Welcome to the June edition of your ONU enews.

The College is gearing up for a series of building openings in July this year, including the new Drama Centre and the dedicated Year 7 Centre adjacent to the Le Couteur Centre that was refurbished in 2016 . It is absolutely fantastic to see these great state-of-the-art facilities for the benefit of the boys. We all look forward to the removal of the demountable classrooms at the front of the school to be replaced by a new entrance and extra playing facilities.

Current students were treated to a visit, at last week’s assembly, by Trent Zimmerman (ON 1986), Member of the House of Representatives for the Liberal Party of Australia in the seat of North Sydney. Trent is pictured below in middle with Karl Watson (ON 1986) left, ONU Executive member, and Rod Bosman (ON 1978) Director of Community & Development at Newington.

ONU Careers Evening

A big thank you to all the Old Boys who gave up their time to advise our senior boys at the ONU Careers Evening on Tuesday 14 June. There is a separate article in this newsletter with photos and a list of who attended. The evening was a great success and I urge all old boys to consider participating as their time permits over coming years . It is invaluable for our boys to pick up career tips from Old Boys.

Tupou College

Congratulations to Tupou College, Tonga who are celebrating their Sesquicentenary Celebrations. With our rich combined history and the success of six annual tours since 2010, this year’s Tupou College Sesquicentenary Tour to Tonga will be a fantastic opportunity to support our brothers as they celebrate an amazing 150 years.

The ONU has already successfully delivered our Sesquicentenary gift to Tupou College in the form of new rugby goal posts and they are already installed and in use in preparation for the upcoming rugby and service learning tour by Year 10 boys . In addition, I note that over the past 18 months, after much discussion and consultation with our friends in Tonga, it has been decided that as a Sesquicentenary gift, Newington will present Tupou College with a new e-Learning Centre which will provide staff and students with regular access to technology.

The “Newington e-Learning Centre” will be housed in the soon to be completed Sesquicentenary Building on the Tupou College campus, the centre will include the installation of a classroom of 30 desktop computers, whiteboards and data projectors, a hands-on workshop “maker spaces”, as well as long term IT infrastructure, including networking for administration buildings, point-to-point Wi-Fi and the installation of Data projectors in the Moulton Chapel and teaching classrooms.

The Kingdom of Tonga and Newington College have been connected for nearly 150 years. Our relationship has taken many forms and has brought many benefits to our shared communities. The indications are that these connections will continue forever.

Back to Newington Day

A note to all that Back to Newington Day is fast approaching on Saturday 30 July 2016. All welcome for one of the last games of the season against Joeys.

Admissions Policy for Sons and Grandsons of Old Boys

A plea to all old boys with sons or grandsons who are thinking of enrolling them at Newington for future years. Please note, enrolments at the College are at a premium with waiting lists out to 2026 already, so enrol your sons and grandsons before their second birthday in order to gain priority under the eligibility rules, don’t leave it too late.
