SRC Fundraiser – The Kasupe Goat Farm Project

This semester the Wyvern Student Representative Council are raising money to support a very worthwhile project based in the Kasupe community in Malawi, Africa. This small African community has benefited in many ways from the determined efforts of Mosman local and long-time friend of Wyvern Head, Mr Ian Holden; Margie Bowen-Jones.

After visiting the Kasupe community, Mrs Bowen-Jones has worked tirelessly to raise funds that have been used to build new classrooms and a library as well as improve existing classrooms, to install a bore pump for much needed water and to establish a now thriving goat farm. The community relies on the goat farm as a self-sustainable source of income. The goats produce skins, meat, milk and manure that are sold and profit the locals.

At a recent 3-6 Assembly, Mrs Bowen-Jones spoke to the boys about the Kasupe community and its needs. She also shared photos of the community with the boys which gave them a view into ‘a day in the life of a Kasupe local’.

The Wyvern boys are excited about this term’s “Adopt-a-Goat” fundraiser where boys will be encouraged to raise money to purchase goats for the Kasupe community.

HEADING TO THE FINISH LINE FOR TERM 1

As we complete week 7 of Term 1, we should all take time to reflect back on all the things we have completed in this first term. Small achievements such as, learning to tie shoelaces or ties, knowing that it takes an extra 10 minutes on a Friday to get to school or even meeting new families that will be around for a life time. Discover what is possible, is the college mantra and I think we all discover things ourselves everyday with our children. Take the time and have some fun!

With having fun in mind… the Women of Wyvern dinner is on this Friday night and WOW what a response. Tickets were sold out 2 weeks prior to  the event and then we had to beg the venue to add an extra table to accommodate all that wanted to attend. Thank you to Sally, Tahnee and Sam from Year 4 who have been pulling the event together by having lunch at different venues, checking the wine, listening to the entertainment and smelling the flowers. With all of that research, it is going to be a smashingly good night. I hope everyone has gone out and purchased a new outfit for feeling WOW (good excuse for a new dress!) Looking forward to seeing everyone in your finest.

The Literature Festival is coming up so encourage your sons to make the most of  the authors and discussions that the school is providing. Wyvern P&F supports this valuable week by a contribution to the College for the speakers etc so in a small way we are helping the boys get that “love of reading”. Looking forward to the Book Parade which is always a fun day so get out your creative juices!

There are still some tickets available to the Newington 150 Years in Sport to be held on Friday 22nd March. If you have any donations such as a beauty service, weekend away, wine, dinner venues, please send me an email so I can discuss further options. There will be lucky balloons and I hear there are some great prizes available. Please send details to:

Julie Gigg – djgigg@gmail.com

Shorty after the Easter break, we will be holding The Great Garden Party – Friday 5th April. Each year group has been assigned a stall for the afternoon of fun. Please contact your class parent for details of how you can assist. There will be “Smash a Jaffa”, decorate a plant pot, make your own creative cupcake, second hand books and yummy, yummy, yummy, CHOCOLATE COATED STRAWBERRIES. Homemade lemonade, tea/coffee and water will be available to wash it all down with. Click here for Class Parent lists.

A great afternoon of carefree fun at school.

In Term 2, all the boys are required to wear winter uniform. This consists of grey blazer, long sleeve striped shirt and winter weight shorts. Come down to the Uniform Shop for all of these items prior to the end of end Term 1. The Uniform Shop will not be open during the school holiday break. There are also many other items available, such as Newington badges to reward your son in areas that he may have achieved great results or just applied himself well. Badges include rugby, swimming, music, basketball and Football (soccer).

If you have any feedback, questions, comments about the school or the P&F, please contact myself, my email door is always open.

Important NAPLAN Information

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

In May 2013, as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), national tests will be held in literacy and numeracy for all students in Australia at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The tests will be completed between Tuesday 14 May and Thursday 16 May 2013.  Friday 17 May is scheduled as a ‘catch-up day’ for students who were absent on a test day. The format will be identical for both Years 7 and 9.  On Tuesday 14 May boys will complete a 45 minute test on Language Conventions (comprising spelling, grammar and punctuation) and a 40 minute test on Writing.  On Wednesday 15 May they will complete a 65 minute test on Reading.  Finally on Thursday 16 May they will complete an 80 minute Numeracy test (comprising number, algebra, functions and patterns, space, measurement and chance and data).  This test will be broken into two 40 minute sessions.  Students will be able to use calculators in the first session but they will not be allowed the use of a calculator in the second session.

All students are expected to participate in the tests.  Students may be considered for exemption only if:

  • they have been in Australia for less than 12 months and have a language background other than English;
  • they have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

Students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/guardian.  This is a matter for consideration by individual parents in consultation with the Headmaster. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.  If you have concerns in regard to your son’s participation in NAPLAN please contact Ms Julia Shea, Deputy of Stanmore/Head of Learning and Teaching, as soon as possible.

Access to disability provisions for these tests should be discussed with Mrs Rebecca Panagopoulos by phoning 9568 9527. Provisions which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom will be provided.

Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at http://www.naplanforparentsnsw.com.au

Parents will receive information on their child’s performance through the individual reports that will be compiled for each student.  The tests will provide information on how students are progressing against national benchmarks. Results will be posted home as soon as they become available. This is usually in late September.

ONU Golf Day

The recent ONU Golf Day at the Lakes Club was a great success, despite the challenging weather conditions. Old Boys, current parents, grandparents and staff engaged in friendly yet competitive rivalry on the greens contesting one of Newington oldest trophies, the H.S. Rofe Trophy as well as the Alumni Challenge Trophy to raise funds for the ONU Depression initiative.

After presenting the Alumni trophy to the team from 1978, James Jordan (ON ’81), ONU President said “Not only did we get to play at the prestigious Lakes Golf Course but we are exceptionally fortunate to have the support of generous sponsors who enable us to make a contribution in a very real way and I thank them sincerely.” He also thanked the ONU Golf Day organising committee, Ian Mayer (ON ’81), David Gillard (ON ’92) and Nigel Watson (ON ’93) for their exceptional contributions.

With generous donations of prizes and auction items from current parents and Old Boys, including Martin Wright from Srixon Sports Australasia, Con Dedes (ON ’87) from Dedes Group, Richard Spira (ON ’81) from Agressor, Ian Mayer (ON 81) from Chatswood Toyota and Adam Peruch (ON ’81) from Channel 9, over $17,500 was raised.

From the Archives: Newington’s first advertisement

On 12 March 1863, among the shipping notices, entertainment advertisements (‘Signor Ohio: the inimitable SWISS WARBLER, whose imitations of birds and animals are unrivalled’), and personal notices (‘Notice to the public: I, JOHN BURNS of Botany, will not be answerable for debts my Wife, JANE BURNS, may contract after this date’), the Sydney Morning Herald published an advertisement placed by ‘J Allen Manton, Principal’ of the ‘Collegiate Institution, Newington House (late Blaxland’s), Parramatta River’.

The advertisement announced that the ‘spacious and beautifully situated premises’ were now undergoing thorough repair and would be opened as a school the following July.  The same advertisement would appear each week until just before the school’s opening.

Because of its location, the new school would initially be entirely a boarding school.  The fees were to be 50 guineas ($105 in today’s currency) per annum, to cover ‘Board and education’, plus 4 guineas ($8.40) for washing and a guinea ($2.10) for medical attendance.  Fees were payable quarterly, in advance.

The advertisement set out the articles that each student was expected to bring with him: a silver fork and spoon, two pairs of sheets, two pillow cases and six towels.  Each was to be marked with the student’s name in full.

Six weeks’ notice was required for the withdrawal of a student; otherwise half a quarter’s fees would be charged.

Despite the new school’s connection with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, the advertisement noted that it would be open to the sons of parents of all religious denominations.

Online Tuckshop
Members of the Wyvern Parents and Friends Executive are currently trialling a new online ordering facility for the Wyvern Tuckshop. Initial feedback is that the system is working well, with only some minor modifications required. Once the trial phase has been completed, hopefully in the next two weeks, we will offer this facility to all Wyvern parents. Further information about the Wyvern Online Tuckshop will be sent out before the end of Term 1.  Please note that parents will need to log on to Newington Spaces to use this facility; therefore if you have not done so already, please do set up an account, click here.
