A Message from Mr Holden

It has been an exciting time for Newington College with the announcement that Mr Michael Parker will be our 19th Headmaster. He will replace Dr David Mulford, who retires at the end of this year. Mr Parker is currently Headmaster at Oxley College in Bowral, which has enjoyed significant advances in academic performance and survey results across students, teachers and staff under his leadership. He will join the Newington community with his wife Fiona, a Senior Lecturer in English at UNSW, and daughters Julia and Elena, on January 1 2019.  I offer him the warmest of welcomes.

Congratulations to the Year 3 to Year 6 Wyvern students who all tackled yesterday’s cross county event with great energy and tenacity. There were some wonderful individual performances (see the Wyvern Sports section for details) and I was especially pleased to see such great camaraderie and team spirit on display. Thank you to parents who dodged the showers to support your sons and this event. I also acknowledge the superb organisation of Mr Joel Wilson, Wyvern Sportsmaster, and the assistance of the whole staff team.

Just a quick reminder that prior to this evening’s P and F meeting, there will be an opportunity for parents to have a formal tour of our new areas including the Early Learning Centre, Year 6 Centre, STEM room and the upgraded music facilities. Please meet in the Wyvern Hall at 6:30pm. After the tour, Ms Aimee Parkinson (Year 1 Team Leader) will present some further information about our Big Write initiative that we are implementing in all classes this year.

Artists of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

Marcus Ferlito KW

Oscar O’Halloran KW

Kindergarten have had their EYES on colour mixing.  They have been exploring the Primary Colours Red, Blue and Yellow and have looked at what Secondary Colours they can make by mixing them.  Marcus and Oscar mixed some beautifully clean colours and showed great craftsmanship in assembling their artwork.

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

Year 3 have completed their ‘Zentangle ‘frog  artworks. This was a complicated process in which the boys combined realistic frog drawings with a patterned background on mineral paper. The boys then used watercolour textas to add colour to these amazing pieces. The boys in Year 3 worked really hard on these pieces. Well done.

Artist of the week goes to Max Moore, Nicholas Softsis and Jack Cornish.

Faith Matters

As part of Lent and the lead up to the Easter weekend, we’ll take look at some of the Seven Last Words of Christ, and their significance for us today.

“I am thirsty.”

The end of Jesus’s execution on the cross is near, and he makes one last request – but there may me more to it than we first think.

28 Jesus knew that he had now finished his work. And in order to make the Scriptures come true, he said, “I am thirsty!” 29 A jar of cheap wine was there. Someone then soaked a sponge with the wine and held it up to Jesus’ mouth on the stem of a hyssop plant.

John 19:28-29

There is no doubt that Jesus would have been excruciatingly thirsty. His pain and suffering so great, and his body shutting down, he of course would be craving water. But as we look past that, Jesus is also making us aware of the incredible, history-shaping significance of his death in this moment.

This is the same man, who weeks before had met the woman at the well and spoken these life-giving words: “no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give is like a flowing fountain that gives eternal life.” (John 4:14) Later, at the end of the Festival of Shelters in Jerusalem, as priests carried huge Jars of water through the town, a symbol of God’s presence, Jesus declares “If you are thirsty, come to me and drink! Have faith in me, and you will have life-giving water flowing from deep inside you…” (John 7:37,38).

I think that in this moment, more than simply asking for a drink, Jesus was referring to the depth of sacrifice he was making. This Son of God, who himself was the fountain of life, was rung dry in this moment, the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Soon he would overcome that weight, and his living water would flow again.

Year 2 Bee Talk

Tim Lilley is a Year 2 father at Wyvern. One of his hobbies is bee keeping. Year 2 have been studying living things with arthropods or as we call them –  ‘Mini Beasts’ as a focus this term. The year 2 students have been particularly fascinated with our studies into the features of bees. Tim came in to talk to the boys about the Science of caring for living things like bees and harvesting honey. The excitement could best be described as ‘a buzz’. The boys had so many questions and used their observational skills to answer many of Tim’s carefully crafted questions. Everyone enjoyed the great photos, slow motion bee footage, the equipment and Tim’s highly engaging talk. A big thank you to Tim Lilley and the Lilley family for their support of STEM at Wyvern.

Year 3 Sleepover

There was never a dull moment. Not an instant to lose. Every minute was an opportunity to make a memory – and a myriad of memories were made.

The first Year 3 milestone was a success – the much anticipated Year 3 Sleepover. An afternoon filled with fun, friends, and food was always destined to be a thrill. The boys started the day with their heads in the books, writing their Big Write, and their minds on the music, with the Instrumental Program. Following this period of concentration, they were itching to get into the pool and exert some energy. Being the sole users of the pool was a real experience.

A quick change and the boys were on their way to afternoon tea, team building rotational activities and bed set up. With an ever increasing appetite, the boys (and teachers) attempted to make a dent in the pizza stack for dinner. It was then onwards to bed to relax in front of a flick and a book, before some much needed shut-eye. Day 1 was done.

Day 2 began the same way the previous day ended – slow, calm and friendly. Breakfast was waiting for the boys once they had reorganised their belongings and packed up their bedroom (formerly Wyvern Hall). More activities saw the clock wind down on Day 2 of the Year 3 Sleepover.

An enormous thank you to all the staff who volunteered over the 2 days to make the 2018 Year 3 Sleepover a huge success. The Year 3 students and teachers are grateful for the support so many other staff members offered. A special mention to Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Miles and Mr. Jensen who stayed the night.

The boys and their families should be very proud of the behaviour and conduct the boys displayed as they supported each other and the staff during the event. Now for camp in Term 4….

Year 4 Excursion to the Botanic Gardens & The Australian Museum

Year 4 students visited the Botanic Gardens to explore aboriginal history, plants and animals of an indigenous culture. They discovered how indigenous people used plants for food, medicine, tools and weapons. The diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures were explored through viewing the fascinating exhibitions and artefacts in the Australian Museum.
