Over the September/October holidays Newington GPS competition teams and junior squads prepared themselves for their respective summer sports. Outlined below is a review of what took place in the holidays.
BASKETBALL – Sydney Schools Shootout Tournament
On the 5th and 6th of October 2012, Newington competed in the Sydney Schools Shootout with good results. The Sydney Schools Shootout had 40 teams playing in both Premier division (1st teams) and Development division (2nd teams) Teams are placed into pools where a round robin takes place with the top two teams progressing through to a finals system. Both Newington teams made it through to the quarter finals where they were both knocked out by St Augustine’s 1st and 2nds teams. The tournament provides excellent competition in the lead up to the GPS season allowing coaches to implement systems of play and to evaluate players.

ROWING
Attendance and attitude were excellent at the recent October rowing camp which was held in the second week of the holidays at the Newington boatshed. We welcomed several new coaches to the program and they have all settled in well, gaining a good rapport with the boys and setting high standards out on the water.
Over 30 Year 7 boys tried out rowing for the first time and were quick to take up the various skills and routines. The Year 9 Quads showed up in droves and attacked their work with a high level of enthusiasm. The Year 10 Eights showed significant improvement from the beginning to the end of the week. A large number of senior rowers attended the camp and were impressive with their work ethic and professionalism throughout the week. We welcomed several new rowers and they are picking up the technical nuances of rowing very well. We finished the week with a tough Rob Rowland-Smith session on the Saturday. We have commenced a buddy system whereby every Year 7 rower is paired up with a senior rower and this started well on the final day of camp.
***The Rowing Program is expanding in size and is in need of three more coxes for the senior crews. Coxes are responsible for steering and commands in the boat and take on great responsibility for the success of their crew. The position would be a fantastic opportunity for boys in any year group who weigh between 45 and 55kg and who are keen to represent the College in a high profile sport. ATHLETICS
Over the weekend of Oct 13 and 14 the NSW ALL SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS were held at Sydney Olympic Park (SOPAC). Newington had a team of twelve athletes compete with the following results;
Three new Newington records were set:
