Class teachers reminded their students that today is International Women’s Day which is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

I was recently reminded about the true story of Mrs Rosa Parks, who in 1955 in Montgomery USA, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. At that time in that city there existed a policy of segregation of black and white passengers. On that day, Mrs Parks, by taking a simple stance (which ended with her being arrested) started a process of much needed change. Following Mrs Parks’ arrest there ensued a 381-day bus boycott by black people that helped launch nationwide efforts to end segregation in many areas of civic life.

Women such as Rosa Parks are wonderful role models, not least because of her quiet determination and courage to stand up for what was morally right. It is important at Wyvern that we take time to recognise such mighty achievements as well as to advocate for and to promote woman’s rights across the globe and in our country.
