The commencement of summer sport provides an opportunity to look at the early days of cricket at Newington.

We know from contemporary accounts that boys have played cricket from the start of the school at Newington House, Silverwater.  The ‘green’ was close to the main buildings: it was natural that this was where cricket and other games were played.  The senior and junior students were reported to have had their own playing spaces.

Much of the cricket played would have been informal matches organised within the school.  However, Newington was soon fielding teams to play not only against other schools but also against local clubs.  School opponents included Camden College, a Congregational school in Newtown, St Mark’s at Macquarie Fields and the Calder House School in Redfern.  The clubs included Balmain Surrey, the Albert Club (reportedly the premier club of the day), Parramatta and ‘a Sydney Eleven’.  Regular GPS competition did not start until 1893.

Matches were irregular.  It was reportedly ‘…rather a journey to get to or from Newington early enough to play a two-innings match.’  Parramatta was five miles away by steamer, and Sydney fourteen miles.

An important asset for Newington was Joseph Coates, who taught at the school from 1864 to 1872, returning later as Head Master.  A noted member of the ‘2^nd Alberts’, he was reportedly a good all-rounder and left-hand bowler.  With cricket organised at Newington as a club, he and other Masters could play for the school, as could former students.  Two prominent cricketers to emerge from Newington in the 1860s were Edwin ‘Ted’ Evans and Tom Garrett, both of whom subsequently played for Australia.

Illustrated is the Newington team from around 1870, in our earliest cricket image.  The photograph was taken on the verandah of Newington House.  Several members are wearing Cadet uniform caps.  The man in the plaid shirt is probably Joseph Coates.

Artist of the Week

Years 3 – 6

Artist of the Week is Lachlan Watson of Year 6. Inspired by his study of dragons from a range of cultures, Lachlan created his own “Wyvern” dragon front and side views in charcoal. He employed new charcoal drawing and tonal rendering techniques to suggest 3D mass and surface effects.

Art News

Year 4 have been very happily taping and painting, hammering and glue gunning in the process of creating 3D mixed media abstracts. These experimental artworks are inspired by the boys’  study of artists Piet Mondrian, Robert Klippel  – and machines: specifically computer motherboards!

SRC Creates Room to Read Success

Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General once said “Literacy unlocks the door to learning through life” and this is a motto that the Student Representatives and the Wyvern school body have taken to heart in Term 3. This term the SRC put their full support behind the ‘Room to Read’ program. This organisation was established by former Microsoft employee and ‘overworked executive’ John Wood, who, on his travels to Nepal in the late 1990’s, was saddened by the lack of libraries and reading materials available in communities, particularly for children. Since conception, the organisation has built over 13,000 libraries, 1500 schools and has funded the publishing of more than 11.5 million books worldwide. All books are published by native authors, in native language and about local culture.

In Term 3 the SRC representatives promoted the message “Give up to give back” to raise money for Room to Read. Boys and teachers were encouraged to give up one small item in their day (a chocolate bar, treat, coffee) and donate the money instead to the fundraiser. Many boys gave up one thing, many gave up many things. Importantly, everyone’s contributions added up to an impressive total.  Through their generous  donations and with school community support, the SRC was very proud to announce that they raised a total of $3321.30. As part of the “Stubbies World Change Challenge” Stubbies agreed to match all totals raised by schools bringing our total up to a whopping $6642.60!

The SRC have done a magnificent job of promoting this wonderful cause and three representatives were excited to present Room to Read advocate, Alex  Loveridge, with a cheque for the total at the final Term 3 assembly.

Special thanks to our wonderful Librarian, Mrs Barnes for her drive, enthusiasm and support of the SRC and this wonderful cause. Another big thank you to Mrs Shugg and Mrs Bourke, whose artistic skills made our Room to Read ‘Donate-O-Meter’ come to life.

Finally, well done to the Wyvern boys, whose enthusiasm and generosity made this fundraiser a huge success.

WELCOME BACK

Well the holidays flew past quickly and isn’t it great to be back in that routine of packing lunches and organising sports bags! I hope everyone enjoyed their time together with family and friends and you are looking forward to the last term for 2012.

AGM

Wyvern P&F will hold their Annual General Meeting on Thursday 18^th October at 7.00pm in Wyvern Hall. This meeting will see a review of the previous year and the re-election of the committee. A member of the Executive Committee stands in office for 2 years so most of the positions will be renominated. If you wish to be a part of the committee to help guide the Parent body through the school, please come along and nominate yourself for a position of General Member etc. Click here for a nomination form.

AQUATICS PROGRAM

In Term 4 the Aquatics Program runs for 5 weeks . Your son will require:

• Swimmers – Black with Newington
• Goggles – purchase your own (also available to purchase from the front office)
• Towel – bring your own
• Small bag to place all wet items in – Haversack available at the Uniform Shop – $30

The personalised towels are on the way and will be delivered directly to your son’s classroom.

HELP IN THE UNIFORM SHOP

On Monday 22^nd October and Tuesday 23^rd October, Orientation for 2013 will commence. We require assistance in the Uniform Shop from 9.00 am until 12.00pm on both days. If you can help, even for an hour, your knowledge and assistance would be greatly appreciated. FATHER & SON CAMPS

The 3-6 Father and Son camp held on 22^nd & 23^rd September was a great success. The efforts of the parents involved in the camp made the operation run a little more smoothly. I would like to thank Philip Argy (Snack Bar Manager), George Griziotis (Camp Fire Maintenance) and David Mills (Activity Coordinator) for the extra assistance they put into the camp. As volunteers, we only take payment in kindness and enjoyment to see the boys have fun. Look out for dates next year as we are locking them in now.

Wyvern Faith Matters

Children on the Meaning of Love

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, “What does love mean?”

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.”  (Rebecca- age 8)

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.  You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.” (Billy – age 4)

“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.” (Terri – age 4)

“Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.” (Bobby – age 7)

“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.” (Nikka – age 6)

“When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.” (Karen – age 7)

And the final one — Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge.  The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.  The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.  Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry”

A Message from Mr Holden

Welcome back to the final term of 2012. It is hard to imagine where the year has gone! Looking back, students can be extremely proud of their many achievements across a wide range of activities. The final challenge for all is to maintain the very high standards set thus far and to make this last busy term the best one yet.

Staffing Update

I formally welcome Ms Caoimhe McMillan to the Wyvern music teaching team. Ms McMillan will be teaching music lessons to a number of classes as well as playing a lead role in our woodwind and brass programs.  Mrs Michelle Brixon has moved to a class teaching role this term and will be looking after the boys in 5H (now 5M). Finally, we welcome Mr Charlie Spelling from the Eltham School in London who joins us as a Gap student for the next 6 months.

Year 2-3 Transition Meeting

On Wednesday 17 October at 7:00pm there will be a special meeting for parents of current Year 2 students who make the transition into Year 3 next year. We have held this meeting for the last few years and past parents have indicated to us that they have found this to be a useful forum to assist them in preparing their sons as they enter a new phase of the school. At the meeting our current Year Three Team Leader, Mrs Melanie Bryden, will provide information about how we cater for some of the academic, social and emotional challenges students will face next year. In addition Ms Alina Belshaw (Music Team Leader) and Mr Neil Brunton (Wyvern Sports Master) will talk about the compulsory instrumental and sport programs that all students are involved in from Year 3.

P & F

I thank all parent volunteers involved in the planning, preparation and organisation of the many excellent parent events held this year. I also thank the hardworking P & F executive, under the leadership of Mrs Julie Gigg,  for their dedication and commitment given to benefit the Wyvern community. Please note that the Parents & Friends AGM is on October 18. I do hope you can spare the time to attend this important meeting and if at all possible take an active role in the Wyvern P & F. There is no doubt that an enthusiastic P & F team benefits your sons in so many ways.

Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 Presentation Ceremonies

This year we will once again hold special end of year presentation ceremonies in the more intimate surrounds of the Wyvern Hall for students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. On these occasions students will receive individual merit awards and will perform musical items. Therefore attendance at Wyvern’s Annual Prize Giving on Thursday 6 December for students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 is not compulsory, although families with students in these year groups are very welcome to attend. The dates for these ceremonies are:

Kindergarten:  Monday 26 November at 9:00am

Year 1:  Tuesday 27 November at 9:00am

Year 2:  Wednesday 28 November at 9:00am

Finally, we wish our Tournament of Minds (TOM) team every success as they compete in the Australasian Pacific Finals (Science and Engineering) next week in Perth.
