Kitchen Garden

In the busy lives we all lead it’s nice to be able to take time to tend to simple things like plants and watch them grow. The Kitchen Garden has been a lovely resource for lots of boys this year.  There are some budding green thumbs at Wyvern with boys taking real ownership in the Garden and enjoying cooking, eating and taking home produce.  We’ve grown everything from pumpkins to peas, beans, lettuces, asparagus, radishes, corn, tomatoes, eggplant, Brussels sprouts, onions, carrots, cucumbers, rhubarb, strawberries, citrus fruits and a variety of herbs.

The boys are given jobs including removing spent plants, turning soil, planting seeds and seedlings, staking plants, weeding, feeding our worms, fertilizing, mulching and watering, though the absolute favourite of course is harvesting!  We’ve had cook ups using garden produce and the boys all sit around the frypan taking turns moving things around the pan (imagine that at home) and then eat what they’ve grown (yes, even the green bits).  They even clean up afterwards!  The support of dedicated teachers like Mrs Bradford and Mr Pollard has been the key to its success.

Kitchen Garden meets every second Friday at lunch time and we need a few parent volunteers to help make 2013 another bountiful year.  You don’t need any particular gardening knowledge, just a desire to work with the boys and enjoy 45 minutes in the outdoors.  The enthusiasm and positivity of the boys is fantastic and you can be part of helping this great resource evolve.   If you would like to get involved or know more, phone Nicole Hawick on 0418 652 233.

Newington 12th Annual Film Festival

The 12th Annual Newington College Film Festival will be held on Wednesday 28 November 2012 at 7.00pm in Centenary Hall. Come along to watch the culmination of many hours of hard work for our budding young Tarantinos, Scorceses and DiCaprios—tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students in a night that is sure to leave many thinking they’ve been magically transported to Cannes. There is a sausage sizzle before the event starting at 6.15pm. Watch the trailer below to whet your appetites for what has become one of the most entertaining evenings on the Newington Calendar!

P&F News and Events

Two more days until the 2012 Wyvern Christmas Party then 12 more days until school 2012 is completed.

As the countdown begins to the Annual Wyvern Christmas Party and we are all looking for something “colourful” to wear you start to realise that party season is in full swing. I would like to thank all the Kindy parents involved in the organisation and preparation of the Christmas Function – Kathy Burshtein, Camilla Wayland, Telma Baal, Paola McLeod, Karen Saupin and Emma Cope (Year 1). Organising an event like this is a huge task but hopefully has drawn the Kindy 2012 group closer together.

Due to finalisations of exams in Centenary Hall, Wyvern Christmas Party will take place in WYVERN HALL.

The raffle will be drawn on the night and the winners will be notified. There will be some great silent auction items such as a holiday house for a week and vouchers to an exciting new online fashion website called DressMe. The parents of Wyvern have donated these items and others such as beautiful wine, children’s toys and beauty vouchers. Huge thanks go out to them. Kick up your heels and have a dance with me.

SCHOOL FEES RAFFLE

On the 17th November at the Seafood Night held at the Newington Boatshed, the Headmaster Dr Mulford drew the lucky winners of our School fees Raffle. The major prize winners were the Dive Family who will have a boy in year 12 next year. The  four runners up who won vouchers to the Uniform Shop were Shane Sullivan, John Hartill, Margaret Leibowitz and Sascha Wooding. Congratulations to all the winners. We would also like to acknowledge all those that purchased tickets and thank you for your participation. The raffle was a great success and the funds raised are a wonderful boost to our fund-raising program, significantly exceeding our expectations.

POSITION AVAILABLE

We are still in need of a Uniform Shop Convenor. This position is a fabulous position to hold as it has all the social aspects and not a lot of responsibility!! If you’re willing to take on the position you will find it fun and exciting. Please contact Julie Gigg via email djgigg@gmail.com to discuss further. We are offering a 50% discount on school uniforms to the Convenor for their commitment to the shop. The position would require you to work one day per week in the shop – that really is only 2 hours a week and some help when pre-planning for the year.

Wyvern Faith Matters

Time

John Walker writes: “We manage, waste, spend and save time. We wish it would come…we wish it would pass…we see it fly and we feel it drag. We watch clocks and carry calendars, creating the illusion that somehow we control it. God controls time….Do you think He was surprised that while Mary and Joseph were dejectedly wandering the street of Bethlehem, the time came for the baby to be born?  We’re surprised by unexpected developments…God’s never surprised, even by the most disastrous turn of events.

“How would your faith be if you knew God wasn’t surprised by your circumstances and is working towards a holy and healthy conclusion? George Mueller once waited on the dock for a special chair to be delivered because he had a bad back and needed it for his ocean voyage. When departure time came and it still hadn’t arrived his friends offered to buy him one, but Mueller said, ‘Either God will provide…or…give me grace to do without.’ Then, just like a Hollywood ending…the chair arrived…right on time! How would you act, think, and live differently if you were absolutely certain God was at the end of your deadline…even if there were only seconds left? The Bible says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever”. Time doesn’t diminish His love or His power to work within your life. He was there in the past, He’s here now, and He will be there in your future. This Christmas why not take some time to acknowledge that He is interested in you all the time.

The Salvation Army Christmas Tree

Please support the Salvation Army in their efforts to ensure that needy families receive gifts at Christmas Time.

Wyvern’s SRC Year 2 students helped decorate the sparkling, colourful Christmas tree in Wyvern foyer. Each year we ask Wyvern families to support this cause by donating a gift to a needy family.  All gifts should be visible and wrapped in clear cellophane paper and labelled either boy/girl and for what age group. This allows for easy identification. Gifts should be left under the Christmas Tree. In the past, our students have taken pride in giving to those who are less fortunate. The Salvation Army will hand these gifts our to needy families so that they too can celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day. Please give generously so that these families feel special.

From the SRC.

Movember Update

There is not long to go in the year, which means it is not long to go for some very hairy teachers! The end of Movember is fast approaching and the Mo Bro’s and Sista’s would like to thank all of you for your support so far. If you would still like to donate please visit the Wyvern Mo Bro’s home page on:

http://au.movember.com/team/704113

You can also donate at the front office or to your class teacher. We have already raised over $1000, so a big thank you and congratulations to all supporters.

Students can be part of the fun too! On Friday the 30th of November, for a gold coin donation, they may wear a Christmas themed hat, socks or tie and a ‘mo’ for the ‘Mo Ho Ho’ day. Students may bring a ‘stick on mo’ from home, or have one painted on by teachers before school in playground A and B from 8.00am.

Please see your SRC representative or Mr Brayley for more information.

School Fees 2013 – Last Chance to Set Up Automated Payments

In an effort to assist you to pay the school fees in 2013, I wish to remind you of the ability to pay fees via nine automated monthly instalment payments.

If you haven’t already done so, and you wish to smooth and spread the school fee payments over most of the year, you can opt to pay the school fees automatically.

Many families use this payment method as it is the most convenient way to pay the fees.

If you have previously provided the College with an Authority, we will bill you in nine instalments in 2013.

If you have not already provided the College with an Authority, there is one last opportunity to still do so … before Monday, 3 December 2012.

Simply complete and return either the “Credit Card Authority” or the “Direct Debit Request”. All those who have already done so will continue on this plan in 2013

It is important to note that, once the 2013 billing system has been set up, we cannot switch your billing and payment pattern.

Prize Giving

This year’s Annual Wyvern Prize Giving for students in Years 3 -6 will take place in Centenary Hall on Thursday 6 December at 9:00am. Students are asked to meet their class teachers at the Senior School in the area outside the Music Center next to Centenary Hall no later than 8:30am wearing their summer uniform minus black cap. I am sorry that due to the building work at the Senior School we will not be able to host our normal morning tea this year; I do apologise for this. However, there will be an opportunity for parents to say their farewells to staff after the ceremony in the area outside Centenary Hall.

Whilst we take the opportunity to award a number of prizes for outstanding achievement (categories listed below), Prize Giving is primarily an opportunity for the Wyvern community to mark and celebrate a most positive year.
