Faith Matters

The Victorious Limp

Virtuoso violinist Pinchas Zukerman was giving a master class to a group of young artist who had come to the Aspen Music Festival from the four corners of the world. The auditorium was filled with their peers, distinguished teachers and performers; the atmosphere was electric. To each of the talented performers Zukerman offered friendly advice and encouragement, discussing their playing in detail, and invariably picking up his own violin to demonstrate finer points of technique and interpretation.

Finally came the turn of a young musician who performed brilliantly. When the applause subsided, Zukerman complimented the artist, then walked over to his own violin, caressed it, tucked it under his chin, paused a long moment, and then, without playing a note or uttering a word gently placed it back in its case. Once more, the applause broke out, and this time it was deafening, in recognition of the master, who could pay such a gracious compliment.

After his triple denial of Jesus, what future would have awaited the disciple Peter if he had to depend on my patience, understanding, and compassion? Instead of a shrug, sneer, slap or curse, Jesus responded with the subtlest and most gracious compliment imaginable. He named Peter the leader of the faith community and entrusted him with authority to preach the Good News.

The limping Peter’s betrayal of Jesus, like so many of our own moral relapses and refusals of grace, was not a terminal failure but the occasion for painful personal growth in fidelity.

Tuckshop

This is a fast and furious term, full of appointments, parties, shopping and lists of things to do BUT there are fewer volunteers in Tuckshop.

I’d ask everyone to consider, if it is at all possible, putting your name down for at least one turn in Tuck Shop each term next year.

The boys seem to have taken to trying varying items on the menu – please note there is a Summer Menu – it is available here or in hard copy from the Tuckshop. An asterisk denotes price changes to a two items on the menu, Paddle Pops are now $1.60 and Wraps are $4.80, Frozen orange quarters (30c), Quelch Stick ice treats (60c), along with Icy Twist ($1.20), Calippo ($1), Paddle Pop ($1.60), and Frozen Yoghurt ($2) Mango or Strawberry, can help keep a lad cool.

Tuckshop Door Special

Beef Burger and Salad $4.50, available on Thursday and Friday (or the old traditional Chicken Burger and Salad). The beef rissole is made with premium minced beef, onion, egg and rolled oats. Butcher’s Delight at East Lindfield supplies our fresh chicken for wraps, sandwiches and teriyaki sushi, minced beef for bolognaise and taco sauces and sausages for Beef in a Blanket.

A Message from Mr Wyatt

Being better than our best and reaching our potential

At the beginning of this term I spoke with the all of the boys about a couple of key messages that I wanted them to take on board in their learning throughout Term 4. The two messages were the importance of taking risks in learning and being better than they think they are.

Risk taking is a concept that is often discussed in the context of learning and rarely understood or practiced. It is the ability and willingness to place yourself in situations outside your comfort zone in order to have new learning experiences. For this to occur, students need to feel safe, encouraged and prepared to fail. Failure, after all, is essential for learning. Without failing, we will never reach our potential because we will always operate within a ‘safe’ zone that doesn’t stretch our existing boundaries.

Risk taking is very closely connected with the idea of being better than you think you are. Recent research by John Hattie, a New Zealand academic who has conducted vast research into the effects on students learning, indicates that students who aim for what they believe they can do fail to reach their potential. He concludes that students are very good at delivering to teachers and parents what is ‘expected’ rather than pushing themselves to deliver unexpected outcomes.

At Lindfield, we want to aim for excellence not merely mediocrity, but even more important than results, we want our boys to be their best in all areas of school life, academic, co-curricular and pastoral. Ultimately, this requires them to give their best at all times and to push themselves beyond their own expectations.

I look forward to our boys surprising us through their risk taking.

Prize Giving

At last week’s P & F Meeting I discussed the changes that are being made to awards for this year’s Prize Giving. In redeveloping the awards we considered parental feedback and discussed the importance of highlighting effort, particularly in the Junior Primary years.

A summary of the changes can be found at the following location on Newington Spaces https://spaces.newington.nsw.edu.au/lindfield/articles/111-prize-giving-changes-for-2012

If you would like further information please contact your son’s class teacher or myself.

Newington Spaces

I hope by now that many parents have accessed Newington Spaces to read my weekly updates or the other material that is populating the site. If you haven’t done so already, can I strongly encourage you to do so?

To access Newington Spaces you’ll first need to activate your personal login. Visit https://mylogin.newington.nsw.edu.au and enter the email address the College has on file for you – the system will email you a link to choose a password and activate your account. Because you’ll be logging in as an individual with distinct access rights, if the College lists the same email for multiple members of your household please contact the Lindfield office so that we can sort that out. Once activated, login at http://spaces.newington.nsw.edu.au to begin. If you require support with this process please contact the School Office.

Enrolments

We are in the fortunate position to have a few vacancies for next year. If you know anyone who might be interested in enrolling their son in Years K, 1, 2, 3 or 4 for next year, please encourage them to call the School Office on 9416 4280.

Martial Arts – Wednesday Afternoons

Logan Ford achieved the first milestone in his martial arts training, which is his Red belt. The higher levels require significantly more learning and effort to achieve and Jack Middleton, Henry Taylor, Harrison Miles and William Fisher earned a Leopard patch each in recognition of the excellence of their approach to achieving this.

Will Fisher achieved his Orange belt on 17 October. Will always has excellent focus during class and has been consistent with doing his best. As with our other young martial artists, this achievement recognises both consistent effort and knowing the techniques for his grade level. Well done!

The boys have started wearing their new Dragon Kids shirts, which look fantastic. As they are awarded patches for excellence of effort (rather than the fastest or best), and earn their Silver Stars for general good behaviour and habits, these will be attached to the shirts to show progress.

P and F News

Dear Lindfield Community

Let me start by introducing myself and the rest of the P&F Committee for the incoming year.

I (Judy Ryan) have 2 boys at the school, Angus Bourne in Year 2 and Freddie Bourne in Kindy, so have been a part of the school for the last 3 years. Our new VP is Caroline Forsyth whose son Harry is also in Kindergarten. Luckily our current P&F secretary, Collette Middleton, has agreed to stay on and her son is Jack in Year 2. Daniel Chippeck, whose son Reuben is in Year 4, has thankfully decided to give the P&F another year as well in his role as Treasurer. I would like to thank them all for giving up their time and participating on the committee for 2013.

I would especially like to thank Catherine Mellor for the last 2 years as President and her ongoing support for the rest of 2012. Catherine has been a delight to work with and no doubt will be a support to the Stanmore Campus when the youngest of her sons joins Year 7 next year.

We have a number of vacancies still to be filled on some of our Committees and I would encourage you to have a look at Newington Spaces were we have uploaded the vacancies and the Job Descriptions for your perusal. If you are interested or have any specific questions about the roles please don’t hesitate to contact me on judyryan65@bigpond.com or Collette Middleton on collettem@bigpond.com

The roles that particularly need filling are Social and Fundraising Committee and the Sports Committee (this is for parents of Years 3-6 as connect with school sport).

As always we need additional volunteers for Tuckshop and for our Prep Shop, particularly in light of the fact that we will be losing some of our dedicated Year 6 volunteer parents at the end of the year. If you are interested in doing either you can get nomination forms from the office or email Kathryn Nordstrom for Tuckshop knordstrom@optusnet.com.au and Sing Sing Wan for Prep Shop singsing@familywan.com

As always the P&F is here to assist and I thank you, on behalf of the committee, for your support.

Kindest regards

Judy Ryan
President P&F Committee

A Day with French Flavour

Over the last couple of weeks two whole school events have epitomised the community spirit and good will that exists throughout our school community. Tuesday’s French Day was a fantastic day celebrating and learning about the French culture and language. A huge thanks goes to Madame Pixton for her organisation and creativity. It was brilliant to watch the boys engage in a wide variety of French activities including the eating at the Café, Art, Music and PE activities and French computer games. It was also great to be able to welcome so many parents to the afternoon’s plays and presentations.

The Year 6 Fair which was held a couple of weeks ago was also a tremendous event that allowed the Year 6 boys to demonstrate leadership and to serve the other boys by creating a range of fun-filled activities. After spending so much time planning and preparing for the day, it was great to see smiles on all of the boys faces. The Year 6 boys, under the leadership of Mr C, should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Lindfield is certainly a special place. Events like these reinforce this and aid the ongoing development of a positive learning culture.

Year 6 Newington Mother and Son Dinner

Two weeks ago the Year 6 mothers and sons joined the Wyvern mothers and sons for a wonderful evening of good company, laughter, delicious food, great views and lovely atmosphere at the Deckhouse in Woolwich. The mothers and sons even got the chance to show off their gangnam style dancing. Who said boys do not like dancing? One of the most memorable part of the Mother & Son event was when each boy gave his mother a single pink rose and a kiss, something to treasure and remember when we are going through the tween years. When it came time to leave, the evening seemed to have gone by far too quickly, and we felt like Cinderella when the clock struck midnight.  Luckily, our carriages remained and we were able to sing and dance all the way back home.

School Leaders Pass on Tips to Year 5

In preparation for coming Student Leadership opportunities, Year 5 welcomed Mr Wyatt and the current School Captain and House Captains into class for a panel discussion on ‘what it takes to be a good leader’. To lead is to put others first. While we might look keenly at what a boy has done in the past, what’s more important is what he can do in the future. We are looking for boys who can influence, inspire and care about others and the school.

Current primary leaders Andrew Himmelhoch, Thomas Bell and Simon James, gave their insight into their engagement with leadership in 2012, passing on some hints and tips.

Year 5 students engaged with these fine role models by asking questions and seeking advice that would help them to prepare for leadership aspirations, provide some insight into the nature of leadership and encourage them to be leaders, even without a badge.

Whilst targeted towards the Year 5 students, this was a fantastic opportunity for the three School Captains to help build the legacy of school leadership and further develop their own skills.

Year 5 boys finished the session with a heightened understanding of the role of student leadership, many more motivated than ever to seek the leadership opportunities. Congratulations to Andrew, Tom and Simon for being wonderful ambassadors for the roles and for being enthusiastic contributors to the discussion.

We look forward to receiving nominations from our aspiring Year 5 boys ready to take on challenge of School and House Captains for 2013.

 Year 4 Cricket v Mosman Prep: 27 October 2012

On a sunny Saturday morning Newington 10’s cricket played Mosman Prep. Mosman won the toss and decided to bowl. We got some great sixes and fours during our batting, with all the boys doing well. We ended up scoring 160 off our 16 overs which was a great effort.

Then Mr Lygo gave us a quick pep talk, and we were out on the field. We got some great run outs and all the boys bowled really well. Mosman were catching up, but we managed to hold our game together and managed to just get over the line. Mosman ended up on 149.

1 point went to the whole team, 2 points went to Nicholas Bunis and 3 points went to Alistair Shaw. Great game boys and thanks for the parents for supporting.

Swimming Update

As you are aware, the boys have been taking part in swimming as part of the PDHPE program. This is the third year I have been a part of this unit and I am amazed at the progression of some of the boys, particularly in Junior Primary. Boys like Jack Middleton and Laksh Pande who were in life jackets in Kindergarten (due to fear) are now swimming with great confidence and are even attempting Butterfly with great results.

The unit was designed to expose the students to water safety and swimming ability and all boys have embraced the initiative, completing stroke correction and practice, diving for rings and will all take part in modified games of water polo at the conclusion of the unit. I am very proud to be conducting this unit again and I wanted to formally thank you and congratulate you as parents for the great work you have done in maintaining and extending their knowledge, skill and confidence in the water.
