Wyvern Christmas Tree – Barnardos Gifts for Kids

EVERY CHILD DESERVES TO FEEL THE JOY, WARMTH AND HAPPINESS OF CHRISTMAS!

This year we are supporting Barnardos Australia Gifts for Kids to reach their goal of collecting a gift for every child in care this Christmas. Thousands of Australian children suffer from family violence and homelessness and Christmas can be a sad time for them. That’s why our school is helping Barnardos Australia and together we can make a big difference and bring smiles to children in need this Christmas. Gift collection will begin on Monday 31st October and will end on Thursday 1st December.

If you would like to donate online please go to barnardos.org.au/giftsforkids

Each year Barnardos struggle to receive gifts for infants/toddlers aged between 0 – 2 years and teenagers aged between 13 – 18 years.

Some suggestions of infants/toddlers appropriate gifts for 0 – 2 years are:

By supporting Barnardos Gifts you are helping make a difference to these children at Christmas Time.

Why We Ask For Unwrapped Gifts

Please do NOT wrap gifts as we need to view the gifts to ensure their safety and to allocate gifts according to a child’s age, gender and individual circumstances.

Please feel free to donate wrapping paper for our centre staff to wrap presents once allocated.

The Cow Eye Dissection

On Friday 30th October Dr Christian Turner came in to teach us how to dissect a cow’s eye. His job at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead is a Paediatric Cardiologist. This means he directs the surgeons on how to help children’s hearts. Surprisingly, he had not dissected a cow’s eye since university, so his memory must be amazing. My dad taught us incredibly well how to dissect a cow’s eye and showed us step by step on what to do. The first thing he told us was that we needed to respect the cow’s eye. He explained that all the eyes had been part of a living creature a couple of days ago. Dr Turner taught us about the different parts of the eye and what they do to help us see. These included the lens, vitreous humour, sclera, the optic nerve and the iris. After Dr Turner taught us about the different parts of the eye, we were allowed to go off and do the dissection ourselves. The tools we used were a pair of scissors, a probe, and if we needed help, a scalpel.

Below is a picture of the eye Tom Chanter and James Adams and I dissected. Also shown is a cross-section of a cow’s eye. In our team we had two dissectors and a cameraman. The last job was my position. Despite being the doctor’s son, we did not get very far into the dissection and we had to call for help numerous times. Nevertheless, it was still a great experience for all. I even put on my gloves from time to time to poke the eye.

Opera Australia 2017

Congratulations to Aiden Carter (6L)  for successfully auditioning for Opera Australia’s 2017 summer season. Aiden will be performing in Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and Pagliacci by Leoncavallo as part of the small children’s chorus. This is a great honour for Aiden who has been performing in Wyvern Choir since he came to Wyvern in Year 5. His passion for performance was evident last year when he performed the lead role of Samuel in Wyvern’s musical production of Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan.

Aiden said ‘I have always loved singing and performance. Experiences like theatre sports and being part of the school musical last year were right up my alley.’ He has also participated in a summer course at NIDA that helped to further develop his stagecraft and movement, while performing with the Wyvern Choir, Wyvern Chorale and Chapel Band.

When Aiden was contacted about his success he said ‘I never really expected to get in so when I found out I’d been offered a place I was astonished and overjoyed. I am very excited! We are excited for you too Aiden and can’t wait to see you on the Sydney Opera House stage!

Faith Matters

ADOPTION

Adoption isn’t something you earn. It’s a gift you receive. Can you imagine prospective parents saying, “We’d like to adopt little Johnnie, but first we want to know does he have a house, money for tuition, a ride to school in the morning and clothes to wear every day? No agency would stand for such talk. They’d say: “Wait a minute, you don’t adopt little Johnnie because of what he has, you adopt him because of what he needs. He needs a loving home.”

The apostle Paul writes, “[We] have received the spirit of adoption… by which we cry out ‘Abba! Father'” (Romans 8:15). Adoptive parents understand these words. They know what it means to have an emptiness in their hearts, to hunt, set out on a mission, take responsibility for a child perhaps with a spotted past and a dubious future. And that’s what God offers us! Knowing full well the trouble we humans can be. Regardless of the past He offers us the right to call Him “Abba,” which literally means, “My daddy.”

Paul didn’t say we’ve earned the spirit of adoption. He said we’ve received it. Why’s that important? Because if we can’t earn it by our efforts, we can’t lose it through our poor performance. If we can’t earn it or deserve, it’s a gift! Why does any parent want a child? To love and to share their life with – and that’s how God feels about you today!

A Message from Mr Holden

PRIZE GIVING

This year’s Annual Wyvern Prize Giving for students in Years 3 – 6 will take place in Centenary Hall on Wednesday 7 December at 9:00am. Students are asked to meet their class teachers at the Senior School outside the Music Centre (next to Centenary Hall) no later than 8:30am wearing summer uniform minus black cap. Following Prize Giving we invite parents and students to join Wyvern staff for morning tea under the space frame area near to the gym.

Whilst we take the opportunity to award a number of prizes for outstanding effort and achievement (categories listed below), the ceremony is primarily an opportunity for the Wyvern community to mark and celebrate a most positive year. As such, this event is a compulsory activity for all students in Years 3 – 6. Although the final school day for students in K – 2 is Tuesday 6 December, K – 2 families are most welcome to attend Prize Giving. K – 2 boys must attend in uniform. The end of the ceremony marks the official start of the summer break for students.

Tomorrow we will commemorate Remembrance Day with a short service. The concept of Remembrance Day can be a difficult one for the younger generation to grasp as inevitably, over time, our connection to these immensely significant events starts to fade. But this is precisely the reason why pausing to reflect on the vital roles our service men and women have played in past conflicts it is so important. I am always extremely impressed with the respectful and dignified manner in which our boys’ honour those who have sacrificed so much.
