On Tuesday 25^th February, the students in Year 4 enjoyed the exciting opportunity to take their learning to the Royal Botanic Gardens. In class, the boys had been inquiring into the significance of Australia’s environment, the different perspectives held about it by people over time, and how and why we should protect it.

A tour of the carnivorous plants exhibition and activities allowed the boys to explore the processes of pollination and life cycles of plants – culminating in planting their own seeds – and served to tune their thinking in to plants, their purpose and the gardens themselves.

The experience then led the students to learn from knowledgeable guides as they walked through the Cadi Jam Ora, hearing stories about the traditional and contemporary uses of native plants by Aboriginal people. Further examination of plants allowed us to discover how they were used by original custodians for food, medicine, shelter, tools and weapons.

The excursion was a fantastic way to elevate our learning in class and provided the basis for rich discussion, with tangible examples, when we returned to school. Well done to the boys on their inquisitive approach to this learning opportunity and their exemplary conduct throughout. Thank you to all the parents who offered to come along and assist us on the day.
