Back to Newington Day – Wyvern Flyer & Parent Helper Roster

Wyvern House is involved – Come along – enjoy the fun – support your sport

Saturday 7th September 2013 marks Back to Newington Day at Newington College Secondary Campus! The day revolves around the school celebrating our 150th Year and congratulating the boys for a fantastic season of sport.

Why do you need to come? Be a part of the day by supporting your School and watching the matches unfold; enjoy the atmosphere of food, fun and free spirit.

What will there be to do on the day? The day is a fun market day with a Dunking machine, Big Slide, Jumping castle, Face Painting, Second-hand Books, beautiful Market Stalls and, of course, plenty of food.

How can you help? Wyvern House is running the Children’s Activity area so you can bring along the whole family. We need volunteers to assist to make the day fun for everyone.

What talent do you need? No talent required! It’s about being part of a great day and supporting the Newington community. Come along with a friend and double the fun.

Musical Performaces

Wyvern have had a busy fortnight of musical performances!

Jazz Band

On Sunday 4th August the Wyvern Jazz band competed at the NSW School Bands Festival. They played incredibly well and are to be congratulated for being awarded silver in the Ed Wilson Primary School Open Big Band Event.

Concerto Competition

On Monday 5th August, three Year 6 boys – Mark Chen, Callum Stewart and Simon Jeon competed in the junior Years 6 – 9 Concerto competition at the Senior School Campus. All played their pieces with great style and musical maturity. Special congratulation s to both Simon and Mark who received highly commended awards for their performances. This is quite an achievement considering they were competing against boys in the senior school.

Strings Factory

Our Strings Factory delighted teachers, students and parents with their performance in the K – 2 Assembly last Friday. For many boys this was their first performance as part of the ensemble and they should be very proud of their achievements.

Congratulations

Congratulation to Simon Jeon of 6M who received three 1st place awards in the 29th Inner West Eisteddfod for piano.

  1. 12 Years and Under – Open
  2. 12 Years and Under – Restrict
  3. Championship 12 Years and Under

Well done Simon on your fantastic achievement.

Wyvern Biennale

On July 30th through to August 6th Wyvern hosted the Wyvern Biennale – the Junior School Art Exhibition at the Concordia Gallery. This was the first time works from  Kindergarten, Year 3 and Year 6 at Wyvern had been exhibited.

Opening evening on Tuesday July 30th was a wonderful night with Year 6 Art Monitors serving food and drink.

Murat Urlali, a student at the National Art School, was kind enough to open the evening and show two of his watercolour portraits.

Year 6 carried on the tradition of the Wyvernbald Portrait and Sculpture Prize, with Finn Walsh taking out ‘Work of the Week’ with his portrait of Norman Reedus, and Thomas Marchese winning the ‘People’s Choice Award’ with his portrait of Mohamed Ali.

Well done to all the boys who exhibited work, it was a great to experience the boy’s work in a gallery setting and to see the progression of learning from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Students will see their work at the next Biennale in two years time.

Kindy Pirate Day

During week 4 Kindy was overrun with Pirates – did you see the skull and cross bones flag flying high?  As part of our Phonemic Awareness Program, Kindy continued the long Wyvern tradition of the annual “Pirate, Peter Pan and Popcorn Day.”

The boys all dressed up as pirates with stripes a plenty and even a few parrots and sea gulls were seen on shoulders.  We listened to pirate stories, did some pirate themed writing and measured our pirate accessories with blocks.  The day was topped off by a popcorn feast whilst watching the most famous Pirate of them all – Peter Pan.

Capts Lewandowski and Brixen wish to thank Mr Holden and Ms Gray for their support on this great day and all the parents for so willingly getting into the spirit and dressing their mini pirates with such style.

Reading Challenges 2013

The official Reading Challenge period ended on Friday August 9th. Congratulations to all the boys who have successfully completed their Reading Challenge(s) this year. You should be extremely pleased that through your planning, organisation, perseverance and sense of independence, you have accomplished your goal.

However, there are still a few boys in each grade who are very close to finishing their challenge. I am happy for them to have a little more time in order for them to receive their certificates. Certificates for all Reading Challenges will be distributed in Term 4.

Once again, I would like to thank all the parents and teachers who encouraged and modelled good reading habits for the boys and assisted with filling in the boys reading logs over the course of the challenge. Your support of this endeavour is very much appreciated.

SRC Adopt a Goat Drive – Spring News

In semester 1, the Wyvern SRC raised money for the poverty stricken African township of Kusape in Malawi. Supporting the humanitarian efforts by Margie Bowen Jones, the students decided to raise money to help create a sustainable goat farm, hence the ‘Adopt a Goat’ drive. This farm will help the villagers improve nutrition by having an affordable and accessible source of food with the farm creating meat, milk and cheese. Furthermore, it creates an income and generates employment for the villagers by selling the skins and food products to other communities.

Pleasingly, the Wyvern community has overwhelmingly got behind the project. Each class took responsibility for their own fundraising, with cake & food stalls, mini-Olympics, raffles, guessing competitions and hat parties all being popular fundraising options. Also, many boys made very generous donations.

We are pleased to announce that at the end of the semester we were able to present Margie Bowen Jones a cheque for $4910.80, a whopping 140 goats! Margie and the SRC would like to congratulate and thank the Wyvern community for their generosity. Margie has already travelled to Malawi and increased the goat herd by 135 goats. We are pleased to support the Kusape village create and maintain this important project.

Faith Matters

In February 2009 there was a book published with the title “It’s Never Too Late To Change Your Mind.” It recognises the real threat of dementia but, based on medical research, says we can take action to work against it. Mental activity in children allows them to discovery what’s possible in our world. Mental activity in adults promotes brain elasticity and can hold off dementia.

At Newington we hope to prepare our students for life-long learning. Hopefully, you too are continuing to discover what is possible as you challenge yourself in new areas. Every five years, knowledge in most major fields doubles. That means if you don’t stay sharp you’ll be left behind.

Repeating the same lessons over and over means you’re not learning enough. Study those who’ve succeeded where you want to succeed in order to know what to do – and what not to do. Admiral Hyman Rickover said, “Learn from the mistakes of others; you’ll never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

Whilst, knowledge is helpful in life, the Bible suggests that what we need is something more. What we need is wisdom. Our College motto is … to faith add knowledge … (IN FIDE SCIENTIAM). Knowledge and faith combined can lead us to wisdom. Pursuing wisdom helps us to be the best we can be.

Bayrun 2013

After a successful time at the 2013 Balmoral Burn, Wyvern entered a team in the 2013 Bayrun on Sunday 4th of August. The boys were very excited for the chance to represent Wyvern by running in a growing community event such as the Bayrun. The team did extremely well and finished in the quickest time winning a trophy and a prize of $300. The team included Nicholas Agiotis, Joshua Macdessi, Bililign Robertson, Francois Canter, Kieran Corcoran,  Marc Mardini, Luke Canter, Conor Corcoran, Luca Vasiliou, Gilbert Hogg, Oscar Hogg and Alexander Mouhtouris.

Special mention goes to these members finishing in the top 20 primary boys division:

  • Joshua Macdessi – 2nd overall
  • Bililign Robertson – 3rd overall
  • Marc Mardini – 6th overall
  • Kieran Cordoran – 7th overall
  • Luca Vasiliou – 15th overall

Celebrating our Centenary

Fifty years ago, Newington College celebrated its Centenary. Like this year’s Sesquicentenary, our Centenary celebrations were the result of years of planning and culminated in a series of events around the anniversary of the College’s establishment in July.

‘Centenary Week’ extended over ten days and started with the Old Newingtonians’ Union’s Wyvern Centenary Ball, attended by 1,200 people at the Trocadero on George Street and featuring the presentation of twelve debutantes to the Governor of New South Wales. The next day was Old Boys’ Day (today’s Back to Newington Day), which was moved from its usual September date to be part of Centenary Week.

A particular highlight was the ‘Pilgrimage to Old Newington’, in which four hundred people visited Newington House, the College’s first home and, in 1963, part of the Newington State Hospital. The excursion was organised by the late Dr John Moulton (ON’ 47), great-grandson of the College’s first Head Master, while a memorial plaque was unveiled by Rev Dr David Manton (ON ’53), great-grandson of our founding President.

An Open Day included displays of students’ work and of gymnastics, presentations by a range of student clubs, and a display of archives and historical objects. The day finished with afternoon tea, in which an immense, multi-tiered cake, donated by the Bowes family, was submitted to ‘the ravages of hungry appetites’, as The Newingtonian reported.

The culmination of Centenary Week was the opening of the Centenary Hall by Sir Owen Dixon, Chief Justice of the High Court, attended by some 2,300 people. This included a Dedication Service, in which the assembled Newington community rose and formally presented the Hall to the President of the College Council, who accepted it on behalf of the College.

The first event held in the Centenary Hall after its opening was a Thanksgiving Service marking the end of the main celebrations. Other events included the ONU Centenary Dinner, a commemorative luncheon hosted by the Council, and a Centenary Banquet in a marquee on the Johnson Oval. In the following months, there were a ‘Centenary Musicale’ in the new Hall, a reception for the staff, a Ceremonial Parade and presentation of flags to the Cadet and Air Training Corps, and a Centenary Festival of Music, Drama and Art.

The College’s connection with Tonga was marked by the visit of Moulton Finau, one of the original Tongan students from 1896, and his son, Lupeti Finau (ON ’36). Lupeti’s son, Steve Finau (ON ’66) was studying at Newington at this time.

Throughout Centenary Week, the Founders Building, Centenary Hall and Nesbitt Wing were floodlit at night.

Back to Newington Day 2013

In our 150th Anniversary year, we are delighted by how many Newingtonians have been encouraged to reconnect with the College, particularly those who may not have engaged with friends or past teachers for some time.

Back to Newington Day is the very special day that we set aside every year to extend Newington’s hospitality, celebrate the sportsmanship of our rugby and football teams and to support the Newington parents who voluntarily work to raise funds to assist with the co-curricular activities of the boys.

Community celebrations and anniversaries have been a long-standing tradition of the College. This year we look back, and using the Black and White Cookbook, our stallholders will recreate the recipes and traditions of Newington families passed from generation to generation.

Join us for our biggest home day celebration of the year. Wyvern will be involved, so check out the attached flyer below to see the fun activities they have in store for the day!

Poetry Performance Competition 2013

Over the next few weeks boys will be preparing to take part in the Poetry Performance Competition, now firmly established as one of Wyvern’s major events.  The competition presents an excellent opportunity for all students in the school to refine and demonstrate their public speaking skills.  All boys will enter the competition and are expected to select a poem, learn it off by heart and then perform it in front of the class.  Finalists will be selected from each class.  Year level finals will then be held to decide the top three places in each year group.

Class teachers will assist their students with the selection of poems.  In addition, Mrs Barnes in the library will have the school’s poetry collection on hand to assist in this process.  Boys may also bring in poems from home.  Each boy is expected to retain a copy of his poem, as well as provide a copy for his class teacher for approval by the end of week 3.  All poems should be published work by recognised authors.

As a guideline, poems should be of approximately the following lengths:

Kindy – between 4 – 6 simple lines (not nursery rhymes)

Year 1 – between 6 – 10 simple lines

Year 2 – between 8 – 12 lines

Years 3 & 4 – between 10 -20 lines

Years 5 & 6 – between 18 – 30 lines

Class heats will be held in week 5 of this term with four boys from each class being selected to go through to the year level finals to be held in week 6.  There will be a Poetry Performance Competition Award Ceremony on Friday 30 August at 2pm. At this time the 1st place winners from each year group will perform their poems. We thank the P&F for their kind donation of prizes which will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. All finalists will be presented with Highly Commended certificates.

The following guidelines will be used when judging the boys:

Difficulty of poem (not length) -10 points

Voice (use/projection, tone, diction, pace) -10 points

Animation (manner, personality, gestures) – 10 points

Overall presentation and style – 10 points

No costumes may be used, however, the boys are permitted to use a maximum of 1 prop.  Expression, gestures and body language are to be encouraged.

BACK TO NEWINGTON DAY – 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013 10.00AM – 4.00PM

Help us celebrate this amazing year!

WHAT IS BTN?

Many years ago the Rowing Association wanted to purchase new boats for rowing. As the boats are unique hand crafted imported boats, they came at a large cost so the Rowing Support Group developed a market day where all the boys would come to the school when a sporting event was on and they had markets and BBQ’s to raise funds for the boats. Since that time the day has been put into the school calendar as Back To Newington Day to celebrate all things Black & White. Wyvern takes part in the event, as many of our boys will head across to the senior campus in later years. Wyvern will have an area set up with the following activities mainly focused around children’s activities:

  • Jumping Castle
  • Big Slide
  • A Dunking Machine (yes come and get wet)
  • Face Painting/Tattoo’s
  • Sand Art/Plaster Painting
  • Smash A Jaffa
  • Lucky Dips
  • Balloon Making
  • Badge Making
  • Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
  • Strawberry & Marshmallow Skewers
  • Black & White Lollipops
  • Slushies – Cola and Raspberry

HOW CAN YOU HELP?????

We have organised everything so all we need is your time. Please come along and volunteer for 1-2 hours throughout the day to help Nicole from CAST in all the sections. Click here for volunteer roster. We do not require any skills as we have engaged in a professional face painter (everyone sigh with relief) but we do need you to add to the experience of the day with your family. Come along and enjoy the day, watch the games and see the clash of the 1st XV rugby and 1st XI football in their final games against Shore.

Please contact Nicole Newson at nicnewson@msn.co

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST

The annual Wyvern Father’s Day Breakfast will be held on Friday 30th August at 7.30am in Wyvern Hall. The Breakfast is open to all fathers and grandfathers of Wyvern boys and is always fun. Please contact Costa Mina at cmina@reality-check.com.au

A Message from Mr Holden

Congratulations to all Wyvern students for their very fine efforts at our recent 3-6 Athletics Carnival. The weather was exceptionally kind to us and it was tremendous to see students, parents and staff enjoying a full day of athletic participation.  We witnessed many outstanding individual performances as well as strong team spirit as the 6 houses of Wyvern and Lindfield Preparatory Schools competed. On the day Coates House triumphed to win the Wyvern Trophy.

Good luck to the Newington Preparatory Schools’ athletics team who host an inter-school athletics meet at Homebush this weekend.

I have become increasingly concerned about the number of parents who are using the bus zone outside the front of the school as a drop off zone or pick up area. Road rules around the Campus operate to ensure the safety of our students and, as such, I respectively request that all parents adhere to these. Marrickville Council have indicated that there will be an increased Ranger presence around Wyvern over the coming weeks. Thank you for your assistance with  this matter.

Early next week students will bring home a copy of the Sesquicentenary Whole School Photo. The photo is a gift from the College’s Sesquicentenary Committee to every Newington boy. I thank and acknowledge the tremendous work of the Sesquicentenary Committee,  under the leadership of Mr Rod Bosman, for their tremendous work in this  special year.

Finally, may I also remind you that the final day of Term 3 for Wyvern students is Friday 20 September.

Mr Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
