Tuckshop

The Autumn/Winter Menu has been going well, especially with the colder weather lately!

Pies and Sausage Rolls are always popular; don’t forget the Tuesday Special – Butter Chicken and Rice – not spicy and gluten free. There is also Fried Rice with Ham and Egg, which is also gluten free (g/f soy sauce used and the ham is also gluten free).

A warm Apple Pie has been popular for lunch but if your son would like one for morning tea, it would need to be ordered – there is also Hot Chocolate available for either morning tea or lunch. A note will be attached to your son’s lunch order, reminding him to return to pick up the Hot Chocolate drink.

Lunch Wallets are available in Prep Shop and Tuck Shop for $10.00. They have a window for the child’s name and class as well as a zipper closure for the order and coins. A Velcro fastener and double fibre sack, keeps the meal insulated and secure.

HELP PLEASE: There are gaps on the volunteer roster when it would be wonderful to have someone fill in:

Friday 24 May – 11-2; Friday 14 June – 9-12; Tuesday 18 June – 9-12.

Faith Matters

God wants to be known, but not in a way that overwhelms us, that takes away the possibility of love freely given. “God is like a person who clears his throat whilst hiding and so gives himself away,” says Meister Eckhart.

You’ll never know where he will turn up, or whom he’ll speak through, or what unlikely scenario he’ll use for his purpose.

He came unexpectedly as a child in a feed trough. He died as a criminal, a curse man as some were filled with sorrow and others were filled with self-satisfaction. After the resurrection, Mary Magdalene was looking right at him but thought he was a gardener.

Where is God? He’s closer than you think.

Mr Peter Morphew
School Chaplain

A Message from Mr Wyatt

Parent Workshop – ‘Mathematics and the PYP’

What is the purpose of Primary School Mathematics? This is an interesting question that perhaps you haven’t really considered. Is it in order to pass tests? To become an accountant? For problem solving purposes? To prepare students for real life?

This question is an important one that has driven our thinking about Mathematics within the PYP framework at Lindfield. The PYP learning framework aims at developing skilful learners; able to articulate what they have learnt, how they have learnt it and how to apply their learning in a variety of situations. We are also very aware that not all learners are the same and therefore a Mathematics program must allow for all students to grow and develop and to experience success.

Our approach to Mathematics is evolving, although we are maintaining a strong commitment to ‘the basics’. Each of our classes has a Number focus at the beginning of every Maths lesson to ensure they are always developing their basic number facts and skills in the Number strand. Beyond this things get interesting.

We are in the process of developing two types of Mathematics units; stand-alone and integrated. Stand-alone units are units of work that last for several weeks to allow for in-depth inquiry into a particular Mathematics concept. An example of this might be a unit on Fractions and Decimals or Measurement. Throughout the unit the boys will have opportunities to develop their thinking through open-ended, inquiry-based activities that support each of them (at their point of need) in building on their existing knowledge and understanding (this is gauged by a pre-assessment task).

Integrated units allow boys to make connections between skills learnt in Mathematics and the content being learnt in their Unit of Inquiry. This is common with the Mathematics strands of Measurement, Space and Geometry, and Chance and Data.

To provide additional support to our boys in the area of Mathematics, once a fortnight Stage 2 and 3 each get together for an hour long Mathematics Problem solving Workshop. During the workshop the boys work on a particular problem solving strategy and have the opportunity to choose the level of support or challenge that they would like to engage in with one of four teachers.

What is the purpose of Primary School Mathematics? We think that first and foremost it is to develop learners equipped with strong Mathematical understanding and skills and an ability to apply them in different real life problem solving situations.

Woolworths Earn & Learn

Earn and Learn Points

Over the last couple of years our community has taken part in the Woolworths Earn and Learn scheme which allows us to purchase additional resources for the school. We feel very blessed to be supported by such a generous community.

This year, with your support, we will once again participate in this scheme in a slightly different manner. Given how well resourced our school is we thought this would be a great opportunity to support another school community that is in greater need than us. Given our connection over the years with the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children we thought it was appropriate to donate our school tokens to ‘RIDBC Garfield Barwick School’ at North Parramatta.

Please send any tokens to the School Office so that we can make a difference to another school community.

Sesquicentenary Whole School Photo

As part of our Sesquicentenary Celebrations we have organised to have a whole school photo that is representative of all of the boys and staff from the three campuses. This photo will take place at Stanmore on Thursday 6 June 2013.  For further information please refer to the permission note.

Garage Sale

On Sunday 5 May, we (Nilanka Abbey and Harry L’Orange) had a garage sale to raise money for Liam Knight. We sold old toys, books and household items, and had a homemade cake stall and sausage sizzle.  We made $896 and 40% was given to Liam and the balance was divided between ourselves.  The reason why we gave the money to Liam was because at his friends 17th birthday party he was injured by gate crashers.  They threw a pole which hit Liam in the head and he was in hospital for a long time with a very severe head injury.  Thankfully Liam is making a good recovery now.  Liam’s brother and his wife came to our sale. The garage sale was a great success and we all had lots of fun.

The Sesquicentenary Founders Society Day

The Sesquicentenary Founders Society Day was held on Friday 17 May. Now in its fourth year the Founders Society, the College’s Bequest group, was established in 2010 to recognise and honour those who have remembered the College in their Will.

25 new members, including; Old Boys, past staff and partners were inducted into the Founders Society for 2013 by its patrons Mr Barry Collins OAM (ON ’52), Mr Phil Davis OAM/Past staff and Headmaster, Dr David Mulford, taking the group to 88 members strong.

The event included a formal ceremony on the lawn, outside the Founders Building, decorated with the new Sesquicentenary banners, along the historic colonnades. Seven current Founders Society members, each representing a group within the Newington community e.g. rowing, read out a personal declaration of their time at the College and thanking the new members joining them in The Founders Society. The declarations, attached to white roses, were planted in the pots in each colonnade as a memento and will remain there for the week. This will allow current students a chance to read and acknowledge this special group of people who are committed playing their part in securing Newington’s future.

Music Notes

Music Weekend

Last Saturday and Sunday boys from the School Choir, String Ensemble and Band had a weekend of playing music with the Wyvern boys. On the Saturday the Choir was preparing music for next term’s Founders Concert. The Chapel rang out with Parry’s ‘I was Glad’ and Dan Walker’s ‘The Wanderer’ which was composed for Newington Preparatory Choirs.  On the Sunday the instrumentalists arrived. There were tutors running sectionals, giving students more specialised help on the music that was being prepared for various upcoming performances.

Thank you very much to all the boys for attending these two days.

Education Sunday

This Sunday, the School Choir will be performing at St David’s Uniting Church, Lindfield at 10:00am for the Education Sunday Service. Everyone is welcome to come and listen. There will be other local schools performing as well.  A yummy morning tea is provided afterwards.

Musica Viva in Schools

Next Friday, The Sousaphonics will be performing for the boys in the Don Brown Hall from 2:00pm. You are welcome to come and watch.
