This week’s Artist of the Week. Christopher demonstrated skilful use of brown pencil  and chalk pastel in his sketch of a bumblebee. He managed to work like a real artist, beginning with soft ‘lullaby’ or construction lines and completing his work by shading to add form.

From the Archives – John Manton's Letter heralding the beginning of Newington College

On 18 February 1863, Rev. John Manton wrote a letter to Mr A MacArthur, one of two leading Wesleyan churchmen then visiting England. In December 1862 these men had been asked by the Church’s Education Committee to ‘…secure the services of two competent Masters, and send them out with the least possible delay.’

John Manton’s follow-up letter, his copy of which is held in the College Archives, provided MacArthur with news of developments in the last two months.  A contract had been let for £1,050 for repairs at Newington House, not including the fencing that was also needed. He reported rapid progress, with the slating of the main building completed, replacing the previous shingles, and some of the internal work also done. Several friends of the project had visited Newington House and were all ‘…much pleased with the situation and the place itself.’

Fundraising for the work was continuing: he and others, including Rev. William Kelynack, a later President of the College, had secured promises of £690 in the Sydney, Goulburn, Bathurst and Illawarra Districts. Manton hoped to raise ‘a respectable sum’ in Maitland, but noted that it would be ‘…some time before the money can be got, in consequence of the dulness [sic] of the times.’

‘I see nothing in the way to prevent our making a beginning in July next,’ Manton declared, ‘should the Masters arrive by that time, which I sincerely hope may be the case.’ He would soon begin to advertise the opening in July ‘…in full confidence that the Masters will be forthcoming by the time we want them.’  This, however, was clearly his major concern. He urged MacArthur to ‘give the subject your earliest attention, as we should not be able to find suitable persons here.’  In due course this question was to be resolved in an unexpected way.

UNSW Medal for 2012 ICAS Computer Skills

Congratulations to Jonathan Lee who was acknowledged as being amongst the top 1% of participants in NSW in last year’s International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) Computer Skills Competition and was credited with a High Distinction Certificate. As further results emerged Jonathan received fantastic news that he also gained the top score!

A ceremony weld held at the end of last year where Jonathan received a UNSW Medal acknowledging his outstanding achievement.

Look for the Honey

In their book, The Laws of Lifetime Growth, authors Dan Sullivan and Catherine Nomura explain, “Continual learning is essential for lifetime growth. You can have a great deal of experience and be no smarter for all the things you’ve done, seen, and heard. Experience alone is no guarantee of lifetime growth. But if you regularly transform your experiences into new lessons, you’ll make each day of your life a source of growth. The smartest people are those who can transform even the smallest events or situations into breakthroughs in thinking and action. Look at all of life as a school and every experience as a lesson, and your learning will always be greater than your experience.”

In an old Peanuts cartoon, Charles Schulz shows Charlie Brown at the beach building a magnificent sandcastle. It’s a work of art. As he stands back to admire it, suddenly it’s destroyed by a big wave. In the last frame he says, “There must be a lesson here, but for the life of me I don’t know what it is.” That’s how many of us feel after a potentially valuable experience. We go through it but don’t grow. We attend meetings designed to help us learn, then do nothing with what we’ve heard after closing our notebooks.

A few days after slaying a lion, Samson returned to the scene of victory and discovered two things in the carcass: (a) Bees, that sting. (b) Honey, that tastes sweet. “He took some” (Judges 14:9).

In life, move beyond the pain and look for the honey!

ONU GOLF DAY

The ONU invites all members of the Newington Community to the 2013 ONU Golf Day at the prestigious Lakes Golf Course, home of the Australian Open and Australian PGA on Thursday 28 February.

An exceptional day of golf is promised with participation by the Australian Long Drive Champion as well as Australian women’s golf professional Carlie Butler. Lunch and a buffet dinner are also included.

The 2012 ONU Golf Day, attended by Old Boys, College Council members, Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents and others was a great success raising more than $17,000. Proceeds from the 2013 event will again be used to assist any Old Boy (young or old) living with depression by providing counselling and funds for early intervention and specialist treatment. Chess at Wyvern

Chess coaching for all interested boys in Years 3-6 will be held this semester on Tuesdays from 1:00pm – 1:40pm in Mrs Forell’s room (3F – classroom ).  Experienced coaches from the Sydney Academy of Chess provide engaging, tailored lessons to the boys.

Term 1 lessons will commence on 19^th February, 2013 and it is never too late to join!  Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on an interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and a weekly fun tournament with end-of-term prizes.  Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your son is interested in taking part, you can either pick up an enrolment form from the chess notice board, or from Mrs Forell.

Chess Club takes place each Thursday from 1:15pm – 1:40pm in the Library.  It’s a great opportunity for boys to play social games of chess and practise the skills they have learnt on Tuesdays.  There is no charge for the club.

Routine – don’t we love a good rountine

Week 3 is almost complete and most families would have settled into the routine of packing lunches, sport, homework, driving all over Sydney and of course washing. Thank you to all the parents who went along to the swimming carnival on Tuesday to support the boys and the teaching staff to organise a great event. Although hot and noisy for the parents, all the boys enjoyed being a part of their “house” and cheering each other on.

We have many exciting events coming up during 2013 and to kick off the Wyvern Social activities we have the Annual Ladies Dinner on Friday 15^th March to be held at ‘4143 at the James Barnes at Alexandria’. Look out for the invitation coming via email within the next week. Organise your table for your year group and come along and enjoy the night.

On Friday 22^nd March we will host the first of the Sesquicentenary Celebrations with 150^th Years in Sport. To be held at the Dockside restaurant, Darling Harbour. Click here for the invitation.  Seats are selling fast so gather your year group or company for a designated table with silent auction items, lucky balloons, a sports panel and “Dine with a Star” options.

Thursday 21^st February we will be holding our first Wyvern P&F Meeting for 2013 at 7.00pm until 8:30pm. We have invited Julie Woods, a Year 6 parent to do a brief presentation about nutrition and keeping you and your family #1. She will give tips about packing lunch boxes and keeping boys motivated to eat healthy food for sustained energy. Mr Holden will also give a brief update about the strategic plans for Wyvern House moving forward.

FREE CHILD MINDING AND HEALTHY PIZZA WILL BE AVAILABLE – the wonderful Gap Students will be supervising the children on the roof top, feel free to bring siblings.

Save this date and bring your umbrella!!!!! The Great Garden Party will be on again – Friday 5^th April , for an afternoon in the gardens for all the family. Pizza, lemonade, cupcakes, “smash a Jaffa” and sticky wicket  are just to name a few of the activities and food options for the boys (and girls) to enjoy.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Welcome Cocktail Party. Despite the rain, hail and thunderstorms we went ahead with the gathering and over 300 parents enjoyed the function hosted by Wyvern P&F. This was a great opportunity to meet new and current parents in your year group. From feedback from the parents, it was a great function with excellent food. Everyone loves a “slider” so thank you to Laissez-faire Catering for providing such tasty delights for all.

Don’t forget you can purchase your 150^th celebration mementos such as Newington Monopoly, 150^th Cufflinks, books and ties. Order forms are available at the front office and items will be delivered to your son’s class by the following week. There are only a small amount of Monopoly games available so get in fast before you miss out.

With cooler weather ahead, all boys wearing the tracksuit outside of the school must wear the complete set (jacket and pant)s. Tracksuits are available at the Uniform Shop along with all your winter uniforms for Term 2. Winter Uniform includes blazer, woollen shorts and a long sleeve shirt. All boys must wear the winter uniform from Term 2.

Co-curricular Ensembles

All co-curricular ensembles, except Wyvern Jazz and the Year 3 Training Band, commence rehearsals next week (Week 2) at the following times:

If you are interested in your son joining an ensemble, please contact the Music Department to discuss the most appropriate ensemble(s) for his stage of musical development.

Private Tuition

All boys wishing to undertake private tuitition in 2013 need to have submitted a form which can be found at http://insites.newington.nsw.edu.au/instrument

If your son would like to learn an instrument, please contact the music Department to discuss which instrument would be most suitable for him and whether he might like to try a range of instruments before making a decision.

A Message from Mr Holden

At this week’s combined Preparatory Schools’ Swimming Carnival over 450 students from Wyvern House and Lindfield Preparatory Schools competed in a full day of events. On the day it was very pleasing to note the:

• high level of participation by every student
• strong sense of sportsmanship engendered by our excellent House and Vice House Captains
• wonderful parental support
• exemplary conduct by Wyvern students
• outstanding staff team effort

I also noted the high quality of events with many close finishes. The results from the carnival are used to select a combined Newington representative swimming team. Students selected will participate in a number of events against other Independent schools over the next few weeks as well as in Term 4.

The Summer Sport’s season has started with a great deal of purpose and enthusiasm and I am pleased to report that very few training sessions or fixtures have been too adversely affected by the indifferent weather, thanks to the good organisation of our Sports Administrator, Mr Joel Wilson.

In the early stages of the season, there are inevitably some disappointed students about their initial placement into a team. I do admire those boys who rather than complain, roll their sleeves up, work hard and try to prove that the initial selection was wrong. I suspect a boy learns far more about his own character in these situations. I also thank parents for your positive messages of support for your sons as well as for maintaining a balanced perspective on primary school sporting matters.

Of course, we are striving to make further improvements to our sport provision at Wyvern and in this regard we do welcome parent feedback. As such do feel free to contact our various Directors for each sport should you have any questions or comments about technical aims and objectives of their particular programs (names and contact details set out below).

As part of our student leadership structure all Year 6 students took part in a recent ‘Leadership’ training day at the senior school campus. Following this, many Year 6 students applied to become Year 6 Monitors for various areas; for example, Art, ICT, Library, Chapel, K-2 playground etc. I have been most impressed by the thoughtful applications, as well as, the students’ desire to give back to the school community in their final primary year.
