A Message from Mr Holden

Class teachers reminded their students that today is International Women’s Day which is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

I was recently reminded about the true story of Mrs Rosa Parks, who in 1955 in Montgomery USA, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. At that time in that city there existed a policy of segregation of black and white passengers. On that day, Mrs Parks, by taking a simple stance (which ended with her being arrested) started a process of much needed change. Following Mrs Parks’ arrest there ensued a 381-day bus boycott by black people that helped launch nationwide efforts to end segregation in many areas of civic life.

Women such as Rosa Parks are wonderful role models, not least because of her quiet determination and courage to stand up for what was morally right. It is important at Wyvern that we take time to recognise such mighty achievements as well as to advocate for and to promote woman’s rights across the globe and in our country.

Artists of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

Kindergarten

Max Davies KW

Kindergarten have been exploring the work of Mondrian.  They created a mixed media Mondrian inspired artwork, carefully thinking about composition.  Max has used primary colours in an interesting way and has shown great craftsmanship and balance in his finished piece.  Well done, Max.

Year 2

Hamish Walker 2H

Jay Ziri 2S

Year 2 are exploring basic fundamental skills in figurative drawing.  They began by sketching stick men to look at proportion and pose and they have been learning to shade in order to  add form.  Hamish and Jay worked really hard to create well resolved finished pieces.  Great work, boys!

Become a Wyvern Frog Finder

Still Time to Jump Onboard and Become a Wyvern Frog Finder

There is still time to download the Australian Museum’s FrogID App and become involved in and contribute to, one of the largest  national citizens’ science projects that is helping scientists learn more about what is happening to Australia’s frogs.

Australia has over 240 known species of frog, almost all of which are found nowhere else in the world. Some species are flourishing, like the Striped Marsh Frog. But others have declined dramatically since the 1980s, and four have become extinct. Can you help by locating frogs in your vicinity?

So far, Wyvern boys have located the following species of frogs in their neighbourhoods.

Striped Marsh Frog (found near Woolwich Dock by Hugh Edmundson and in a Lilyfield backyard pond by Mrs Barnes)

Eastern Dwarf Sedge Frog (found by Bradman Fox in Sydney Park, St Peters)

Common Eastern Froglet (found by Angus Edmundson in Woolwich backyard)

Faith Matters

As part of Lent and in the lead up to the Easter weekend, we’ll take a look at some of the Seven Last Words of Christ, and their significance for us today.

“Today you will be with me in Paradise.”

The scene is a familiar one to many of us. Jesus, along with two criminals, is being crucified in the Roman custom on a hill outside Jerusalem.

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!”

40 But the other criminal told the first one off, “Don’t you fear God? Aren’t you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn’t do anything wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into power!”

43 Jesus replied, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.”

Luke 23:39-43

Jesus’ response to the second criminal might conjure up a number of reactions from us. Do we find it surprising? Wonderful? Perhaps unfair? If this man really was a criminal, Jesus’ promise to him seems not quite right to me. My reaction is that it’s not quite fair. His many sins were forgiven in an instant, and he was immediately welcomed into God’s Kingdom.

I wonder, when I react like this, if maybe instead of looking down on this man, I should put myself in his shoes. Even if the ‘crimes’ I’ve committed might be only a lie here, or a bit of greed there; I wonder if I would turn to Jesus and say, ‘remember me’. As we look at Jesus on the cross this Easter, perhaps it’s our chance to turn to him and acknowledge our shortcomings, and to put ourselves in this scene.

I think that for any who turn to him, Jesus has the same welcome; the same promise. Today you will be with me. And he will!
