Biennale Art Exhibition

It is with great excitement, the Art Department at Wyvern announce the up and coming “Wyvern Biennale”. This exhibition displaying works from Kindy, Year 3 and Year 6 is a first for Wyvern and will be held in the Concordia Gallery, Stanmore Road.

This exhibition includes the traditional Year 6  “Wyvernbald” Portrait Painting competition, as well as entries from students who have decided to exhibit ceramic sculptures instead of paintings.

The exhibition will be opened by Portrait Artist  Murat Uriali, a mature age student at the National Art School. Murat will have 3 works showing at the exhibition.

Students in Kindergarten have been working all year to create interesting pieces based on the face and the human body.

Students in Year 3 will exhibit one piece, either an assemblage, sculpture or painting. These conceptual works challenged the students to think about the idea of abstraction.

The Art Department is kindly requesting volunteer parents from Year 6  to mind  the exhibition at the Gallery from Wednesday 31st July to Monday 5th August, 10.00am – 2.00pm  each day. This would be for 2 hour time slots.

Please email Terry Fotaris on htfotaras@bigpond.com is you can help.

Students from Kindergarten ,Year 3 and Year 6 will be bringing home invitations in their diaries.

Poetry Performance Competition 2013

Over the next few weeks boys will be preparing to take part in the Poetry Performance Competition, now firmly established as one of Wyvern’s major events.  The competition presents an excellent opportunity for all students in the school to refine and demonstrate their public speaking skills.  All boys will enter the competition and are expected to select a poem, learn it off by heart and then perform it in front of the class.  Finalists will be selected from each class.  Year level finals will then be held to decide the top three places in each year group.

Class teachers will assist their students with the selection of poems.  In addition, Mrs Barnes in the library will have the school’s poetry collection on hand to assist in this process.  Boys may also bring in poems from home.  Each boy is expected to retain a copy of his poem, as well as provide a copy for his class teacher for approval by the end of week 3.  All poems should be published work by recognised authors.

As a guideline, poems should be of approximately the following lengths:

Kindy – between 4 – 6 simple lines (not nursery rhymes)

Year 1 – between 6 – 10 simple lines

Year 2 – between 8 – 12 lines

Years 3 & 4 – between 10 -20 lines

Years 5 & 6 – between 18 – 30 lines

Class heats will be held in week 5 of this term with four boys from each class being selected to go through to the year level finals to be held in week 6.  There will be a Poetry Performance Competition Award Ceremony on Friday 30 August at 2pm. At this time the 1st place winners from each year group will perform their poems. We thank the P&F for their kind donation of prizes which will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. All finalists will be presented with Highly Commended certificates.

The following guidelines will be used when judging the boys:

Difficulty of poem (not length) -10 points

Voice (use/projection, tone, diction, pace) -10 points

Animation (manner, personality, gestures) – 10 points

Overall presentation and style – 10 points

No costumes may be used, however, the boys are permitted to use a maximum of 1 prop.  Expression, gestures and body language are to be encouraged.

Faith Matters

Winning Gracefully

Winning gracefully can be harder than losing gracefully. When we win we’re tempted by arrogance, power, insensitivity, gloating, and wanting to relive our success long after everyone else is bored by it. Gracious winners always remember what it feels like to lose. They are caught up in something bigger than their own wins and losses.

Abraham Lincoln had the wisdom to place the good of the United States above his own ego, appointing his worst political critic, Edwin Stanton, to run the War Department. Stanton, a brilliant legal mind, could be brusque and condescending. As Frederick Douglass put it, “Politeness was not one of his weaknesses.” Lincoln, on the other hand, was keenly aware of his looks and his uneducated background. (When someone charged him with being two-faced during a campaign, he responded: “If I had two faces, do you think I’d be wearing this one?”) As outgoing attorney general of the losing party, Stanton had belittled Lincoln as ‘the original gorilla.’ How Lincoln treated Stanton is Civil War history.

Lincoln trusted in him, confided in him, leaned on him, depended on him. And Stanton responded with unfailing loyalty and affection. On the morning of April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln died after having been shot the night before at Ford’s Theatre. The most famous words ever spoken after the death of a US president were spoken that morning: “Now he belongs to the ages.” The speaker was Edwin Stanton.

Robert Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, said that after his father died he was visited in his room each morning for two weeks by Stanton who “spent the first ten minutes of his visits weeping without saying a word.”

When nothing else works, showing grace does!

A Message from Mr Holden

A very warm welcome back to Term 3.

This week marked a very special time in the College’s  history. On Tuesday Newington celebrated its 150th Birthday. The main focus of the day was the official opening of the new AJ Rae and LRD centres at the Senior School Campus. On Wednesday students from the school were joined by students from Tupou College in Tonga, with which Newington enjoys a strong partnership, to perform in the Founder’s Concert at Town Hall. Our own Wyvern Choir also performed at this special event. Today we were delighted to host the students from Tupou College for a special chapel at Wyvern.

As we move into the second part of our Sesquicentenary year there will be further events including the 150th Black and White Ball on 14 September. We are encouraging a strong Wyvern presence at this event so please do book your tables if you haven’t done so already.

The Wyvern Biennale Art Show will take place in the Concordia Gallery from 30th July to 8th August with a special opening on Tuesday 30th July at 6.00pm. This year art works from Kindy, Year 3 and Year 6 will be featured. You are most welcome to visit the Art Show throughout this time.

Finally, I welcome some new staff members. Mr Campbell Jensen-Robilliard joins us as our School Counsellor and can be contacted via cjensen-robilliard@newington.nsw.edu.au.  Ms Maria Passaris joins the Year 4 team and can be contacted via mpassaris@newington.nsw.edu.au and Ms Joanna Ryan is teaching in Year 1 to cover Ms Jane Wiseman’s long service leave and can be contacted via jryan3@newington.nsw.edu.au

I wish your sons an enjoyable  and productive Term 3.

Mr Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
