Book Week
This year Wyvern will celebrate the majority of Children’s Book Week activities from August 21st until August 23rd in Week 6. This is what is happening for Book Week this year at Wyvern.
Morris Gleitzman – Years 5 & 6 Thursday August 15th @ 9:30am
We are very excited that Morris Gleitzman, one of Australia’s most successful authors, will visit our school for Book Week this year. Morris was born in England and emigrated to Australia in 1969 so he could escape from school and become a very famous writer. Before realising that dream, he had a colourful career as a paperboy, department store Santa Claus and chicken defroster. Morris is the author of some of Australia’s favourite children’s books, including Two Weeks with the Queen, Boy Overboard, Once, Then, Now, After. The Toad Series, and his latest book, Extra Time. Here is the blurb for the book:
When 13-year-old Matt is discovered impressing the livestock in an Aussie country town with his remarkable soccer skills, he’s offered the chance of a lifetime – a try-out at one of Europe’s biggest and most glamorous soccer clubs. His younger sister Bridie goes with him as his manager and tells us their story – warts, goals and all. The funny and moving story of a sister’s love for her brother, and how it survives everything fate throws at it, including the millions of pounds and mountains of pressure at the top of the world’s most popular sport.

Mark Greenwood – Years 3 & 4 Thursday March 22nd @ 2:00pm
Mark Greenwood is an author, musician and storyteller with a passion for Australian history and folklore. His children’s books are prompted by an interest in multicultural literature and the unique way illustrated books can assist children to develop an understanding of other cultures and perspectives. The Legend of Moondyne Joe and The Legend of Lasseter’s Reef aim to encourage an appreciation of Australia’s unique myths and legends. Both books have won the West Australian Premier’s Award for children’s books. In Fortuyn’s Ghost, he tells the story of an ill-fated Dutch East India ship. Simpson and His Donkey, is a well-known story about the ideals of courage, sacrifice and mateship that distinguish and unite all Australians and was an honour book for a Children’s Book Council – Eve Pownall Award (2009). Ned Kelly and the Green Sash, recent winner of the WAYBRA Hoffman Award, is a window into the character of a poor boy, once honoured for his bravery, who grew up to become Australia’s most famous bushranger. In 2012 Mark celebrated the release of The Greatest Liar on Earth illustrated by Frané Lessac and in 2013 Jandamarra, illustrated by Terry Denton. We are fortunate to be able to engage this highly respected author and storyteller for this year’s Book Week as Mark is travelling from Western Australia for Book Week visits.
