On Tuesday, 10 Wyvern students competed at the MILO Cup Cricket regional finals held at Gannons Park in Peakhurst. On a fantastically warm late August day, the boys were keen to do well and progress to the State finals. The first match against St Joseph’s Riverwood saw a convincing 92 – 63 victory with Ben Leung and Tim Pritchard the main scorers. Pritchard also took wickets with Patrick Fitzgerald making the run scoring difficult with wickets of his own.
The second game was against a strong CBHS Lewisham team. Wyvern once again prevailed winning 75 – 60 in a tight contest. Tom Marches and Ned Barnett-Hepples were the run scorers with Sam Churchin and Lewis Barnes limiting the Lewisham batsmen with precise bowling. The 3rd pool match saw Wyvern meet Clovelly PS needing a win to progress undefeated to the finals. This match saw a great batting display from Aaron Hawkes, Ben Leung and Tim Pritchard amassing a total of 90 from 8 overs. Henry Cain bowled exceptionally well helping restrict Clovelly to the small total of 39.
After the 3 wins from 3 pool games Wyvern impressively qualified for a final against South Coogee, with the winner progressing to the State Finals to be at Blacktown International Sportspark, next Term. Wyvern took to the field with Leung, Barnett-Hepples, Churchin and Marchese amongst the wicket takers. The Wyvern bowlers destroyed the South Coogee top order, eventually bowling them out within 8 overs for a total of 44. The Wyvern team took to the batting crease with positive vibes after such a great bowling performance. These were quickly shaken with captain Ben Leung dismissed along with Pritchard in the 1st over. Wickets continued to tumble with Wyvern in a dire position still requiring 30 runs with only 2 wickets in hand. Another wicket and it looked like the dream of the State finals was all over for Wyvern. Marc Mardini was the last batsmen standing in the way of a South Coogee triumph. With a further 9 runs required off the last over Mardini showed immense skill and poise to surpass South Coogee’s total with a few balls to spare. Marc’s teammates ran to congratulate him on the “great escape” and to shake hands with the valiant opponents. I would like to congratulate the boys on their victory and for the humility and sportsmanship they displayed during the tightly contested final.

On Sunday 25th August, 14 students from Wyvern competed in the Sydney East region of the Tournament of Minds problem solving competition. The teams were registered in the Social Sciences and Maths Engineering categories and were faced with two extremely complex challenges. Boys received their challenges on the first day of Term 3 and had six weeks to write a complex script that was to be presented in a 10 minute dramatic performance that included song, verse, costuming and props. The Maths Engineering team were also required to construct a device that would make a sound at two specified times, which is currently on display at Wyvern. The boys needed to work collaboratively and make links to their prior knowledge in order to present a creatively unique response. This divergent thinking was also essential when they completed a spontaneous challenge on competition day.
The boys worked tirelessly during training and throughout the challenge for two terms, both during school and after hours. They are to be commended on their sensational performances on the day in both the Long-Term and Spontaneous challenges. I can proudly report that both teams received ‘Tournament Honours’ on the day in their respective disciplines. We wish to extend our congratulations to all the boys for both their dedication and resilience, especially when things did not always go as planned.

Over 2.2 million people have asthma in Australia.
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Asthma causes the muscles in the airways to tighten making them narrower. The lining of the airways becomes swollen and inflamed causing it to produce sticky mucus. That is why sometimes you need a reliever such as Ventolin to open the airways and ease the bronchospasm, but you may also need an anti-inflammatory medication (preventer) such as Flixotide or a short course of oral steroids to treat the inflammation. Some medications are a combination of both of these.
Dust, pollen, smoke, respiratory infections, exercise, stress, emotional factors, changes in weather temperature and certain medicines such as aspirin. There is a strong link between asthma and allergy.
Your doctor can diagnose asthma from the history, clinical examination and response to a reliever medication. It is based on a recurrent or persistent wheeze with no other obvious cause. Older children and adults will complete spirometry or lung function tests. If the child has eczema or a close relative has asthma, this helps to make the diagnosis one of asthma.
A blue reliever inhaler such as Ventolin or Asmol is prescribed and should be carried by the person at all times. These hold approximately 200 puffs of medication. Treatment with a preventer medication is recommended for patients who have asthma symptoms more than three times a week.
Don’t get used to poor asthma control. Regularly waking from asthma symptoms or using your reliever medication more than 2–3 times a week (except before exercise) should not be a ‘normal’ part of having asthma. When you feel wheezy or short of breath it is important to use a spacer with your inhaler so that most of the medication goes to your lungs and not to your mouth.
These written plans developed with your Doctor help you recognise if your asthma is getting worse and tell you what to do in response. They are also useful for schools/camps/excursions/tours and other carers. Click on the link below to see an action plan.

We encourage all students with asthma to carry their blue reliever puffer with them.
Some asthmatics are sensitive to aerosols so please remind your son to use theirs in a well-ventilated area away from others. Wyvern Staff cover asthma first aid in their first aid courses and are having formal group training again through the Asthma Foundation in September.
The Asthma Foundation has excellent fact sheets and videos if you would like more general information.
At half time in the Bledisloe Cup match last Saturday night 17 August, players from the Sydney University Football Club and Newington College — both celebrating their Sesquicentenaries this year — performed a re-enactment of their first rugby match together more than 140 years ago.
That original match was important not only for Newington’s history — it was the first recorded rugby match played by a Newington team — but for the history of rugby in Australia: it was ‘the first football match which has been played by a regular school team’, as our historical source for it notes.
Our source is an article in the June 1902 issue of The Newingtonian, which quotes at length from a newspaper cutting about a match to take place ‘this afternoon between the University football team and the Newington College Club, on the grounds of the latter.’ The cutting was undated, but the article’s author consulted William Horner Fletcher, an Old Boy and son of the College’s second President, Rev Joseph Horner Fletcher. He had played in the match and confirmed that it had taken place 33 or 34 years earlier. Most likely this was 1869.
The article also notes: ‘For some time previously Newington had been playing the Melbourne game (or a variation of it), introduced to the School by the then Head Master, Mr Metcalfe, who came from Victoria. However, a change to Rugby rules was decided upon, and the match against the Unis. was the first played thereunder.’ Metcalfe left Newington early in 1869 and it is likely that the policy change from Australian Rules to rugby took place soon after.
The Newingtonian reported that the Newington boys ‘had not thoroughly mastered the Rugby method of play, and, being hampered by their knowledge of the Melbourne game, they lost the match.’ Rugby rules were still evolving at this time. The match was played ‘according to the rules of the University FC’, with twenty players per side, a round ball and other features unfamiliar today.

How can you help.?????? Glad you asked, come along and enjoy the following:
We have organised everything so all we need is your time. Please come along and volunteer for 1-2 hours throughout the day to help Nicole from CAST in all the sections. Tomorrow morning rise and shine for Breakfast with the Stars of all your sporting codes. Father’s Day Breakfast commences at 7:30am in the playground. The Breakfast is open to all Fathers and Grandfathers of Wyvern boys and is always fun. Thank you to the Year 2 class group that have worked very hard to ensure that everyone will be catered for.
What a fabulous weekend for the boys from K-2. The sun was shining, the water was clear and inviting and there was plenty of fun to be had by all the boys and the dads. A huge thanks goes to Costa Mina who was appointed Volunteer Camp Coordinator.
All the boys were well behaved and we look forward to launching it again next year bigger and better than ever.
Due to popular demand, the camp is now SOLD OUT. The camp has attracted bookings from 180 families, a huge increase from last year, and the volunteer organisers are currently working to allocate sites for everyone. Due to limited space on Cockatoo Island, we are not able to accept any more bookings. Camp convenors will contact all parents that have booked for the camp over the next week. It’s a Halloween Theme so be scared, be very scared…
Swimming towels are back…. the first week of term 4 will be the start of the swimming program for 5 weeks. Boys are required to bring
Orders can be paid online or via the attached form to be delivered to the front office. Towels will be available last week of Term 3.

Currently over 30 boys each day are required to crowd a dangerous bus shelter shared with the general public, and close to a very busy Victoria Road in peak hour. A parent group is seeking that this be rectified by simply changing where the bus stops. This decision may only be made by the NSW State Government and a petition of 500 signatures would really assist. The P&F are supportive of removing our boys from this bus stop each day and ask you to also show your support for the boys by signing the online petition and leaving a comment: http://chn.ge/18J54Mk. You don’t need to use the bus to sign the petition. See the attached or contact phyllispeterson@optusnet.com.au for your more information. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Any comments or suggestion to help assist with the school are certainly welcome. Drop me an email, my computer is always running.
We are also looking for a position of assistant Uniform Shop Convenor. We need a volunteer to cover 2 afternoons or 2 mornings to keep the quality of customer service to the parents maintained. It’s not a big commitment to help your son’s school.
If you are interested, please email me directly. It is a great position to be able to assist the school and students and its fun, not hard work.

John Walker writes: “We manage, waste, spend and save time. We wish it would come…we wish it would pass…we see it fly and we feel it drag. We watch clocks and carry calendars, creating the illusion that somehow we control it. God controls time….Do you think He was surprised that while Mary and Joseph were dejectedly wandering the street of Bethlehem, the time came for the baby to be born? We’re surprised by unexpected developments…God’s never surprised, even by the most disastrous turn of events.
“How would your faith be if you knew God wasn’t surprised by your circumstances and is working towards a holy and healthy conclusion? George Mueller once waited on the dock for a special chair to be delivered because he had a bad back and needed it for his ocean voyage. When departure time came and it still hadn’t arrived his friends offered to buy him one, but Mueller said, ‘Either God will provide…or…give me grace to do without.’ Then, just like a Hollywood ending…the chair arrived…right on time! How would you act, think, and live differently if you were absolutely certain God was at the end of your deadline…even if there were only seconds left? The Bible says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever”. Time doesn’t diminish His love or His power to work within your life. He was there in the past, He’s here now, and He will be there in your future.

Planning for Back to Newington Day is well underway and, in our 150th Anniversary Year, we will be delighted to welcome back many familiar faces to build a huge crowd of support for the boys during their sport on the day. This year we very warmly welcome the communities of Shore (S.C.E.G.S.), The Scots College and The Armidale School (T.A.S) at our Stanmore Secondary Campus.
The Alumni Year of 1963 will also be joining us on the day for a very special reunion, as “the boys” were the leaders of the College in the Centenary year. A number of our guests were members of the 2nd XV at the time and have asked, in particular, to meet up with their team counterparts after their game. The MOONS luncheon has been well subscribed and both recent and longstanding “mother” members will be here to catch up on family news since last year.
Community celebrations and anniversaries have been a long-standing tradition of Newington College. This year we look back, and using the Black and White Cookbook, our stallholders will recreate the recipes and traditions of Newington families passed from generation to generation. The kitchens have also been busy with Support Group and Association stallholders preparing international lunch menus, ‘Black and White Label’ home made jams, relishes and chutneys, and cakes, biscuits and sweet treats – and our advice is to be early to collect these “sell out” items.
A huge number of Market Stalls are listed in the program to fill Centenary Hall Market Place including Delightfully Turkish, Bizzibeeds, Maya Neumann Hats, Passion for Pearls, Flowers for Everyone and Aunty Ems Jewellery to name a few. An online Silent Auction will also be displayed on the screens in Centenary Hall for you to follow your bids throughout the day, with a closing time of 2:30 pm.
So join us with your whole family for our biggest home day celebration of the year.

How can you help? Wyvern House is running the Children’s Activity area so you can bring along the whole family. We need volunteers to assist to make the day fun for everyone.
What talent do you need? No talent required! It’s about being part of a great day and supporting the Newington community. Come along with a friend and double the fun.

Last week Wyvern students enjoyed a very successful Book Week. All students from K to Year 6 had opportunities to be inspired by visiting authors, to be involved in exciting activities and to visit our comprehensive Book Fair in the Library. I thank Mrs Joanne Barnes for her great work in preparing such a stimulating and enjoyable program.
The process for allocating students to next year’s classes is thorough and starts in Term 4. As part of this process some parents may feel that they can assist by offering additional information about their son. Should you wish to express a view about the style of classroom management you feel may best your son (e.g. particularly nurturing or greater structure, etc.) I invite you to contact me via email before the end of this term. Please note that I cannot consider requests submitted later than this deadline.
Requests for particular teachers or for a teacher based on his or her gender will not be considered in this process. Whilst we do welcome parental input in the process, the school has the final say in decisions regarding class placement for 2014.
Mr Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
