Young ICT Explorers Competition
On the 31st August twelve Wyvern boys attended the finals of the Young ICT Explorers Competition. The aim of this annual event is to encourage school students to create high quality Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related projects. Students have to apply what they have learnt in the ICT classroom to develop a technology related project. The event was judged on the creativity, uniqueness, quality and level of difficulty for each project. All of the boys from the Semester 1 Primary ICT Club entered the event and twelve boys were selected to represent Wyvern in the finals held at the University of New South Wales. The boys who attended the finals were Xavier Papps, Nicholas Court, Owen Zhang, Jack Rathborne, Luca Capuano, Angellos Korsanos, Alexander O’Dea, Finn Krassoi, Abraham Hassan, Peter Pontifix, James Evans and Max McNamara. Their projects were iBooks created using iBooks Author for topics studied in Wyvern classrooms. These have been accepted on the iBook Store in fifty one countries. All of these iBooks can be downloaded from a website developed by Benjamin Leung and Thomas Marchese at http://newingtonwyvernictclub.weebly.com.
Each project was evaluated by a panel of three judges who interviewed the groups about their design process. The boys had to explain how they created their iBooks, what obstacles they had to overcome and how they thought their project might be used in the future. All of the groups are to be congratulations on the quality of their product and the professional and articulate presentation they gave to the judges on the day. The competition was a wonderful opportunity for the boys to showcase their iBooks but also learn from other students at a number of schools and see the projects they had created. The boys did not receive a place in the competition but should be commended on their efforts and for reaching the finals. In the high school division Newington boys placed first and third which was an exciting result. If you would be interested in entering the competition next year it is not to early to begin developing your project now, Mrs Clemens would love to support you for the 2014 event. Newington Snowports through to Nationals!
Over the last week, 12 boys from all three Newington campuses were invited to compete against the best skiers and boarders from across New South Wales. The boys competed in a range of events from Cross Country skiing to Snowboarding and Moguls. All the boys competing were present because they had finished in the top percentage of their events amongst the Sydney competition at Thredbo during the winter holidays. So competition on the mountain was fierce, as well as the conditions! Our skiers and boarders who competed on the Thursday and Friday had to also deal with some pretty difficult conditions with poor visibility on the mountain; this made their job even harder.
I am pleased to announce that of the 12 boys competing, four finished in the top percentage of their events and have been invited to compete in the Australian National Competition at Mt Buller, Victoria from 4 – 8 September.
Those boys were: Flynn Gannon (4/HO) for both Snowboard and Snowboard Cross, Alexander Woolley (6/KI), Sam Martin (5/WI) and Josh Billingham (5/WI) who all qualified for the Moguls event, a particularly difficult discipline, especially in poor visibility!
I congratulate all the boys that competed for their spirit and enthusiasm and I’m sure you’ll join with me in wishing the boys all the best at the National Championships!

Faith Matters
Over the years I have come to conclude that many of my prayers have “seemingly” gone unanswered. I say “seemingly” because I know that the God who knows what is best for me, the God who is all-wise and all-loving will often withhold from me what I perceive is something good. In other words, my prayers are often self-centred. The following prayer from Mother Teresa has helped me to re-think how I should pray.
Lord, when I am hungry – give me someone in need of food;
When I am thirsty – send me someone needing a drink;
When I am cold – send someone to warm;
When I am grieved, someone to console;
When my cross grows heavy, let me share another’s cross too;
When I am poor, lead me to someone in need;
When I have not time, give me someone I can help a little while;
When I am humiliated, let me have someone to praise;
When I am disheartened, send me someone to cheer;
When I think only of myself, draw my thoughts to another.
(“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12)

Olivier Maraldo – 1W
Olivier made discoveries about aerial view in landscape painting. He was able to create a drawn then painted view of the city with symbols for the road, parkland water and factories.

A Message from Mr Holden
Last Friday Wyvern boys, fathers and grandfathers enjoyed a superb Father’s Day Breakfast which was organised and led by Year 2 parents Sarah Pussell, Kathy Burshtein and their team of helpers. Many thanks must also go to Year 5 parents, Anne Potter, Kerry Maxwell, Sandy Palmer, Catherine Dwyer and Andrea Schlaphoff who organised and distributed the fantastic Fathers Day gifts to the boys.
On Saturday the College celebrated a wonderful Back to Newington Day. Apart from the sporting triumphs it was wonderful to see so many Wyvern families enjoying the occasion. Wyvern’s Year 6 rugby teams enjoyed a half-time run during the main rugby fixture and impressed all – well done! I especially thank Nicole Newson, Emma Cope and Phil Argy from our P & F Executive Team for their hard work and organisation of the Wyvern P & F stalls.
Our Year 4 and Year 5 students returned from their respective camp experiences. Such activities are important parts of our wider social and personal development programs and, as such, I am so pleased that all boys faced the challenge of being away from home with such confidence and resilience. I especially commend Year 5 boys and staff for coping so well with unexpected sickness of some boys. The care shown by boys to other boys as well as the outstanding dedication of staff was remarkable. I thank Year 5 parents as well for their support of our staff in such difficult circumstances.
A reminder that our last day of Term 3 is Friday 20 September.
Mr Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
