A Message from Mr Holden

On Thursday 13 September at 6:30pm, the Wyvern P & F are generously sponsoring an important event for all parents of boys in Kindergarten to Year 6. The theme of the evening is “Raising Boys in a Digital World”, to be presented by Dr Kristy Goodwin.

Many families face challenges in assisting their children to manage the use of devices such as iPhones, iPads, etc. The reality is that our boys are growing up in a time where the use of technology is the norm, but there is growing evidence that a “digitalised childhood” has implications on their health, learning and development. In the upcoming parent seminar, Dr Goodwin will dispel some of the misinformation that surrounds this area and will arm parents with facts, not fears, about how technology is shaping childhood. Kristy will explain how your sons’ basic developmental needs are being shaped by growing up in a digital world and the essential components that children really need to thrive both online and offline.

Dr Kristy Goodwin is one of Australia’s leading digital parenting experts. She is the author of a book ‘Raising Your Child in a Digital World’, a speaker, researcher and media commentator and has over 14 years of experience in teaching and research. In 2007 she was awarded an Australian Postgraduate Scholarship for her doctoral studies at Macquarie University where she completed a PhD on the impact of digital technologies on young children’s learning. Dr Goodwin has worked with various multimedia companies, guiding the development of appropriate and educational programs to support young children’s learning and development, and is a regular speaker at schools throughout Australia.

I encourage you to attend this important workshop; please RSVP for this event at wyvern@newington.nsw.edu.au

Artist of the Week

Years 3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 5 completed their Venetian masks that they started for Shakespeare Week. The boys designed and made different styles of Venetian masks. Forms, such as paper mache, ‘magiclay’ and a layering painting technique were involved. The finished work is very spectacular.

Congratulations to Aart Lilley and Anthony Gregoire for their amazing masks.

Year 6 also completed their swords for Shakespeare week, using similar techniques to the masks. Boys were given a lot of choice within their pommel and hilt designs. Congratulation to Destyn Diep and William Kah for their beautiful and well executed swords.

Faith Matters

Love: It’s a Choice

‘… Love your neighbour as yourself. No other commandment is greater…’ Mark 12:31

We all know someone who might be hard to love… they say the rudest things to rile us up or make us feel small or are just a bit nasty. Even so, we’re called to love them. Jesus was very clear on that. Now, there will always be people we don’t get along with, people we don’t like or find difficult to be around. We’re supposed to love them anyway. We don’t have to bring them gifts every day, but God does want us to treat them with respect.

What would happen if you took the time to find out and focus on their good qualities?

Love is more than an emotion; it’s an active (not always easy) choice to treat someone well because you know God and His love has been given to you. The Bible says that God is love and, if you ask Him, He’ll teach you how to love them like he does.

Here’s a challenge: make a list of your most-difficult-person’s five best qualities, however hard that is, and however long it takes. Maybe you could then share one of those five things with them.
