To the Newington College Community,
In the spirit of a consultative and collaborative vision for Newington College, we now seek your feedback on the Draft Educational Strategic Plan 2015–2018: Discover What’s Possible
Learning is at the heart of what schools are about and so preparing and planning for ‘preferred futures’ is essential for a good school. The future we plan for Newington builds upon the firm beliefs developed by the pioneers of the College as well as those of our current directional custodians, the Newington College Council.
The plan is divided into sections, each with themes and goals. While not included in this version, each goal has multiple strategic actions.
Any feedback is most welcome via the Strategic Plan Feedback Form below, or email Angela Poulios, Executive Assistant to the Headmaster. Feedback closes Wednesday, April 2 2014.
Feedback on the Strategic Plan 2015-2018

The Privacy Laws have Changed
Important changes to the Privacy Act 1988 commenced on 12 March 2014. The Privacy Act now includes a set 13 new harmonised privacy principles that regulate the handling of personal information by Australian Government agencies and some private sector organisations. These principles are called the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). The Privacy Act also includes new provisions on codes of practice about information privacy (APP codes). The Office of the Australian Privacy Commissioner (OAIC) has detailed information on their website.
At Newington College, we take our obligations to protect personal and other private information seriously. That’s why we have a Privacy Policy in place to make sure we safeguard your information appropriately.
The Australian Privacy Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim, has explained that recent changes, “…are the most significant changes to privacy laws in over 25 years and affect a large section of the community. The world has changed remarkably since the late 1980s when the Privacy Act was first introduced, and so the changes were required to bring our laws up to date with contemporary information handling practices, including global data flows.”

Dear Parents,
Wyvern has registered to be part of the 2014 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, being held nationwide on Friday 21 March. It’s a day where school communities across Australia ‘take a stand together’ against bullying and violence.
Wyvern is dedicated to creating a supportive school environment, free from bullying, harassment and violence. By working together we are sending a clear message to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside of school, are not okay at any time.
On this day teachers will be running class activities to celebrate the National Day of action against Bullying and Violence.

On the 6th March 2014 eight boys from Wyvern attended the highly anticipated 7 round Swiss Chess Tournament. These highly skilled boys included Benjamin Nguyen, Calum Boland, Adrian Lo, Kieran Casey, Kim Lam, Fallon Fotaras, Hamish Thompson, Christopher Mina and Jaxon Jarvis. This event took place at the Concordia Gallery, Newington College.
Facing off against nearly one hundred other students from the city area. Some of these schools which provided a challenge for the confident Newingtonians included Carlton Public, Summer Hill Public, Abbottsford Public and more schools. These boys flew through the tournament claiming win after win.
Four rounds in the morning half of the competition found the boys in the lead of Summer Hill public by half a point. Praises go to Adrian Lo for his undefeated record until this point. Benjamin Nguyen and Calum Boland provided valuable points and Fallon and Hamish did extremely well.
The boys enjoyed a quick play over on the Old Boys Oval. A soccer ball to the face rendered Benjamin with insight into the following rounds. The boys returned to Concordia sweating and licking lollipops of various colours.
Post lunch the boys were plagued with loses however credit to Benjamin and Kim Lam for going through the second half with a series of wins. Jaxon Jarvis came back from a few loses in the second half winning multiple times.
Unfortunately for Adrian, he was pitted against some experienced players in his last two games. This resulted in two loses for Adrian. One of these last two players was the champion who knocked out Adrian after a well fought battle.
In the end none of the eight boys made the top five, however, they fought for third place. This will send them to the semi finals.

After three months of rehearsals and many weekends spent in Centenary Hall honing our dancing skills, the cast of boys from Years 7 to 12 and girls from PLC Sydney, MLC School and SCEGGS Darlinghurst performed the broadway classic, Oliver! at the Parade Theatre at NIDA.
The show was met with critical acclaim from staff, parents and boys alike. The 88 strong company was lead by Leo Tracy (12/MO) who played Fagin and Senior Prefect Kevin Stathis (12/JN) who played Bill Sykes. The musical also showed off the talent of some up and coming stars of the Drama department such as Jack Crawford (9/KL) as The Artful Dodger and Oliver Smith (8/MA) in the title role.
The opportunity to perform in a professional theatre was relished by all and particularly exciting on our closing night when we performed to a sold out house of around 650 people!
We encourage all boys to get involved in future musicals at the College, even if you have no prior experience. Anyone who wants to be in the cast is allowed to participate and we can honestly say, it will be one of the greatest experiences in your time at school.
A big thank you to all of the staff involved who worked tirelessly to give us the experience, particularly Ms Smith, Mr Scott, Lauren McKenna, Mrs McKenzie, Mr Williams, Mr Harris and Dr Gilmour.

Hello!
The Kindy Pizza Party was so much fun. More than a hundred people gathered in the Mary Andrews Garden on a lovely Friday evening. Our Kindy children and their siblings had a great time playing games and making pizza for our dinner – and it tasted great! It felt a bit like a birthday party. A few fathers were being great helpers and I kept an eye out to see if there were any prospects who could be successors for ‘pizza dad’ Rob Jablonski who will be going to high school after next year.
You may think I’m joking about the succession plan, but we do have a legitimate call out for Kindy and Year 1 parents interested in taking on an apprenticeship for our woodfire oven. We will take volunteers from other year groups, we just thought that Kindy and Year 1 apprentices would have a longer time in the role. The first ‘on the job’ training opportunity is coming up really soon at the Great Garden Party on Friday, 4 April, from 3:00pm-5:00pm.
All year groups have well and truly started their preparation
If you’re interested in a one-off volunteering opportunity and would like to help out on the day please contact your class parent(s).
The other really good volunteering opportunity coming up is the Wyvern Music Weekend on 24-25 May. This is an important musical activity for our boys, many of who are in choir and/or a band. We will need some volunteers for afternoon tea on the 24th as well as morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on 25 May (the lunch shift will need BBQ experts). If you’re interested please email Creative Arts Support Team Lead Nicole Newson.
Finally, dads, I’ve had a sneak peak at the Mother’s Day gift catalogue put together by my fellow Year 5 mums and it’s wonderful. A great range of gifts at a great range of prices – there’s something for every mum.
Dates for your diary
Until next time, be well and happy

Life wasn’t meant to be easy!
Most of us are far too serious for our own good. We’re uptight about everything: being five minutes late, getting stuck in traffic, waiting in line, somebody giving us a wrong look, overcooking a meal, gaining a kilo, discovering a wrinkle, making an honest mistake; you name it – we lose all perspective! The problem is we have unrealistic expectations. God didn’t say he’d take us out of our troubles; he said he’d bring us through them and make us stronger. If you want to experience the joy Jesus promised, do two things: (1) Admit that your uptightness is largely because of the way you’ve decided life should be. (2) Understand that your expectations are causing most of your frustrations. If you keep expecting things to be a certain way and they aren’t, you’ll always be upset. Here’s an idea: try approaching each day without all those expectations. For example, don’t require everybody to be friendly; then when some are you’ll be delighted. Don’t expect your day to be trouble-free; instead when problems come, say: “Thank you Lord for a chance to grow.” Do it and you’ll see how much better everything is. Rather than fighting against life you’ll be flowing with it. And pretty soon, if you work at it, you’ll enjoy your life more – and other people will enjoy being around you much more too! That’s why Paul wrote, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”

K – 2 Artist of the Week
Luca Celona-Bower in KL and Fletcher Lapthorne and Nathan Chong from 1W are to be congratulated on being awarded ‘Artist of the Week’.
Luca carefully printed a flowery scene like Monet’s Garden. He was able to use ‘Bunny Hop’ finger printing as a technique to mix the primary colours into more colours. Nathan looked at the Hokusai work titled ‘The Great Wave’. He was able to neatly recreate this idea in a 3D form using paper as sculpture.
Fletcher thought about and used acrylic paint to create a snowy landscape background in his art work based on the weather. He then cleverly drew action ski figures in oil pastel to complete the work.
Nathan’s skill in curling, bending, folding and gluing showed great fine motor skill and imagination. Nathan Chong.

Congratulations to all boys from Years 3 – 6 for their wonderful efforts at the cross country carnival this week. The energy, commitment and tenacity on display was inspiring. Special congratulations to our age Champions and runners-up for their high quality performances. These students, along with the other leading runners, will go on to represent Newington at the Inter-Schools’ IPSHA Cross Country event on Saturday 5th April. We wish them every success in this very competitive event.
I congratulate Thomas Oates, Nicholas Venetoulis and Sebastian Parhash who have been selected to represent IPSHA schools at the Combined Independent Schools’ Swimming Carnival to be held next week. The same excellent level was also achieved by Mark Addabbo and Angus Ole in Basketball who competed at a recent tournament. Finally, I congratulate Ned Barnet-Hepples for his outstanding achievement in being selected to play for the Combined Independent Schools Cricket team in a recent tournament. Ned is also on the reserve list for the CIS AFL team. Well done to all.
I am delighted to see so many students placing their own poems on our ‘Poetree’ (created by one of our very talented Art teachers, Mrs Bourke) located outside the Library. This special activity marks ‘World Poetry Day’. I do encourage you, if you get the chance, to take a look at the wonderful contributions boys have made – the quality of the poems is exceptional.
