Back to Newington Day 2016

Back to Newington Day 2016 was a huge success thanks to the support of the College’s dedicated P&F. The day was a perfect example of the P&F’s vision, “a stronger community through a connected community.” It was wonderful to see all of the College’s support groups, our Lindfield and Wyvern younger brothers and the Tongan/Fijian community working together as one. Maybe it was the smoke signals being sent from the Tongan BBQ to say that everyone was Welcome Back To Newington, but the campus was filled with many old and new faces.

Thanks to the addition of a shuttle bus service from Stanmore to Tempe to transport people between sporting venues, as well as extra parking at Stanmore Public School, Back to Newington Day was easy to get to by car or foot.

By the end of the day, we sold over 1000 sausages, 400 steaks, 600 kebabs, had frothed over 90 litres of milk and diced 25 punnets of strawberries.

The market stalls on both Memorial Drive and inside the Marketplace in Centenary Hall were alive with the hustle and bustle of happy shoppers who all left with bags of purchases and armfuls of fresh flowers that were a colour explosion at the entrance to the Marketplace. Whether you wanted to purchase a homemade cake or slice, some Newington merchandise or a warming pie and peas from Harry’s Café de Wheels, there was something for everyone!

At midday, over 75 MOONs (Mothers of Old Newingtonians) were treated to a high tea style lunch in Prescott Hall and celebrated their founder, Mrs Joy Christian, as she passed the baton on to Tracey Markos and the next generation of MOONs.

To end this spectacular day, the Football 1st XI had a win 3-0 over Sydney Boys High to continue their undefeated run and the Rugby 1st XV won by one try 34-29 in the dying minutes over ladder leaders Scots College to show they are still a force in the GPS competition.

Thank you to all the Parents and Friends that volunteered and to all the students that supported the community by handing out programs and helping out with the BBQ. It truly made everyone feel Welcome at Back to Newington Day.

See you in 2017.

Founders Concert Brillance

Last Thursday evening the boys in the Wyvern Choir combined with the Lindfield Prep Choir to perform at the annual Senior School Founder’s Concert. It was a wonderful evening of Music and the combined prep choirs are to be congratulated on their fine performance. Presenting two songs – ‘Sailing Home’ (dedicated to Jessica Watson) and ‘Hot Chocolate’ – the boys gave a very impressive, polished performance much to the delight of the audience. Well done boys and thank you for your hard work!

Theatresports

On Friday 17th of June, boys from Year 5 and 6 performed in the Term 2 Wyvern Theatresports competition. It was great to watch the boys showcase their skills in improvisation, storytelling, cooperation and teamwork. Boys took to the stage and performed a variety of Theatresports games as they competed for the Term 2 Championship. At the end, the competition was very close with only 1 POINT separating first and second place. Every one of the boys should be commended on his efforts. A big congratulations to the team of Harry Colhoun, Jimmy Lukin, Harrison Loeffler and Sameer Aziz who took out 1st place and are now the current Wyvern Theatresports Champions!

Growing Appetites

Dear Parents,

We have had an influx of students coming to the office asking for sandwich vouchers as they have already eaten all their food but are still hungry. It could also be that your son is experiencing a growth spurt and needs extra fuel to get him through the day. Whilst the purpose of the sandwich voucher is purely in an emergency when your son doesn’t have any lunch (whether it was left at home or their lunch order from the Tuckshop didn’t get processed in time), we would never turn a student away if they are still hungry.

Can we please ask that you make sure that your son has extra food packed in his lunch box in the event that it is needed.

Your attention to this is greatly appreciated.

Artists of the Week

Years 3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 3

Year 3 made a collage about Nick Bottom from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’.

Congratulations to Finn Dauphinee for making an interesting and humorous ‘Nick Bottom’

Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 made swords for Shakespeare week.

These swords were a mixture of skills, such as plaiting string, using air drying clay to make filigree, designing pommels and hilts then adding jewels and spray painting to make them look realistic. The boys were very inventive and creative with their swords, and they are all on display outside the Year 5 classrooms and the downstairs open learning area. Well done Year 5 and 6.

Congratulations to these boys for being artist of the week.

A Message from Mr Holden

We were treated to a stunning day last week for our Years 3-6 Prep Schools’ Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to see the high level of participation and enjoyment from boys as well as tremendous ‘House Spirit’. There were a number of excellent individual performances including two long standing records being broken. Well done to Bililign Robertson who broke a 32 year old record for the senior 800 metres and Sam Walker who broke a 9 year old junior discus record. The Lucas senior relay team also broke the relay record. Well done to all for a tremendous day.

My thanks to the P&F for their wonderful efforts with ‘Back to Newington Day’ on Saturday. Their addition of stalls aimed at younger children made the event hugely enjoyable for all ages. A special mention to the Wyvern U12 rugby and football teams who played very well in short games against Lindfield Prep prior to the 1st XV and 1st XI games.

Last week the College underwent a thorough inspection by NSW Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) as part of the College’s registration and accreditation requirement. The lead inspector gave exceptionally positive feedback about all areas of our learning programs, our approach to student care and all our other policies and procedures. Ms Sandra Gray, Deputy K-3 deserves particular praise for overseeing the process leading up to and during the inspection.

The Wyvern Choir performed superbly well at last week’s Founder’s Concert and certainly did not look out of place amongst the elite ensembles of the Senior School. Bravo for contributing to such an outstanding concert.

Finally, congratulation to Mr Tony Cross (Year 4 Team Leader) and his wife Laetitia on the arrival of their baby daughter, George Daisy Cross.

Ian Holden
Head of Wyvern House
