Pyrmont Ultimo Landcare Project

The Kitchen Garden Club has been running at Wyvern for five years. During Friday lunchtimes, boys volunteer their time and effort to help grow a whole range of fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs.  It was members of this club that had the opportunity to share their green fingers with the Pyrmont Ultimo Landcare Project. This volunteer group is led by Mary Mortimer and work adjacent to the light rail line at the Wentworth Park Light Rail stop.

The site used to be rundown and covered in weeds and rubbish. Over the time that the landcare group have worked there, the space has been transformed into a pleasant green space within a densely populated urban area.

On a Wednesday morning late in October, ten Wyvern boys left their pencil cases behind to roll their sleeves up and offer their help. With trowels in hand, the boys took on the task of planting indigenous plants alongside the landcare volunteers. The Wyvern boys chatted happily with the volunteers as they dug holes, planted and watered the plants, enjoying the opportunity to be outside and get their hands dirty. This was a chance for the boys to be involved in service learning and look to help those in the community around us. We hope that this is the start of a relationship that can continue into the future.  Next time you are on the light rail and pass through Wentworth Park, we hope you too enjoy the view.
