Transport Buses

Transport

There have been quite a few calls over the last few weeks regarding overcrowding on the morning Eastern Suburbs and 560 bus from Hunters Hill. The service providers and the school have been closely monitoring both services and working on solutions to address these issues.

Eastern Suburbs Bus

The College will be leasing a larger bus for the Eastern Suburbs run for the “problem days” of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hunters Hill 560

There have been a number of boys being refused entry on to the STA government bus 560 route at Drummoyne due to overcrowding. This occurs mainly on Mondays and Fridays.

The overcrowding occurs at Drummoyne, so having a second government bus originate at Rozelle has not alleviated the situation. Newington has requested that State Transit send two buses from Ryde depot in the morning instead of one from Ryde and one from Leichhardt depot.

Newington College has supplied the STA with the numbers of boys living in the Hunters Hill/Drummoyne area and they are working on a solution.

Congratulations to Ben Gill

Congratulations to Ben Gill on his selection in the IPSHA Basketball team. He will now trial for selection in the CIS Basketball team.

Take a Seat in the Old Boys New Lecture Theatre

Ever thought of ‘taking your own seat’ in the new Old Boys Lecture Theatre?

The Old Boys Lecture Theatre (OBLT) has finally come to life with our current boys occupying its seats for several of their classes. And so to continue in the tradition of naming our rooms and buildings at Newington, we are also naming the seats in the OBLT.

Many members of our Newington family have “named” a seat (117 out of the 250 seats have been taken) which will bear their name or another name of their choosing. A gift of $4,000 (tax deductible and may be spread over up to 4 years) will secure a seat in the OBLT thus ensuring your name will forever be etched into Newington’s history.

For more information, please call Lea Greifeneder on 9568 9540 or email development@newington.nsw.edu.au.

History of the Newington Bus

A familiar sight before and after school is the chartered buses that take many of our boys from locations across Sydney to the College and back each day. But how did this start?

On 21 January 1936, a sub-committee of the Finance Committee of the College Council was formed to investigate ‘conveyance of junior boys to and from School’. This issue arose from the closure of Ashfield Grammar Preparatory School and the transfer of thirty of its boys to Newington. The sub-committee recommended against buying a bus but in favour of introducing a charter service. The cost to parents was not to exceed one sixth per boy per week.

On 25 February, the Headmaster, Philip Le Couteur, reported to the Committee that the service was proving a success, with twenty eight boys using it daily. It was costing the College 16/- per day, higher than the original estimate because the route from Ashfield now went via ‘Dobroyde’ (Dobroyd Point). Le Couteur also reported that the bus was taking boys to the rowing shed at Abbotsford, costing a further 10/- per day. He expected the total cost to be £20 until Regatta Day.

In July the Headmaster reported that the bus was being used to transport boys to Long Bay for rifle shooting practice on Mondays, at 12/- per trip. The boys were reported ‘providing their own way home’ from there.

During the Second World War, petrol shortages resulted in the bus being fitted with a large gas bag on its roof. Old Newingtonian Don Dwyer (ON ’49) recalls that the bag was sometimes torn by overhanging shop awnings, with the result that the gas escaped and the boys did not get to school until morning break.

Our illustration shows a later bus, loaded with racing boats and filled with boys about to depart for the 1951 Head of the River (From the collection of Barrie Titcume (ON ’51).

Obedience from Love

Paul the apostle says, “God … is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Most of us don’t connect obedience with pleasure. We’re used to obeying out of necessity or fear. Perhaps we had parents who made us obey ‘just because I said so’. Now it’s not wrong for parents to expect obedience from children, or bosses to expect cooperation from their employees. But it’s not the best definition or the highest motivation for obedience. The element that’s missing is the ‘want to’ factor that God built into each of us, but is buried deep beneath selfishness and forgetfulness. This takes the ‘ought to, have to, better do it or else God will destroy you’ element out of it. It elevates obeying God to a level of joyful response to all that He’s done for you. Obedience is not something you have to manufacture. It’s something you have to cultivate, then activate, because the desire is already present in you. Anything else is merely outward compliance.
It’s like the boy who misbehaved and was told by his mother to go and sit in the corner. After a few minutes she called to him from the other room, ‘Are you still sitting down?’ He replied, ‘Yeah, I’m sittin’ down on the outside, but I’m standin’ up on the inside’. You could call that obedience, but actually it’s nothing more than outward compliance without the inward response of eager and joyful obedience.

TIME FLIES BY

As we round up the first half of Term 1 it is so easy to slip into routines of packing lunches, driving to sport, work etc. Make sure you take the time to enjoy your family and play a game, like Newington 150th Monopoly…. on sale now!

On Thursday 21st February, over 40 members of the Wyvern Community attended the first P&F Meeting for 2013. The pizza’s were a hit with the children and the Gap Students enjoyed playing games with them on the roof top while the parents were treated to an informative presentation about looking after #1 – YOU. We as parents have a huge influence on our children so reflecting to them healthy habits such as eating a RAINBOW of colour everyday can be fun and healthy. Thank you to Julie Maree Wood who walked us through the’ how and why’ we need to eat a variety of coloured fresh foods. If you would like more details about Julie’s information click here – www.juliemareewood.com.au.

Thank you Julie, for your great insight into looking after #1.

Also at the meeting, Mr Holden gave a brief update about the development and focus for Wyvern in 2013. The P&F have assisted the school with funds towards “quiet area” play equipment for the K-2 playground and Staging stairs for Wyvern Hall. The K-2 readers have also had an additional boost of readers from the funds received from the Christmas Party organised by Kindy 2011.

On the 15th March, Year 4 will host the Women of Wyvern or WoW Dinner at 4143 Alexandria. A great night of catching up with all the Women of Wyvern to discuss all the finer details of lunch making, homework and how to keep the boys’ hair neat!! Entertainment and a glass of sparkling on arrival will be provided as well as a raffle with all funds going to “Room to Read” charity which Newington has nominated to align with for the upcoming Literature Festival. Get your tickets online quickly as this event will be a sell out.

On Friday 22nd March the first official social function for the Sesquicentenary will be held to celebrate 150 years of Sport in Newington. A wonderful panel of celebrities will be part of the days proceedings. We are looking for donations of services or products that could assist you in promoting your business. If you have something to offer please email, djgigg@gmail.com and I will contact you for collection etc. Take the afternoon off work, bring a friend and enjoy lunch with fellow Newingtonians.

Shorty after the Easter break we will be holding The Great Garden Party – Friday 5th April. Each year group has been assigned a stall for the afternoon of fun. Please contact your class parent for details of how you can assist.

In Term 2 all boys are required to wear winter uniform. This consists of grey blazer, long sleeve striped shirt and winter weight shorts. Come down to the Uniform Shop for all of these items prior to the end of end Term 1. The Uniform Shop will not be open during the school holiday break. There are also many other items available such as Newington badges to reward your son in areas that he may have achieved great results or just applied himself well. Badges include rugby, swimming, music, basketball and soccer.

Size 2-8 socks will be available from 4th March. Thanks for your patience.

Don’t forget to order you Sesquicentenary items through the online store or via the order form which when filled will be delivered to the office for collection.

The development of SPACES and on-line ordering for the Tuckshop will be trialled over Term 1. During this process all information will be added to SPACES and included in The Wyvern. From Term 2 we hope to have all the “Cyber bugs” worked out and all parents to be utilising the sites for regular updates about the school.

If you have any feedback, questions, comments about the school or the P&F, please contact myself, my email door is always open.

The next P&F meeting will be held on 16th May at 7.00pm in Wyvern Hall. We are looking for suggestions about topics that may interest the parent body. If you have, ideas or areas, which the P&F should cover, send me your thoughts.

A Message from Mr Holden

As we approach the halfway point of the term I am pleased to see the boys continuing with their excellent settled and hardworking start to the year. Students who joined us at the beginning of term have integrated so well into the Wyvern community and are making the most of a broad range of activities offered here – before, during and after school. I have been so impressed by the fine manners and conduct of all students, an area of school life frequently commented on by our numerous visitors to the school.

At last week’s well attended P and F meeting I outlined our main areas of strategic development for the coming 12 months. These include:

  1. Detailed planning for the implementation of the new English National Curriculum in 2014
  2. Phase 2 of our Wyvern learning framework, “Building Learning Power”
  3. Second year roll out of the Bring Your Own Device (iPad) strategy for Year 5 students, including working with Sydney University on an international  iPad research project
  4. Promoting Newington Spaces as a key communication tool between home and school
  5. Ensuring  full community  awareness and encouraging keen participation of all sesquicentenary  events.

To ensure transparency and good communication I have posted the detailed Wyvern 2013 strategic action plan on Wyvern Spaces.

Finally, I hope the Year 3 students and staff enjoy their school sleepover tonight in the Wyvern Hall. The social benefits of such events are enormous . I thank staff and parents for their support of this event
