Match of the round – Round 9
10 Years Football (Legends) v Coogee Prep
On a windy Saturday morning, 4 August, Newington’s U10 Legends soccer team took on Coogee Prep at Heffron park, Maroubra. Last time we met this team we thrashed them so we looked to do it again.
Unfortunately, Heffron park is so big that Coogee had to send one person to tell us we were at the wrong end. We all piled into our cars and drove up the other end, which ate into our warm up time to prepare for the game.
When we finally settled and were prepared, it was time for the game to start. Coogee kicked off the match and we had the ball a few seconds later. Newington and Coogee started with close goals, and halfway through the first half Reuben scored. The match was 1-0 to Newington at half time.
In the second half, it took a while to get through the Coogee defence. Then we realized the Coogee’s defence was strong, and we needed to pass more to get through it. The first goal of the second half was again scored by Reuben. Confidence was growing and when Reuben was fowled close to the goal, he had a chance to make it three. Unfortunately his shot went just wide of the post, but we were still leading the game.
Harry Bell did more tackles after that and then the third goal was scored. Harry then added another two goals as he ran clear and beat the goal keeper to make it 5-0 at the end of the game.
Thank you to Mr Edwards for coaching us, and all the parents that let us travel so long from home. The points were 1 point to Alex Kerr, 2 points to Harry Bell, Jack Lu and Patrick Christensen, and the man of the match was shared by Reuben and Tim Riddell. This means that the Legends are one win away from going through the season undefeated. Great job boys!
