A Message from Mr Holden

It has been good to have had two reasonably normal but busy weeks, as the boys returned to school this term. Years 3-6 students participated in a very successful Newington Prep Schools’ Athletics Carnival last Wednesday where many boys excelled in various events and it was wonderful to have the combined Lindfield and Wyvern campus join together for this annual event. We also started our shortened winter sport season on Saturday and again it was very good to have our boys in Years 3-6 participate with much enthusiasm in their fixtures. My thanks to all parents for paying close attention to the COVID-19 Sport Protocols for Parents that are currently in place, click here

We are carefully monitoring the current status of COVID-19 in NSW and will continue to be vigilant with our hygiene and safety protocols. However, given that in recent days the number of COVID hotspots seems to be expanding in Sydney, we do need to be prepared for the possibility of a positive case at Wyvern in the coming weeks. If we receive notification during the day that a student or staff member has tested positive for COVID-19, we will need to close the school and require parents to pick up their sons as per NSW Health guidelines. We have detailed plans for a controlled school closedown that will enable boys to be picked up by parents in a safe and organised manner. Should we need to action this plan, you will receive a text message from the College directing you to an email from me, which will provide detailed information about where to pick up your son. In general, the email will ask you to pick up your son/s from different locations dependent on his year group. They are:

  • Years K-2: Cambridge Street Play Area,
  • Years 3-4: Wyvern Carpark
  • Years 5-6: Senior School, Stanmore Road
  • Please note, older siblings will move to their youngest sibling’s class and will stay with them in their year group location for pick up.

Rather than provide all details now, can I please ask you to read that email carefully should we need to implement a daytime closure.

From time to time the College updates it’s Conditions of Enrolment. A copy of the latest version is available here. Please note that the new conditions apply to all existing families from Term 1 2021.

Finally, thank you for your assistance with the recent parent teacher interviews which were held via video conferencing. The different arrangement certainly had some major benefits for busy families, and I hope they were productive and useful for you.

Important Message from our School Nurse

Dear Newington families,

There is a lot of information available about COVID-19 and how to best manage its contagion. The College will continue to be guided by the NSW Government, which is providing regular updates here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19. While we will work under this umbrella, there might be times when the advice we provide to individual families, or the school overall, moves outside these general guidelines based on a case-by-case assessment. We regularly consult with the Public Health Unit and act on its recommendations regarding testing and self-isolation.

As a topline guide, everyone tested must self-isolate until they get their results. If they are identified as a close contact of a positive case, they must continue self-isolating for 14 days regardless of results. (Information about contact status will be provided direct by the Public Health Unit.)

We now also encourage boys and staff to wear masks on public transport and public places. More information about the value of masks can be found here https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/face-masks. We continue to ask our community to practise physical distancing.

Again, we ask that anyone with even mild symptoms to stay home and get tested. To safeguard the health of the whole community, boys must be symptom free before they return to school.
