Artist of the Week

K – 2

Matthew Torrible in Year 1 painted a wonderful view of a rock pool remembering the mural Year 1 created for the Library. He added finely detailed crabs, seaweed, starfish and more with watercolour pencil. The final composition was pleasing to look at and showed Matthew’s consistent and careful effort.

James Hewish of Year 2 neatly wove paper strips together remembering the under-over technique. The finished work created the idea of brightly coloured optical illusion.

Years 3 – 6

Aaron Mueller in Year 4 created a junk assemblage sculpture, inspired by the complex patterns and structures of computer motherboards and by the art of Piet Mondrian.   Aaron first used painter’s tape to define geometric shapes on a wooden board then applied acrylic paint and used indelible marker to define the shapes. He attached his found objects with nails, horseshoe staples and hot glue.

Wenhao Fan in Year 5 created his “Desperate Miner” sculpture by manipulating wire to create a human figure shape, posing the wire form and then covering the armature with layers of plaster bandages. He coated his figurine with several layers of carefully applied acrylic paint.

Tournament of Minds

On 18th – 21st October, the Tournament of Minds team travelled to Perth to represent NSW in the Maths Engineering division at the Australasian Pacific Finals. The boys were once again required to complete a 3 hour ‘lockdown’ challenge and respond creatively to a spontaneous question. The boys collaborated outstandingly and produced a very pleasing dramatic performance and mathematical device to respond to the question. It was a very tough competition pool with teams from across Australia and also Hong Kong and New Zealand. They were unsuccessful in receiving a place in these finals, however, their exemplary attitude and determination throughout the competition did not go unnoticed.

These seven boys from Years 5 and 6 learnt a great deal of resilience, as ideas were embraced and constructively criticised by teammates. They needed to develop strategies to incorporate the ideas of all members into their responses, which was a challenge in itself with so many divergent thinkers.

The boys should be extremely proud of their achievement as it is a very difficult competition to progress through. Their parents and I are exceptionally proud of both their response on the day and the behaviour they demonstrated whilst in Perth. The boys were continually commended by other teams and members of the public for their manners and positive sportsmanship throughout the Tournament proceedings.

A huge congratulation to all of the boys. You may not have come back to school with medals but you certainly won the admiration of your parents, peers and teachers. What an extraordinary achievement for you all.

Their Australasian Pacific Final challenge question:

“Not What It Seems”

The need has arisen for a special type of device. The device is to be used to perform a particular task, however, it is also very important that it appears to be something other than what it really is. The team has been called in to design and build the device. The team is to decide on the purpose of the device and build it in such a way that it fulfils its intended function, although it appears to be something different.

During the 10 minutes presentation the team must: explain who needs the device and why the device is needed, explain why the device must appear to be something other than what it is, explain what task the device must perform, how its design makes this possible, and demonstrate the use of the device to perform its required task and finally show how the device has been designed to make it appear to be something different from what it really is.

Wyvern Faith Matters

The Victorious Limp

Virtuoso violinist Pinchas Zukerman was giving a master class to a group of young artist who had come to the Aspen Music Festival from the four corners of the world. The auditorium was filled with their peers, distinguished teachers and performers; the atmosphere was electric. To each of the talented performers Zukerman offered friendly advice and encouragement, discussing their playing in detail, and invariably picking up his own violin to demonstrate finer points of technique and interpretation.

Finally came the turn of a young musician who performed brilliantly. When the applause subsided, Zukerman complimented the artist, then walked over to his own violin, caressed it, tucked it under his chin, paused a long moment, and then, without playing a note or uttering a word gently placed it back in its case. Once more, the applause broke out, and this time it was deafening, in recognition of the master, who could pay such a gracious compliment.

After his triple denial of Jesus, what future would have awaited the disciple Peter if he had to depend on my patience, understanding, and compassion? Instead of a shrug, sneer, slap or curse, Jesus responded with the subtlest and most gracious compliment imaginable. He named Peter the leader of the faith community and entrusted him with authority to preach the Good News.

The limping Peter’s betrayal of Jesus, like so many of our own moral relapses and refusals of grace, was not a terminal failure but the occasion for painful personal growth in fidelity.

A Message from Mr Holden

Tournament of Minds

I congratulate the students of the Wyvern Tournament of Minds team. Over the past weekend they competed in the Australasian and Pacific Regional Finals in the Maths and Engineering category. Once again, their performance was of exceptional calibre and whilst not placed, they can take great pride in being named one of the top 8 NSW teams. I acknowledge and thank Ms Christie McMillan for her outstanding work with the team. I also thank parents for their tremendous support.

School Leaders 2013

At this time of the term we consider which of our current Year 5 students have the potential to undertake a number of Wyvern student leadership positions for next year. The student school leader selection process is extremely thorough with every staff member and student (Year 3- 6) having some input. We use the following criteria to help us to form our judgments.

  • Capacity as a Role Model
How the student conducts himself on a day to day basis consistent with the school’s values of respect, care for others and service to the community. Furthermore, how the student participates in all aspects of school life including a strong contribution to co-curricular activities.
  • Presentation Skills
The ability of the student to speak confidently and persuasively to different audiences: e.g. large and small groups of peers and adults, in both formal and informal settings and within prepared and impromptu speaking situations.
  • Care For Others
How the student demonstrates a service ethic and a capacity to think of others: e.g. selfless behaviour, assistance provided to others and the capacity to work as part of a team. In other words, evidence of ‘servant leadership’.

Using these criteria we select a School Captain, two School Vice Captains, School Officers, House Captains and House Vice Captains.

In addition, there are a number of opportunities for Year 6 students to take up various monitor roles next year. Information about these will be given to the boys at the start of next year.  It is important to emphasise that all Year 6 students are leaders in the school and therefore should be excellent role models for the rest of the school. As such I have extremely high expectations about their conduct and contribution. A leadership training day for the whole Year 6 cohort is planned in Term 1, 2012.

Year 5 iPad Program

Finally, current Year 4 parents will soon receive a detailed information pack about the College’s ‘Bring Your Own Device” scheme for 2013. Current Year 5 students will retain their iPad for use in Year 6 in 2013. Please do feel free to contact Mr Andrew Wood (Deputy Y4 – Y6) should you have any IT related questions. awood@newington.nsw.edu.au
