Wow! What a camp!
We flew high. Climbed through the mud. Swung amongst the top of trees. Climbed higher than ever before. Learnt how to survive in the bush and also had the best time away on camp.
All boys in Year 4 attended The Great Aussie Bush Camp last week. Led by Ms Prizmic, Ms Vuong and Mr Cross the boys experienced life outside of Wyvern. Some of the activities included climbing 15 metres up a tree and also experienced the giant swing where boys were dropped from 16 metres in a free fall that left many stomachs floating in the air. All activities saw boys flex their collaborative muscles and presevere through tough challenges. An anticipated activity during the time away was the now famous Lost World (Mud Run). After the hype from last year’s experience, boys were more than excited to get down and dirty. All students braved the cold muddy conditions and battled through various obstacles whilst being totally covered in mud.
During the nights boys were treated to two amazing activities. The first night saw boys running businesses and making well-earned Bush Dollars. The second night saw the largest game of spotlight occur. Students braved the cold, harsh conditions to save a few hostages only to be stopped by teachers hiding in the dark forest armed with a spotlight to catch boys’ sneaking through. Well-earned refreshments were had by the boys afterwards whilst sitting around a camp fire listening to one of the many famous camp fire stories that were told.
A big thank you needs to go out to all the teachers and boys that attended The Great Aussie Bush Camp. Ask any teacher or student and I’m sure you will hear nothing but praise. Year 3 boys are already preparing for this excellent bonding experience away.

2016 WYVERN SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL CELEBRATES THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF SHAKESPEARE
Wyvern House is delighted to announce the upcoming 2016 Wyvern Shakespeare Festival. A century ago, at the time of Shakespeare’s tercentenary, Newington boys raised money for a planned Shakespeare memorial that never eventuated: the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death coincided with the very first ANZAC Day commemorations. This year we join once again in the global celebrations for Shakespeare’s quatercentenary, in Week 9 (20-24 June) the students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be working with their classroom and specialist teachers along with – Bell Shakespeare’s ‘Artist in Residence’ program – to conduct in-depth studies of Shakespeare’s plays.
The creative powerhouse of the Bell Shakespeare Company has been inspiring new audiences for Shakespeare since 1990. A creative powerhouse committed to producing audacious and relevant plays for an Australian context, Bell Shakespeare has become one of Australia’s most influential cultural institutions.
This year, Wyvern is especially excited as members of the company will work intensively with our students, guiding them through the plot, characters, language, creative and critical thinking activities in some of Shakespeare’s best known plays. Years 5 & 6 are studying Macbeth, Years 3 & 4 are investigating A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Years 1 & 2 are looking at The Tempest while our Kindergarten classes will be introduced to Shakespeare through Twelfth Night.
Kindergarten – Twelfth Night
‘What country, friend, is this?’
Shipwrecked and abandoned on a foreign shore, our heroine Viola disguises herself as a boy and goes into service for the duke Orsino. Viola quickly develops feelings for the duke, but does not dare reveal her secret. Believing she is a boy, the duke sends the disguised Viola to woo the determinedly single Lady Olivia. In a comical turn of events, Olivia falls in love with Viola! As the plot twists and turns every character in this play is eventually forced to reveal their true nature.
Year 1 and Year 2 – The Tempest
‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on’
On an enchanted island, the sorcerer Prospero lives with the spirits he has enslaved and his young daughter Miranda. As the play opens, Prospero conjures a huge tempest, washing ashore his usurping brother and other courtiers from Prospero’s past as the Duke of Milan. As Prospero uses his magic to taunt his enemies, Miranda encounters and rapidly falls in love with the young Ferdinand. Nothing can be resolved until Prospero gives the spirits their freedom, forgives his brother and agrees to destroy his books of magic.
Year 3 and Year 4 – A Midsummer Night’s Dream
‘The course of true love never did run smooth’
On this strange midsummer night, the fairies make fools of mere mortals. Escaping an arranged marriage, four young people leave their court and enter the woods. There Oberon, the king of the fairies, orders his servant Puck to confuse them with a love potion. As the lovers run amok in the forest, a group of tradesmen rehearse a tragic play to unintentionally comic effect.
Year 5 and Year 6 – Macbeth
‘Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble’
The ‘Scottish play’. A victorious warrior chooses to heed the prophecies of a group of witches, betrays his king and descends into madness. In Shakespeare’s famously bloody meditation on the nature of reality, loyalty and predestination, nothing is as it seems.
Did you know?
Theatrical tradition has it that Shakespeare himself played the role of the king’s ghost in Hamlet. Be on the look out in Week 9, in case the ghost of Shakespeare appears in the halls of Wyvern.
If you have any interest in or experience with Shakespeare please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher with any suggestions or ideas to assist. The Wyvern Shakespeare festival is an opportunity to reflect on the impact that Shakespeare’s writing has had on the collective imagination, both within the English-speaking world and beyond, from the Globe theatre in Southwark to across the globe. Over four centuries the ways in which Shakespeare’s plays have been performed has changed constantly, as have the ways in which audiences and readers respond to the man who, as his contemporary Ben Jonson claimed, ‘was not for an age, but for all time’.

Some of the people around you, even successful ones, are dying on the vine for lack of encouragement. Solomon writes, “How delightful is a timely word.” Isn’t that true? It’s delightful to receive a timely word. The Message says, “The right word at the right time – beautiful!” Encouragement brings emotional healing, restores hope by putting the problem into perspective, and makes the day more bearable. Is there someone you know who needs encouragement? A divorcee trying to rebuild his or her life? A breadwinner who’s out of work, worried about their family? A widow who needs companionship? Someone in your own family? Everyone is struggling with something – so everyone needs encouragement.
William Barclay writes, “One of the highest of human duties is the duty of encouragement…it is easy to laugh at men’s ideals; it is easy to pour cold water on their enthusiasm; it is easy to discourage others. The world is full of such discouragers. But we have a duty to encourage one another. Many a time a word of praise or thanks or appreciation or cheer has kept a man on his feet. Blessed is the man who speaks such a word.” The apostle Paul writes: “Outside, trouble was on every hand…within us, our hearts were full of dread and fear. Then God who cheers those who are discouraged refreshed us by the arrival of Titus. Not only was his presence a joy, but also the news that he brought” (2 Corinthians 7:5-7 ). So, be a Titus – encourage someone today.

Deyan Nikolic KB and Leo Langman KS
In Visual Arts, Deyan and Leo have been exploring self-portraiture. They drew themselves firstly from memory and then fully engaged their noticing muscle to draw themselves from observation. They worked really hard to include detail and represent their facial features. Both boys demonstrated a wonderful sense of balance and excellent control of line whilst drawing. Fabulous work, boys!

NAPLAN
At Wyvern we place a strong emphasis on maintaining a balanced and engaging curriculum in both the lead up to, and during NAPLAN testing week. We challenge, encourage and support each student to achieve his personal best in the tests and we do all we can to ensure that the classroom climate is one of low anxiety. Judging from the positive feedback from students about their experience of NAPLAN testing, it does seem that our approach strikes the right balance. I congratulate Year 5 and Year 3 students and their teachers for their excellent effort shown during last week’s NAPLAN assessments. We expect the NAPLAN results will be ready for distribution to parents in August.
WYVERN MUSIC SHOWCASE
We are looking forward to our music showcase this term that will involve all students from Year 3 to Year 6. The date for the showcase is 2nd June at 6.00pm to be held at Centenary Hall. Students from our major ensemble groups will participate in music workshops this weekend. I thank the Wyvern P and F and especially the Creative Arts Committee for their strong support of this important event.
BEFORE SCHOOL SUPERVISION
A reminder that official supervision of students starts from 8:00am every day. I request for boys not arrive at school before this time. The only exceptions to this are for those boys who attend a school run activity or whose school bus arrives earlier than 8:00am. For their safety, we must ensure all boys are supervised at all times, as such any boy who arrives to school early will be required to attend OSH Club’s before school care service. Please use this link for further details about OSH Club’s hours and fees www.oshclub.com.au. Note, the car park entry door for students opens at 8:00am. Any student arriving before this time needs to access the school via the main school entrance on Cambridge Street.
CODE OF CONDUCT
With the winter sport season well under way, a reminder to parents that there is an IPSHA Code of Conduct guide on SPACES for spectators. It is important that adults set an appropriate and supportive tone for our sports programs. Adults must lead by example, and as with all other areas of the school, we must set a tone where boys can perform without undue pressure. We should fully support all volunteer officials and regard sportsmanship as a high virtue. The Directors of each sport are happy to respond to any questions about their development programs in the Prep School. For Rugby contact Ben Manion; bmanion@newington.nsw.edu.au. For Football contact Brian McCarthy; bmccarthy@newington.nsw.edu.au
