Tournament of Minds

On Sunday 25th August, 14 students from Wyvern competed in the Sydney East region of the Tournament of Minds problem solving competition. The teams were registered in the Social Sciences and Maths Engineering categories and were faced with two extremely complex challenges. Boys received their challenges on the first day of Term 3 and had six weeks to write a complex script that was to be presented in a 10 minute dramatic performance that included song, verse, costuming and props. The Maths Engineering team were also required to construct a device that would make a sound at two specified times, which is currently on display at Wyvern. The boys needed to work collaboratively and make links to their prior knowledge in order to present a creatively unique response. This divergent thinking was also essential when they completed a spontaneous challenge on competition day.

The boys worked tirelessly during training and throughout the challenge for two terms, both during school and after hours. They are to be commended on their sensational performances on the day in both the Long-Term and Spontaneous challenges. I can proudly report that both teams received ‘Tournament Honours’ on the day in their respective disciplines. We wish to extend our congratulations to all the boys for both their dedication and resilience, especially when things did not always go as planned.
