New Play Equipment at Wyvern
Boys enjoying the new play equipment in Mary Andrews grounds
Dear Parents
During the September holiday break Newington College Preparatory Schools’ took a group of Wyvern and Lindfield boys on a Rugby and Soccer tour to New Zealand. The touring party included 36 students and three staff members. Staff attending were Mark Caulfield (Tour organiser and Soccer coach), Neil Brunton (Manager) and Joel Wilson (Rugby coach). The boys were from Year 5 and 6 with ages ranging from 11-13 years old..
The tour flew in to Christchurch travelling south to Queenstown. There boys played against opposing New Zealand school sides in Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.
Mr Joel Wilson has done a fabulous job of writing up blogs of their tour journey.

THE GREAT WYVERN BAKE OFF
The end of year is nearly here and we all need the time to gather ourselves and organise summer play days and birthday parties. As the Great Garden party was such a HUGE success we thought to continue the theme of baking and have a BAKE OFF. That’s right – year group against year group to provide the best cake they can make to be judged and eaten by the whole of Wyvern. The afternoon will be a catch up in Mary Andrews Garden with pizza slices and lemonade for sale.
We need 6 “bakers” from each year group to volunteer to be the YEAR GROUP BAKER (YGB).
If you would like to enter yourself into the WYVERN BAKE OFF please send an email to James Fairbank –

We all know how important physical health is and we even give our motor vehicles the occasional check-up. Here’s a plan for keeping your soul, your inner self in shape: (a) Don’t question your faith, question your doubts. God’s promises are for ‘believers.’ (b) Don’t be a ‘lone ranger.’ It’s no accident that the Old Testament contains the story of God’s people, and that the Epistles were written to congregations. We grow as we relate – not isolate! (c) Fall asleep and wake up immersed in gratitude. It’ll transform your day. The Bible says, “In everything give thanks!” (d) Always err on the side of mercy. Philip Yancey writes: “I marvel at the humility of a God who descends to live inside…His ‘flawed’ creatures…Do I show that same attitude towards people of whom I disapprove?” (e) Be gracious to the people who irk you. God created them too! (f) Forgive those who’ve hurt you. Harbouring hatred hinders healing, so bring your hurts to God.
Mr Peter Morphew
Chaplain
Alexander Chiew – KL
Alexander looked at pictures of bird’s nest and a real nest. He was able to interpret these as a 3D sculpture. Alexander used clay and mixed media in this work. He is to be commended for collecting materials from home and remembering to bring these into class for use in his art work.
Jamie Hokin – 1S
Jamie considered the aerial view in his drawing of The Kitchen Garden. He was also inspired by the Aboriginal artwork from the Central Western Desert when creating printed patterns to represent various plants.

Welcome back to what promises to be a very full and active Term 4. Please refer to the latest Term 4 parent calendar (available via Wyvern Spaces) for all details.
YEAR 2-3 TRANSITION MEETING
On Wednesday 16 October at 7:00pm there will be a special meeting for parents of current Year 2 students who make the transition into Year 3 next year. We have held this meeting for the last few years and parents have indicated to us that they have found this to be a useful forum to assist them in preparing their sons as they enter a new phase of the school.
NEW ZEALAND RUGBY AND SOCCER TOUR
During the spring break Mr Wilson, Mr Brunton and Mr Caulfield led a very successful Wyvern and Lindfield rugby, soccer and cultural tour to New Zealand. The boys represented the school with enormous pride and should be congratulated for their superb spirit and fine conduct. I also thank both staff and parents who accompanied the tour for looking after the boys so well.
NAPLAN
Next week parents of students in Year 3 and Year 5 will receive results from national compulsory assessments (NAPLAN) undertaken at the start of Term 2. Once again Wyvern students have performed very well in all key areas tested, with the school’s average score in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Numeracy being significantly higher than the average score for other state and independent schools in NSW.
I congratulate all students and teachers for these excellent results. When interpreting individual performances it is important to remember that the NAPLAN assessment information is nearly two terms out of date and, as such, does not take into account progress that students have made in the interim. Should you wish to discuss your son’s results please contact class teachers.
I advise parents that the Rev Peter Morphew takes a well deserved long service leave break this term. Please feel free to contact Chaplin Michael Bennet via mpjbennett@newington.nsw.edu.au if he can assist you with any spiritual matters.
Finally, a reminder that the Wyvern P&F AGM meeting takes place next week, Thursday 17th October at 7.00pm in Wyvern Hall. On this occasion a new executive committee will be elected, so I do encourage a strong turnout. I thank the outgoing committee for their wonderful contribution this year. Julie Gigg will be stepping down as President, as her youngest son leaves Wyvern this year. Her tenure as President has been so successful and I thank her for an outstanding contribution to Wyvern boys, parents and staff.
Mr Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
