Reading Challenges 2013

It is wonderful to see all the excited faces of the boys who are coming to the Library to present their completed Reading Challenges. Many of the boys have made a tremendous effort to complete multiple Reading Challenges this year. For boys, parents and teachers who are in the process of reading and recording their last few books, you have until Friday August 9th to hand in your completed challenge.

Thank you to all parents and teachers for supporting, encouraging and modelling good reading habits for the boys over these past months.  Your participation in this worthwhile endeavour is truly appreciated.

Sesquicentenary Founders Day Service

A very special Founders Day Thanksgiving service was held at 8.30am Tuesday, 16 July in Centenary Hall. With special guest, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales attending, there was an air of pride, gratitude and excitement as the College Council, staff, parents, boys and our guests from Tupou College, Tonga stood to sing the national anthem. The Headmaster Dr David Mulford led the service with an official welcome, which was streamed live to Years 7 and 8 boys in the Chapel and Old Boys Lecture Theatre. The speech can be found on the Headmaster’s blog.

The College Chaplain, Rev. David Williams gave a stirring homily reflecting on the College’s legacy as a place of innovation and egalitarianism, which can be read here. Both Tupou College and Newington College musicians sang and played before the assembly, followed by Council Chairman, the Hon. Angus Talbot, inviting the Governor to address the assembled guests, dignitaries, boys and staff.

Her Excellency spoke about Newington’s earliest founders such as James Egan Moulton who choose to open a school based on strong Christian values that nurtured boys who would become men of the world to lead the nation in the realms of citizenship, academia, the arts and in sport. She also made particular mention of Newington’s unique tie with Tupou College and the importance of this tie today, as Australia moves into the Asia Pacific century. Poetry Performance Competition 2013

Over the next few weeks boys will be preparing to take part in the Poetry Performance Competition, now firmly established as one of Wyvern’s major events.  The competition presents an excellent opportunity for all students in the school to refine and demonstrate their public speaking skills.  All boys will enter the competition and are expected to select a poem, learn it off by heart and then perform it in front of the class.  Finalists will be selected from each class.  Year level finals will then be held to decide the top three places in each year group.

Class teachers will assist their students with the selection of poems.  In addition, Mrs Barnes in the library will have the school’s poetry collection on hand to assist in this process.  Boys may also bring in poems from home.  Each boy is expected to retain a copy of his poem, as well as provide a copy for his class teacher for approval by the end of week 3.  All poems should be published work by recognised authors.

As a guideline, poems should be of approximately the following lengths:

Kindy – between 4 – 6 simple lines (not nursery rhymes)

Year 1 – between 6 – 10 simple lines

Year 2 – between 8 – 12 lines

Years 3 & 4 – between 10 -20 lines

Years 5 & 6 – between 18 – 30 lines

Class heats will be held in week 5 of this term with four boys from each class being selected to go through to the year level finals to be held in week 6.  There will be a Poetry Performance Competition Award Ceremony on Friday 30 August at 2pm. At this time the 1st place winners from each year group will perform their poems. We thank the P&F for their kind donation of prizes which will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. All finalists will be presented with Highly Commended certificates.

The following guidelines will be used when judging the boys:

Difficulty of poem (not length) -10 points

Voice (use/projection, tone, diction, pace) -10 points

Animation (manner, personality, gestures) – 10 points

Overall presentation and style – 10 points

No costumes may be used, however, the boys are permitted to use a maximum of 1 prop.  Expression, gestures and body language are to be encouraged.

Book Week

This year Wyvern will celebrate the majority of Children’s Book Week activities from August 21st  until August 23rd in Week 6. This is what is happening for Book Week this year at Wyvern.

Morris Gleitzman – Years 5 & 6 Thursday August 15th @ 9:30am

We are very excited that Morris Gleitzman, one of Australia’s most successful authors, will visit our school for Book Week this year. Morris was born in England and emigrated to Australia in 1969 so he could escape from school and become a very famous writer. Before realising that dream, he had a colourful career as a paperboy, department store Santa Claus and chicken defroster. Morris is the author of some of Australia’s favourite children’s books, including Two Weeks with the Queen, Boy Overboard, Once, Then, Now, After. The Toad Series, and his latest book, Extra Time. Here is the blurb for the book:

When 13-year-old Matt is discovered impressing the livestock in an Aussie country town with his remarkable soccer skills, he’s offered the chance of a lifetime – a try-out at one of Europe’s biggest and most glamorous soccer clubs. His younger sister Bridie goes with him as his manager and tells us their story – warts, goals and all. The funny and moving story of a sister’s love for her brother, and how it survives everything fate throws at it, including the millions of pounds and mountains of pressure at the top of the world’s most popular sport.

If you wish to pre-order a copy of Morris Gleitzman’sExtra Time’ please click here.

Mark Greenwood – Years 3 & 4 Thursday March 22nd @ 2:00pm

Mark Greenwood is an author, musician and storyteller with a passion for Australian history and folklore. His children’s books are prompted by an interest in multicultural literature and the unique way illustrated books can assist children to develop an understanding of other cultures and perspectives. The Legend of Moondyne Joe and The Legend of Lasseter’s Reef aim to encourage an appreciation of Australia’s unique myths and legends. Both books have won the West Australian Premier’s Award for children’s books. In Fortuyn’s Ghost, he tells the story of an ill-fated Dutch East India ship. Simpson and His Donkey, is a well-known story about the ideals of courage, sacrifice and mateship that distinguish and unite all Australians and was an honour book for a Children’s Book Council – Eve Pownall Award (2009). Ned Kelly and the Green Sash, recent winner of the WAYBRA Hoffman Award, is a window into the character of a poor boy, once honoured for his bravery, who grew up to become Australia’s most famous bushranger. In 2012 Mark celebrated the release of The Greatest Liar on Earth illustrated by Frané Lessac and in 2013 Jandamarra, illustrated by Terry Denton. We are fortunate to be able to engage this highly respected author and storyteller for this year’s Book Week as Mark is travelling from Western Australia for Book Week visits.

If you wish to pre-order any of Mark Greenwood’s books, please click here.

Mic Conway – K-2 Wednesday August 21st @ 2:00pm

ARIA award winning, Mic Conway is an innovative performer who has worked extensively in music, theatre, film, television and theatre-in-education. Working in Australia and internationally, Mic started in Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, co-founded Circus Oz, and has appeared in numerous films and television shows. He has fronted Mic Conway’s National Junk Band for over ten years and is seen regularly at concerts, festivals and venues around Australia. Mic has appeared on and written songs and scenes on various children’s television shows, including ABC for Kids, The Wiggles, Humphrey Bear and is even the voice of Wags the Dog in The Wiggles TV shows and DVDs. His show Rubbish is an innovative performance about the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We are very pleased to have Mic with us to help celebrate Book Week.

OH WHAT A NIGHT! – A WHITE CHRISTMAS IN JULY DELIGHT

It is true to say that when Wyvern Parents get together they KNOW HOW TO PARTY and the White Christmas in July event was no exception. The venue, food and people were all fabulous and everyone had a fantastic time. Thank you to the Kindy 2013 parents that assisted in organising the night with special thanks to Yamila and Mira. In addition, thank you to everyone that came along and helped Phil Argy and myself celebrate our last Wyvern function. It was a truly special occasion as my eldest son started in Kindy at Wyvern where I assisted with that Christmas function, so I feel I have gone full circle. All the wonderful comments about my time at Wyvern that Philip Argy presented were quite touching and I was truly surprised by all the love in the room. Thank you to all. It was a great night all round.

Congratulations to Rebecca Turnbull who won the lucky door prize of a TABLE of 10 at the Black & White Ball. You will have 8 new best friends. In addition, congratulations to Adam Hicks (Edward KL) who won the raffle prize of a table of 10 to the Black and White Ball.

A Message from Mr Holden

On Tuesday 30 July the 2013 Wyvern Biennale Art Show was launched with a special opening at the  Concordia Gallery with over 200 works from our Kindergarten, Year 3 and Year 6 students  featured. Those attending the opening were impressed with the creativity, diversity and quality of pieces displayed. I congratulate all students and staff for their superb efforts in putting on such a high quality exhibition. In particular, Ms Meredith Buining and Mrs Debbie Bourke, our Art teachers, have worked tirelessly over the recent weeks. In addition, special thanks goes to Mr Terry Fotaras for his enormous efforts and support.

The exhibition remains open for parents to view until Tuesday 6 August (10.00am – 2.00pm week days and 10.00am – 3.00pm on Saturday).

Just a reminder that our annual Newington Preparatory Schools’ Inter-House Athletics Carnival Years 3-6 takes place on Monday 5 August at Hombush.  Please note that buses will leave Wyvern 7.30am SHARP and will return to school in time for our normal dismissal time of 3.15pm.  Some parents might find it more convenient to take their sons directly to Homebush. If this is the case, please contact Mr Mark Caulfield at mcaulfield@newington.nsw.edu.au should you wish to do this.

We look forward to an exciting day!
