Achieving Alumni

Congratulations to James Olds (ON 2003) on his recent success at the 2019 Sydney Eisteddfod.

James won three sections: Male Operatic Voice, Lieder (Open Age); and French and German art song.

Australian Boomer Nick Kay (ON 2010) represented Australia in the fantastic Basketball win against USA 98-94 on Saturday 24 August 2019.

Congratulations to Alexander Lewis (ON 2000) and David Hansen (ON 1999) for their 2019 Helpmann Award nominations.  Alexander was nominated for Best Male Actor in a Musical.  David was nominated for Best Male Performer in an Opera.

Congratulations Tepai Moeroa (ON 2013). Tepai has signed a two year deal with the Waratahs and Australian Rugby. Tepai will commence with the Waratahs in 2020, once he completes the 2019 NRL season with the Parramatta Eels.

Congratulations to Alex Nichol (ON 2017) and Alex Potter (ON 2018) who won the Wyfold Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in England over the weekend. The four-man, Sydney Rowing Club crew beat N.S.R. Oslo to claim to the top spot. Well done! https://youtu.be/n5SImfyAths

Harry Crouch (ON 2018) was a member of the Australian Men’s Under 23 Eight that made the final of the rowing Under 23 – 8 at the 2019 World Championships in USA in July.

Dr Russell F. Waugh (ON 1958) and his wife, Mrs Bernadette Waugh, were each awarded OAMs in the Queens Birthday Honours list on Monday 10th June 2019.

Dr Russell Waugh officially received his OAM for Service to the Community of Perth, but he also has an extensive academic record with an international reputation.

Mrs Waugh officially received her OAM for Service to Librarianship, but she has done extensive voluntary work over her time.

Frank Howarth PSM (ON 1969) has recently been appointed Chair of the Heritage Council of NSW. 

Congratulations to Alan Alaalatoa (ON 2011) on his selection representing Australia in the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. 

Uniting Church News: Rev Simon Hansford (ON 1980) was re-elected as Moderator of the Synod NSW/ACT. Simon’s term was due to conclude in 2020 but the Synod re-elected him to a second term, meaning he’ll serve until 2023. This has never happened in the history of the Church and meant a change to the By-Laws of the Church.  Congratulations to Rev Ian Diamond (ON 1961) celebrating 50 years since his ordination.

The Balmain Rock Project has won prestigious awards this year; a commendation for ‘Heritage – Creative Adaption’ at the Australian Institute of Architect’s NSW Chapter Awards, and National winner of the ‘House in a Heritage Context’ at the HOUSES Awards.The Balmain Rock was designed by architects Benn+Penna, Old Boy – Andrew Benn (ON 1993).
