A Message from Mr Holden

PRIZE GIVING

This year’s Annual Wyvern Prize Giving for students in Years 3 – 6 will take place in Centenary Hall on Wednesday 4 December at 9:00am. Students are asked to meet their class teachers at the Senior School outside the Music Centre (next to Centenary Hall) no later than 8:30am wearing summer uniform minus black cap. Following Prize Giving we invite parents and students to join Wyvern staff for morning tea under the space frame area near to the gym.

Whilst we take the opportunity to award a number of prizes for outstanding effort and achievement (categories listed below), the ceremony is primarily an opportunity for the Wyvern community to mark and celebrate a most positive year. As such, this event is a compulsory activity for all students in Years 3 – 6. Although the final school day for students in K – 2 is Tuesday 3 December, K – 2 families are most welcome to attend Prize Giving. K – 2 boys must attend in uniform. The end of the ceremony marks the official start of the summer break for students.

On Monday we commemorated Remembrance Day with a short service. The concept of Remembrance Day can be a difficult one for younger students to grasp as inevitably, over time, our connection to these immensely significant events starts to fade. But this is precisely the reason why pausing to reflect on the vital roles our service men and women have played in past conflicts is so important. I was extremely impressed with the respectful and dignified manner in which our boys honoured those who have sacrificed so much.

Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

Jad Chami 1Y
Alexander Gregoire 1Y

Year 1 students have immersed themselves in different types of Portraiture.  Inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso, Jad and Alexander have created their own mixed media self-portrait.  They have drawn, painted and collaged in pencil, paint and paper to create them.  Year 1 used hand mirrors to look at their unique facial features and to check for correct proportion and details.  The boys enjoyed seeing their work hanging in the recent Wyvern Biennale.  Well done!

K-2 Visual Art Teacher

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 4

Year 4 painted carnivorous plants in preparation for their carnivorous plant sculpture. As part of their creative thinking assessment task, the boys were asked to come up with many varieties of plants with facial expressions. The boys also used their colour knowledge to use warm, cool and neutral colours on their work. Congratulations to Richard Wilson for his plant checkerboard artwork.

Year 5

The boys created ‘Changeling Monsters’, using ceramics and glazes. The boys were inspired by ceramic artist James de Rosso, focusing on his use of quirky characteristics within his work.

Congratulations to Fergus FitzSimons, Sam Gallant, Max Barry, Adam Younes, and Alexander Fulton for their beautiful ceramic pieces.

Year 6

Year 6 completed work using Australian mid century artist Albert Tucker as inspiration. Albert Tucker was an artist in WW1. He was charged with drawing the wounded soldiers in a hospital near Melbourne. His work ‘Parrots Attacking Faun’ is an example of his response to the war and the long lasting trauma for soldiers.

Congratulations to Finnbarr Hynes, Ryan Cordato and Zeke Kolenc for their original work in response to the work of Albert Tucker.

Barnardos Christmas Tree Appeal

Dear Parents and boys,

The Barnardos Christmas Tree is growing. So far we have had an incredible 84 vouchers donated to this worthy cause.  We still need 116 vouchers to complete the last 3 layers of the Christmas tree with only 2 weeks left remaining to do this.

Thanking you in advance for your wonderful support and generosity for teenagers again this year.

Compassion in Action

Dear Wyvern Community,

You are being called to action…. Compassion in Action!  Have you ever thought about seeing the world from a different lens… the perspective of a child with cancer? an animal that is dying out….? communities with no sporting opportunities?… people suffering severe heart conditions or those who go to bed at night with as little as a cardboard box?

On 29 November (Friday of Week 7) Year 6 will be hosting a ‘Compassion in Action Expo’ day as part as their final Religious Education unit. In Term 4, Year 6 have been exploring the multilayered concept of compassion and how it provides a vehicle for changing the lens in which we look at the world around us. The boys were called to ‘Compassion in Action’ where they take it a step further by genuinely wanting to understand and have a desire to alleviate the suffering of another. This will culminate in an expo day where the boys will inform other young Wyvern men and staff about their charity and will organise an activity that the K-5 boys will participate in.

Therefore, Year 6 are asking for a gold coin donation on Friday the 29 November, Week 7 in order to help support their charities in need. The boys in K-5 will then participate in the Year 6 expo stalls while learning about the different small, large, profit and non-for-profit charities that need our help. All the money raised will be split across the multiple charities the Year 6 boys are fundraising for. A list of charities the boys will be raising awareness for is listed below. Please also have a look at the attached digital posters which demonstrate some of the incredible charities that will be showcased at the Compassion in Action Expo. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks,so stay tuned!

Year 1 Sydney Observatory Excursion

Year 1 had a wonderful day when we visited Sydney Observatory. We learned about the way scientists measure the weather and used the same instruments to measure for ourselves. We measured the wind, rainfall, temperature and clouds. We also learned about the varying sun heights during our seasons as well what weather and climate is, and why we need to be aware of them.

Year 3 Camp at Narrabeen Sport & Rec

Last week, Year 3 ventured off to Narrabeen for a 2 day camp. The boys had been looking forward to it since Week 1 of Term 1 and the experience definitely didn’t disappoint! Over the course of the 2 days, the boys participated in archery, low ropes, flying fox, kayaking and night games. The buffet style food pleased most of the boys as they crept up to get seconds and third serves. The fridge filled with fruit was a hit as the boys could access it at any time. We were extremely impressed with the resilience, perseverance, kindness and courage the boys showed. Their independence shown as they packed and unpacked their belonging and cleaned up after each meal. The boys are already looking forward to Year 4 camp! We would like to thank Miss Vuong, Mrs Edwards, Mr Jensen, Mr Naylor and Mr Wilson for coming along – we very much appreciated their support.
