A Message from Mr Holden

As we approach the last week of the term, we are looking forward to welcoming parents into the school to share in some grades’ Learning Showcases and performances, including tomorrow’s K-2 Music Showcase. Your sons very much look forward to these occasions and we also highly value the special connection and partnership built by such activities. I thank you for making time in your busy schedules to attend these events.

Semester One reports will be available on Friday 18 June at 4.00pm. At the start of Term 3 there will be an opportunity to meet with Wyvern teachers (via Zoom) to discuss your son’s progress and areas for further development. The dates for the Parent Teacher Interviews are Tuesday 22 July (Week 2) and Tuesday 29 July (Week 3).  A link to book your interviews will be sent to you in Week 1 of Term 3.

At the end of this term Miss Aimee Parkinson will be leaving Wyvern to take up a teaching position at the Tokyo International School. Miss Parkinson has made a wonderful contribution to boys, parents and colleagues over the past seven and a half years, and in particular, has been instrumental in our implementation of the ‘Big Write’ approach to assist literacy development. We wish Aimee every success as she starts a new phase of her teaching career in Japan.

As this will be the last newsletter of the term, I thank boys and teachers for their excellent efforts this semester, as well as parents for your steadfast support. I wish you all an enjoyable long weekend, and then at the end of next week, a restorative winter break. I look forward to seeing boys returning for Term 3 on Monday 12 July.

Artist of the Week

K-2 Artist of the Week

In Visual Arts, Kindergarten have been exploring the difference between self-portraits and portraits.  They drew themselves first from memory and then fully engaged their noticing muscle to draw themselves from observation.  The boys worked really hard to include detail and represent their facial features.   All boys demonstrated a great sense of balance and excellent control of line whilst drawing.  Well done boys!

3-6 Artist of the Week

This week, the Artist of the Week comes from Year 4. Caleb Simpson was able to create a beautiful and quirky ‘Pop Art Car’. This car is a relief sculpture artwork that looks like it is popping out off the canvas. The boys worked with cups, ‘magiclay’, hot glue, wheels and recycled bottles to make their own classic car. They then observed the various processes of Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein. He enlarged the dots used for the mechanical process of printing into acrylic paintings. His dots were called ‘Benday’ dots. The boys have included these dots within their Pop Art backgrounds. Congratulations to all of Year 4 for their work which is currently displayed in the Year 4 area outside their classrooms.

Calling Parents of Wyvern to Help out at STEM Festival in August

If you are connected to a career in STEM – that is all areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and can spare some time to talk to the Year 5 and 6 boys about a career in STEM please read on.

As part of the P&F inaugural STEM Fest, Wyvern will be running a STEM Career’s Day on 20 August. We are looking for parents who can spare 1 hour or more at:

Session 1: 9:30am – 10:30am
Session 2: 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Session 3: 1:45pm – 2:45pm

What to expect?
You will present to a group of about 20 Year 5 and 6 boys for 2 x 20-minute timeslots. Each session will have different boys and your presentation and Q & A would be repeated.

Please email Sarah Capolupo (P&F Event Coordinator) at p&fwyvern@newington.nsw.edu.au if you can assist and state your area of expertise and which session or sessions you can help with.

What to do in the sessions?
This is a how to guide of what you might do in the 20-minute x 2 repeated session.

  1. Connect with the students on a personal level. Help them realise that you used to be just like them. Favourite subject at school, how you became interested in the career option – passions as a child etc

  2. Make it entertaining and interesting for them. Talk about science, engineering, technologies that they may know, but do not get overly technical. Talk in terms of your everyday activities.

  3. Be casual. Don’t use PowerPoint unless it’s a lot of cool pictures.

  4. Bring goodies or props that you may use in your job.

  5. Focus on the options: One of the great things about having a STEM degree is that there are a wide range of jobs they can have. Talk about what you do, but also discuss the other options that will be available to them later if they get into STEM subjects now and in senior school.

Further Information? Please email Emma Cope at the Wyvern front office ecope@newington.nsw.edu.au if you would like the link to a Zoom session on Tuesday 15 June at 6:00 pm for a Q & A with Lindsay Bosch and P&F members about this STEM Career’s day at Wyvern.

Thank you to those parents who have already emailed Sarah to show their interest in being part of this event.
