A Message from Mr Holden

It has certainly been a busy few days at Wyvern especially with our Literature Festival last week. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the stimulating and exciting activities with a highlight being the Book Character Parade, so well supported by parents. Again, I thank Mrs Barnes for her mighty efforts in organising another successful festival as well as the Wyvern P&F for their financial support of this event.

Last Thursday the P&F hosted a Mother’s Day breakfast which was very much appreciated by both Wyvern mums and their sons. Such functions cannot go ahead without tremendous effort and hard work from parent volunteers. I thank the P&F executive team and especially Sara Flaksbard and Katia Pizzinelli (Tuckshop) for putting on a superb event.

With NAPLAN testing completed for this year I congratulate the students and staff in Year 3 and Year 5 for their calm and measured approach with the testing arrangements this week. We seek to strike a good balance between ensuring the boys are adequately prepared for the NAPLAN testing format whilst providing an environment which is calm and as stress free as possible. Results of the NAPLAN tests are due back late in Term 3. Whilst our results are consistently very strong, we will nonetheless carefully analyse the data to assist us to continually improve our teaching and learning strategies.

Artist of the Week

K – 2 Artists of the Week

Alexander, Lachlan and Flynn have worked hard on their brightly coloured Forces of Nature artwork.  They have successfully incorporated the sun and the ocean into their landscapes. They have shown movement through their thoughtful application of line and the use of warm and cool colours.  Well done boys.

K-2 Visual Art Teacher

3 – 6 Artists of the Week

This week, Artists of the Week come from Year 5 and Year 3.

Year 5 have been researching Historical Selfies during Term 1. They created self portraits using pencil and a sharpie. They researched the types of people that were in Australia during colonization. They then created a ‘mash up’ of themselves dressed as the historical figure, paying close attention to facial hair, uniforms, buttons and the background landscape that the person might have frequented.  The boys then created a phone cover that was unique to them. They were able to think as a designer and make a phone cover that was very modern.

The boys did a fabulous job creating these works.

Congratulations to Joel Miller, Ruben Merani and Abbas Beydoun for their excellent selfies.

Year 3 are starting a unit on Lizards. The boys were asked to observe close up views of lizard eyes and render them in chalk pastel. The boys experimented with blending charcoal and chalk pastel on earth coloured paper. The results of this work is absolutely stunning, and they can be viewed in the hallway outside the Year 3 area.

Congratulations to Cooper Bell, Owen Charles and Harry Cooper for their beautifully rendered Lizard eyes.

3-6 Visual Art Teacher

2019 Newington LitFest

The 2019 Newington LitFest has sadly come to an end. The authors, illustrators, storytellers and performance artists who visited for the festival have left us with wonderful memories and new insights into their books, drawings and stories told.

Here are some thoughts from a few of the Wyvern boys about the authors, performers and storytellers.

K – 2

Matt Cosgrove – Author Talk

  • I liked Matt Cosgrove because he showed us how to draw a robot. Charlie No (KW)
  • I liked how Matt read his book, ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ to us. Paxton Clarke (KW)

Bronwyn Vaughan – Performer

  • I liked when Madame Bon Bon showed us how she used the sewing machine and fabric in the story, ‘Something from Nothing’. Tobias Calvert-Hasan (1Y)
  • I thought the performance was creative and she had us act out some of the parts in the show. Flynn Vogel (1Y)

Kate Forsyth – Storyteller

  • I really liked how Kate had the little treasure box with all her trinkets that helped her tell her stories. Liam Johnston (2S)
  • I liked Kate’s story about the little girl who lived in a small cottage. She tried to help her mother by finding the witch who made porridge. Sam Coull (2S)

Years 3 & 4

Tim Harris – Author Talk

  • Tim was incredible. Henry Eversgard (3M)
  • He changed my mind about reading. He’s the best author I have met. Thomas Bilsdon (3J)

Jules Faber – Illustrator

  • Jules’ illustrations pretty good. I enjoyed how he taught us to draw his character, ‘Weirdo’. Archie Downes (3M)

Kate Forsyth – Author Talk

  • Kate’s stories were extraordinary as well as her back story for her series ‘The Impossible Quest’. Marcus Taylor (3M)

Years 5 & 6

Tristan Bancks – Author Talk

  • Great stories, awesome cliffhangers, with a real life based theme. Tristan is an incredible author and storyteller who is interactive and funny. Marko Nikolic (6K) and Oliver Moore (6B)

Kate Frosyth – Writing Workshop

  • Kate told us you should always start your story with a bang! Hugo Young (5M)
  • She helped me with how to set out my planning for a story. Liam Mitchell-Zancanaro (5M)

Mick Elliott – Author Talk

  • Mick Elliot was very entertaining and super funny. He has excellent stories of funny situations. He involves the crowd a lot.

Sean Choolburra – Performer

  • Sean was funny and interactive with his audience. He also embraced his traditional culture which was interesting to learn about. We liked how he got people onto the stage when they didn’t want to. Even at first if they were’t comfortable being on stage, by the end they really loved it. Bradman Fox (6H) and Jack Duddy (6K)

The Book Parade

The Book Parade was a vibrant display of fabulous story characters from ‘A Time or A Place’ in the literary world. The boys (and parents) excelled themselves in bringing these imaginary book characters to life. As well as being an entertaining and fun event, the Wyvern Book Parade also raised $738.50 for Room to Read, to assist this organisation in bringing books to children in developing countries. Thank you so much to everyone. What a great result!

Spelling Bee

Headmaster, Mr Michael Parker, and well known Australian children’s author, Ms Susanne Gervay, were the adjudicators for our Spelling Bee this year. This nerve-racking, suspenseful event had everyone on the edge of their seats. In the end, Vasili Tzouganatos (5S) was the runner-up and Nathan Chong (6K) the spelling bee champion.

Thank you to everyone in the Wyvern Community for your contribution and support of an incredible 9th Newington Literature Festival.

Kind regards,

Mrs Barnes

CoSpaces

In Term 1, Year 6 students completed their final inquiry project. They were given this scenario:

‘You, and 50 other people, have just been dropped into a second Glade for the very first time, just before nightfall, but not before you witnessed one other young boy become victim to a Griever. Glade 2, hidden by hedges in the maze, is merely a brick wall, surrounding a green grassy field, with wood in the corner. It has many similar materials available to use as the original Glade. You have until daybreak, when the doors open, to convince the other 48 remaining members of Glade 2 of the best plan to survive indefinitely. What will you do?’

In pairs, students started to create their Glade using the online platform CoSpace and code their digital world. They began to arrange their Glade based on their Geography studies of local planning issues. They also started to structure and organise order in their Glade based on their History studies of Government. Students presented final product on Thursday Week 10.  The teachers have been amazed at the enthusiasm and creativity of students when organising and planning their Glade. It has been an interesting and fun inquiry.
