From the Archives

The exhibition ‘149: Watching Time Take Form’ (reported elsewhere in this issue) featured both works inspired by material from the College’s Archives collection and collection objects themselves.

One of Aniss Fakhri’s works, Kaleidoscope, used images from one of the gems of our collection, a set of astronomical lantern slides dating from 1866.  The lantern slides belonged to Rev Dr James Egan Moulton, who served as Newington’s first ‘Head Master’ in 1863 and as President from 1893 to 1900.  He served as a Wesleyan missionary in Tonga from 1865 to 1888, establishing Tupou College under the patronage of the King.  We know that he taught astronomy while in Tonga and it is almost certain that he used these lantern slides for this purpose.

24 of the original 38 slides have survived, along with their sturdy box and an accompanying booklet.  The slides are hand painted and each is set in a mahogany panel.  Subjects include the planets, the phases of the moon, comets, constellations, eclipses, the tides, and the Ptolemaic, Pythagorean and Newtonian Systems.

The slides, along with a slide show of their digitised images, are on display in the Chaplain Peter Swain Exhibition Room, on the top floor of the Founders Wing and open from 2-4pm each weekday and at other times by arrangement.

The 70 Club Lunch – 4 September 2012

Spring was in the air and the magnificent weather could not be faulted. It was just made to order!

Morning tea was held on the steps of Centenary Hall and guests gazed out onto the Johnson with students rushing by to get to their next class and the building works in full swing. It is safe to say Newington was seen at its best; alive and buzzing.

A wonderful attendance as 115 guests, which included special guests from the Laying of the Foundation Stones Ceremony that preceded the luncheon, moved into Centenary Hall.

The Annual General Meeting was also held. Congratulations to The 70 Club Committee:

CHAIRMAN John Carroll 1947-52

VICE CHAIRMAN Gilbert Morgan 1947-58

HON SECRETARY Robert Hill 1947-54

HON TREASURER Warren Green 1944-53

COMMITTEE:

Doug Cameron 1940-46
Roger Davidson 1932-40
Richard Garvey 1947-55
Ron Leckie 1931-39
Barry Collins 1949-52
Barry Titcume 1949-51

A special thank you to Reverend Vernon Prowse (ON ’57) for providing Grace, Gil Morgan (ON ’58) for the Loyal Toast, Ron Leckie (ON ’39) for delivering the Toast to Newington College, and to Phil Davis for adding in Any other Business to the AGM agenda with his “crown jewels” joke.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next luncheon on 12 March 2013.

Class of 1982 – 30 Year Reunion

The first day of Spring 2012…

…what a day to have a reunion! The crowd that lined the banks of the Johnson was incredible; there was not a space left of green grass. The crowd cheered the 1st XV, with a heart stopping final 3 minutes as the Black & White’s defence was put to the test resulting in a win against Shore 27 – 24. This placed the 1st XV in the Championship round.

Warwick ‘Gibo’ Gibson (ON ’82) and Rob Tredinnick (ON ’82) led the tour of the College. As current teachers they were able to provide their peer year with an insight to their day to day lives.

Moving into Prescott Hall for the evening, Chaplain Michael Bennett (ON ’87) recognised some faces from the past and led them in grace. The evening was attended by 70 guests; some who had travelled from interstate. The reunion provided the chance for many of the Old Boys to reconnect with their long lost peers.

A special thank you to Bruce Millar (ON ’82) and James Fisher (ON ’82) for coordinating the event. A fantastic day was had by all.

An Update On Proposed Funding Cuts to NSW Private Education

I have been very appreciative of all the support that parents have given in writing to their local Liberal MPs and Ministers, voicing concern regarding the proposed changes to private education funding for 2013.

As you may be aware, in light of widespread outrage the Education Minister has since been forced to water down the original policy. However, the implications remain serious.

The State Government now intends to freeze private education funding at current levels for the next four years. Although we are undoubtedly relieved that the full brunt of the policy changes have been restricted, as a community we must remain wary of the intentions of this Government and make sure they understand our position on this.

Given your already considerable support for all children being educated in NSW, by having your child attend a fee paying school, you may wish to make clear to the State Government your views on this decision. The Parents Council are advocating a number of methods:

  • Seeking meetings with their local state member.
  • Emailing and posting letters to the Premier, Minister Piccoli and local members.
  • Voicing concern on talkback radio and through social media.

To quote from Dr Geoff Newcombe, Executive Director of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, “It is very disturbing that a government would consider an overall funding cut of 8% to non-government schools (6%-53% for individual independent schools) at a time when there is a national focus on additional investment in education to lift teacher quality and improve student outcomes.”

I do remain concerned about the reduction of funding to all forms and systems of education. Cuts to state, private and TAFE education in NSW is extremely short sighted.

I will keep you informed of further communications and decisions for our community.

Yours sincerely
Dr David Mulford

Tournament of Minds

On Sunday 9 September, the Tournament of Minds team competed in the NSW State Finals held at the University of New South Wales. They represented the College and Sydney East in the Maths Engineering division. We are extremely pleased to report that the boys were awarded First Place in their division and now progress to the ‘Australasian Pacific Final’ being held in Perth from the 18-21 October.

The boys performed superbly under pressure in both a long-term and spontaneous challenge. Their task was to construct a device that clearly demonstrated the three symmetrical elements of rotation, translation and reflection. This was then to be incorporated into a 10 minute dramatic presentation, explaining the importance of such a device. The boys demonstrated outstanding collaboration whilst completing their challenge and showed immense respect for the other teams competing. We wish the boys well in their preparation for the Australasian Pacific Final.

Congratulations boys!

Artist of the Week

Weeks 7 and 8

K – 2

Hunter Fadel – Kindergarten

Hunter listened to the story of The Old Man’s Mitten. He was then able to cut out paper mittens and decorate them with woolly patterns using oil pastel. Hunter finished the work with an Edicol dye wash.

Mitchell Cope – Year 2

After exploring the containers and plant shapes and colours in the Kitchen Garden, Mitchell was able to draw a  picture of it. He made effective use of expressive line using water colour paint to complete his work.

Artworks pictured below.

Years 3 – 6

Callum Latham and Thomas Billingham – Year 3

Following Year 3’s excursion to Sydney Harbour and the drawing activities they undertook on site, the Year 3 boys created vibrant paper collages. They experimented with colour mixing to paint a range of secondary and tertiary colours onto paper, then cut and pasted many different textured, printed and metallic papers to add interest and detail to their artworks. The boys also explored techniques to suggest distance and perspective in their collages.

Black Belt – Hugo Emery

On Monday 3rd September, Hugo Emery become the youngest member of the Kwan Ki Do school in Erskineville to achieve his Black Belt. Only 4 Black Belts including Hugo’s have been earned at the school over the past 10 years making this a remarkable achievement for a 10 year old.

Hugo has been attending the Kwan Ki Do school for 5 years which teaches a combination of Taekwondo and Hapkido (self defence discipline).

As part of his 45 minute grading Hugo had to break 8 pieces of wood, do countless kicking and punching combinations, 8 Hapkido self defence movements and was asked to show 3 of his 8 patterns all with 18 movements in them. He also had to present to his master a 500 word essay on the History of Tae Kwan Do.

Brilliant grading and fantastic result. Well done Hugo.

Wyvern Boys in Winning Team in U10’s Grand Final

Congratulations to the six Wyvern boys who were a part of the winning U10’s Petersham team – The Shammies (Hugo Emery, Cooper Davey, Thomas Ilinkovski, Justin Martin, Asher Baykitch & Tom Larkings) These Wyvern boys played in the Grand Final for the U10 G’s against Mosman and came out on top with a 31-24 win. The Shammies were the minor premiers for the U10G’s for 2012 and capped off a great season with a nail biting grand final win on Sunday at Keirle Park, Manly – making Father’s Day all the more special for the dads. It was a hard fought battle between the two teams and it could have gone either way. The Shammies dug deep, defended brilliantly and with great passing of the ball managed to secure the championship.

The game was played with great sportsmanship and team spirit. All the boys should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Wyvern Boys Runner-Up in Grand Final

Congratulations to Callum Latham (Yr 3), Eden Horne (Yr 4) and Cassie Horne (Yr 3) who played in the U10 Division H Sydney Junior Grand Final on September 2nd for Hunters Hill U10 Blues. The game was held at Manly against Chatswood. Hunters Hill U10 Blues played very well and almost got over the top of a much larger team, but eventually went down 17-12 in a very close match. The club rugby has been a great learning experience for the boys and they should be very proud of their efforts.

Try Scoring Whiz – George Evans (2L)

George Evans has been a try scoring whiz for the Lane Cove Tigers this season while playing in the North Sydney Junior League. The quick stepping Evans has demonstrated his natural ability by nabbing an incredible 57 tries in the U7 mini League. It is the most tries scored by an U7 rugby league junior throughout Australia in 2012 and an example of George’s blistering pace and evasive skills.

A Message from Mr Holden

Residential Visits

Year 5 and Year 6 have recently taken part in 3 day residential excursions – Year 5 to Bathurst and Year 6 to Canberra. It is clear that students made the most of the many exciting activities planned for them. I am especially pleased to have received such good reports of the boys’ excellent conduct during their time away from school. I thank the staff members who accompanied the residential excursions for their fine work in looking after your sons so well.

Class Allocation 2013

The process for allocating students to next year’s classes is thorough and starts in Term 4. As part of this process some parents may feel that they can assist by offering information about their son. Should you wish to express a view about the style of classroom management you feel may best suit your son (e.g. particularly nurturing or greater structure). I invite you to contact me via email before the end of this term. Please note that I cannot consider requests received after this deadline.

Please note that requests for particular teachers or for a teacher based on his or her gender will not be considered in this process and be mindful that whilst we are receptive to parental input, the school has the final say in decisions regarding class placement for 2013.

Aquatics Program

A quick reminder that our Aquatics Program for all classes starts in Term 4 and will run for the first 5 weeks. More detailed information will be sent home very shortly, however should you have any further question please feel free to contact Mr Jamie Martin our PDHPE teacher – j.martin@newington.nsw.edu.au

Tournament of Minds

Our Tournament of Minds team is to be congratulated for their stunning success at the NSW State Finals. The team now go on to represent NSW in the Australasian Pacific Final. Well done all!

Last Day of Term 3

A final reminder that the last day of Term 3 for Wyvern students is Thursday 20 September. Boys return to school for Term 4 on Monday 8 October wearing their summer school uniform. I thank students, staff and parents for a most purposeful term.

Year 6 Canberra Excursion

Student Recounts of their Canberra Excursion

Parliament House – Matthew Pease

We stood in the entrance of the second most expensive place in the southern hemisphere, the Australian Parliament House. The building was, in itself, a grand design. According to the guide, whom followed us around and gave us information, the building cost billions to make. The building was enormous, it stretched over an extremely large distance, and the flag, which flew so brilliantly on the top of the building, was the size of two buses.

To get into the building, we had to pass through the security, which was a series of metal detectors and security guards. Any items which we had in our pockets had to be placed into the metal detectors, we then would walk through another metal detector, this one checking we were not hiding any items.

We got through security quite swiftly and moved into the first room. It had great designs on the floor, and pillars made of marble. The walls were solid and made of more marble. We moved up the stairs and into an open area with portraits of important people in Australian history, like prime ministers, governor generals, and the queen. Some of these people were: Queen Elizabeth II, John McEwen, Robert Menzies, and Gough Whitlam.

We then moved as a group into the elevator, which took us to the top floor. We stayed up there for a while, we had to wait because we had arrived early, but most of us ran around and took pictures. The flag, up close, was amazing. It’s size was colossal, and it was held up by a giant metal pole. There was a sign that clearly stated ‘do not step on the grass, fine: $10,000’ I found that it was humorous as boys stepped on the grass without knowledge of the punishments. There were security cameras everywhere and they probably caught some of the boys walking on the grass.

We then moved back down the elevator and into a room, where we were given a drink, and a muesli bar. Once finished, we broke off into groups and moved around parliament house. My group first travelled through the vast corridors to get to the upper house, also known as the Senate. Our tour guide gave us a quick explanation of how the senate worked and told us who was currently in the Senate.

We moved to the lower house, also known as the House of Representatives. Our tour guide again gave us an explanation of how the lower house worked, and let us take pictures. I was hoping that parliament would be sitting on the day, but to my disappointment our Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, was not there on that day. We then travelled back into the courtyard of parliament house where we waited to be taken back in.

It was late at night and parliament was closed. But we were allowed to enter and we moved into some of the substitute parliament rooms. Once there, we commenced a mock debate, we picked our party leaders and thought up speeches, the government was arguing that the school day should be lengthened to 5:00 PM, while the opposition argued against that. Surprisingly, the opposition won and the bill was discarded.

Finally, we finished, and left the parliament house to get back on our bus and move to our cabins. It was a great experience and I enjoyed it a lot. It was probably one of the best experiences that I will have in my life.

Laying of the Wreath – Jack Alscher

Wind, rain, and cold encountered the Newington College spirit on the third day of our Canberra Excursion, as Year 6 laid the wreath to give our bit to the ANZAC souls who fought for Australia. It was unpleasant weather, but nothing could dampen our fierceness to repay those who fought for us. We stood outside the Australian War Memorial, with thoughts of what we had just experienced replaying in our mind, and all that we had learned, we faced the Remembrance Stone with determination.

Mr Morphew said a Prayer as the two School Captains from Lindfield and Wyvern walked in unison forward, laying the brightly coloured wreath, a bundle of white flowers against the grey of the sky.

We all stood silent, just for a minute, our force conquering the weather and just for a minute, the rain stopped, and we remembered the ANZAC’s who died for us. Wyvern and Lindfield were a united force that day when we remembered the ANZAC’s and nothing could separate us.

We all enjoyed the War Memorial, but probably the best thing was when we could go back inside, away from the weather! We left our wreath standing there, radiant and proud, the ribbon fluttering wearing the words “Lest We Forget”.

Old Parliament House – Dale Schlaphoff

We entered the Old Parliament House also known as The Australian Museum of Democracy through the side entrance. We were ushered into a large, polished room filled with chairs. On the chairs was a pair of white gloves, which we were asked to put on. Our 2 guides explained that the gloves were used to protect the ornaments and objects from the oil found on our hands.

After we were told some information about the historical building we split up into 2 groups. My group went off into the discovery section. This room was filled with information on every prime minister to be in office in Australia. Under each of the 27 prime ministers lay a highly sensitive touchscreen. We were requested to move into groups with a maximum of 3. One representative from each group was given a card to activate the touch screens. The touchscreen gave a quiz on each prime minister and then directed us across the room to a different prime minister.

Parliament House – Nico Maclean

On 5 September, our first day in Canberra, we visited the current Parliament House. After seeing it so many times on TV it was amazing just actually being there.

The flag (which is as big as a double-decker bus) fluttered high in the wind above us as we looked off into the distance down ANZAC Parade all the way to The War Memorial. Off to the left was the magnificent, colourful and alien-like Telstra Tower. The weather was quite chilly!

Inside were the fascinating chambers. The Senate (the Upper House) and the House of Representatives (the Lower House). The first place we visited was the Senate. This red masterpiece contains 76 senators when Parliament sits. The red represents the blossoms of the eucalyptus tree. The colour is lighter the higher you look and deeper the lower you look.

Next we went to the House of Representatives. This place had lush Green colours everywhere. Like the Senate the colours change from lighter to darker depending on where you looked. This chamber is where Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott sit. It contains 150 ministers and politicians when Parliament is in session.

Wyvern Faith Matters

Growing Strong Roots

Philip Gulley writes, “Growing up I had an old neighbour named Dr. Gibbs. When he wasn’t saving lives he was planting trees. The good doctor had some interesting theories on plant husbandry. He came from the ‘no pain, no gain’ school of horticulture. He never watered his new trees. He said watering plants spoiled them; if you water them, each successive generation will grow weaker. So you have to make things tough for them and weed out the weenie trees early on. He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of moisture. He’d plant an oak, and instead of watering it, every morning he’d beat it with a rolled up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! He said it made the trees pay attention. Dr. Gibbs died couple of years after I left home. Every now and again I’d walk by his house and look at those trees he planted twenty-five years ago. They are granite strong, big and robust. They wake up every morning and beat their chests and drink their coffee black. I planted a couple of trees a few years back. Carried water to them for a solid summer, sprayed them, prayed over them. Three years of coddling has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Funny thing about those trees of Dr. Gibbs, adversity seems to have benefited them in ways comfort and ease never could.”

“May your roots go deep down into God’s marvelous love.” (Ephesians 3:17)
