindsay Bosch (Wyvern Stem teacher) will update parents about our approach to digital learning and science and technology, including the implementation of the new Science and Technology syllabus. There have been some significant changes in this area, so I encourage you to attend this workshop; please RSVP for this event at wyvern@newington.nsw.edu.au

The College’s Head of Corporate Services, Mr Peter Yates, has asked me to notify parents that the Fees in Advance policy has been amended and that the policy is available on the website. Click here

Artists of the Week

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 4

In Term 2, Year 4 studied ‘Exploration’. The boys created a Pirate Ship collage using different materials. They looked at artwork by Sally Smart who likes using juxtaposition in her work. The collage had lots of juxtaposing materials used on it.  After the boys had finished, they celebrated with a Pirate Party.

Congratulations to Harry Vohra, Nicholas Softsis and Kiril Kukeski-Xipolitas for their fantastic Sally Smart inspired work.

Year 3

In Term 2, Year 3 boys studied the work of John Coburn. They created beautiful abstractions of gardens within a bottle. They used different materials and recycled the paint bottles from the Art room.

Congratulations to Frank O’Halloran and Sam Cameron for their inspiring work.

Year 1 Vaucluse House Excursion

For their History unit, Year 1 students are learning about ‘Life Before Me’. To assist with their learning, the boys visited Vaucluse House – a wonderful old ‘living museum’ that has been preserved beautifully.

On this excursion, students learned about the past by way of hand-on experiences and stories. They learned of the hardships during that time period, what life may have been like as a similar aged child, what children wore and participated in some popular games/activities (What? No electronic devices back then?). They also tried their hand at being a kitchen servant – now they know how to sweep, churn butter and fold tea towels.

Vaucluse House is a beautiful property open to the public for tours. It has stunning grounds, which the students thoroughly enjoyed wandering through.

Year 4 Maritime Museum Excursion

Year 4 have been studying the Age of Discovery during History. The students experienced a guided tour of the vessel, HMB Endeavour, exploring both above and below decks, from bow to stern. They learnt about life on board for the crew, marines, officers and men by viewing different parts of the ship including Cook’s cabin. Inside the museum, the students heard the stories of adventurers who navigated the oceans. The students observed traditional and scientific navigation techniques.
