End of Term Library Books

Week 6 will be the last week for borrowing books from the Library. All books should be returned by the end of Week 7 so that stock-take can begin the following week.

Each Wyvern library book has a barcode like this on the back cover of the book.

Books that have been damaged or lost over the past year will need to be paid for in these next few weeks. Letters regarding these books will be sent home to parents. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Mrs Joanne Barnes

Reed Nottage: Selected in NSW Country Junior Basketball Team
In an effort to improve his basketball knowledge and skills, Reed has attended several basketball camps this year conducted by NSW Country Basketball. He attended trials at Wollongong during the October holidays for selection into the U/14 NSW Country Junior Boys Basketball team. Reed was successful in gaining selection and will now play in a National competition called the ‘Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup’ held in Albury in January against other state teams of Australia.

Understandably he is very excited to be selected in this team and his training this year with the Newington senior school boys has certainly helped him to reach this level. Well done Reed.

Samuel Perivolaris Takes a Hat Trick
Last Sunday Samuel Perivolaris who plays for the Concord Gold Briars U/12’s in the south eastern club cricket took a hat trick, finishing with 3-7 from 4 overs. Well done Samuel.

Athan Diniotis makes the Australian U12’s squad for the Australian Futsal Association
Athan Diniotis has been chosen to represent the Australian U12’s squad for the Australian Futsal Association to compete in New Zealand. The squad was selected from the Australian National Championships held earlier in the year, in which Athan’s NSW side won.

The Australian team will be departing our shores on November 16, travelling through the North Island playing various NZ regional sides from Wellington to Auckland for 2 weeks. We look forward to the photos and stories when he arrives back on Nov 28.

Sydney to the Gong Ride

On Sunday 4 November 2012, Jason Archis, Harry Clarke and Bryn Williams took part in the Sydney to Wollongong bike ride. The boys each rode 60km to raise money to support people affected by multiple sclerosis. Jason, Harry and Bryn should be commended on being amongst the youngest participants in the ride, an effort that was applauded appropriately by fellow riders and cheering spectators. The boys have every reason to be proud of themselves – not only did they finish the ride in a very timely fashion, but in doing so they showed tremendous generosity of spirit. Together, the boys raised almost $2000 for MS. Congratulations Jason, Harry and Bryn!!!!

New Waratah: Ben Volavola

Newington’s Ben Volavola (ON ‘10) has recently secured the last spot in the Waratahs squad for 2013. It’s a fantastic achievement for such a young player. Ben’s representative honours include Australia U20s and NSW A. He backed up his inaugural year in the Sydney Premiership this year with a series of standout performances in the Shute Shield this season after making his debut in round 12. Ben is a highly skilful player who is able to play fullback and flyhalf. While at Newington, Ben was instrumental in leading the change of culture to the College’s senior rugby program.

The Salvation Army Christmas Tree

Please support the Salvation Army in their efforts to ensure that needy families receive gifts at Christmas Time.

Wyvern’s SRC Year 2 students helped decorate the sparkling, colourful Christmas tree in Wyvern foyer. Each year we ask Wyvern families to support this cause by donating a gift to a needy family.  All gifts should be visible and wrapped in clear cellophane paper and labelled either boy/girl and for what age group as this allows for easy identification of gifts and then left under the Christmas Tree. In the past our students have taken pride in giving to those who are less fortunate. The Salvation Army will hand these gifts our to needy families so that they too can celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day. Please give generously so that these families feel special.

News from Alumni, Archives and Foundation

AISUSA Foundation Event

Saturday 6 October saw Newington yet again as the most represented school at the Australian Independent Schools USA Foundation Event (www.aisusafoundation.com). There were attendees who are Old Boys, future parents and even one current parent! Heartfelt memories were stretched (yes they were all in the First XV, Rowed the First VIII, Bassoonist in the Orchestra and managed to be Dux), smiles were large and the Newington Brotherhood was extended to all no matter what the Alumni Year.

That morning Newington secured the ‘AUSUSA Foundation Nick Farr-Jones Touch Rugby Trophy’ in Central Park – even though only Newingtonians turned up bar one Riverview Old Boy!

Exam Time

The months of October and November are, perhaps more than anything else, exam time. This has not really changed since the College’s establishment in 1863, but the nature of the exams and the systems they are part of have changed a great deal.

Initially, the end of year examinations were purely an internal affair. In 1867 the Junior and Senior Public Examinations were established, as part of the first set of education reforms of Sir Henry Parkes. The examinations were set and marked by the University of Sydney and represented the first attempt to define the content and objectives of secondary school teaching in New South Wales. Despite being run by the University, the Senior exam was not used for university entrance: there were separate matriculation examinations held early each year for this.

Success in the ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ quickly became the measure of a school’s academic performance.  Summary results were published in a veritable ‘league table’ of schools and private tutors: a report in the Sydney Morning Herald of 11 January 1879 showed Newington with the third largest number of successful candidates in the previous year, after Sydney Grammar and Brisbane Grammar (the system included Queensland schools in the absence of a university there). Newington had six of the 42 successful candidates in the Senior and ten of the 239 successful Junior candidates. Newington students occupied three of the eleven places on the ‘Distinguished Order of Merit’, while another won the Silver Medal for Arithmetic.

From its very first year of publication (1884), The Newingtonian reported proudly on the Senior and Junior results, generally listing all the school’s successful candidates and their pass level in each subject. The growth of the school since the move to Stanmore was reflected in the number of successful candidates in the Junior — 22 out of 23 ‘sent up’ — as reported in the December 1884 issue. Two out of three passed the Senior.

In addition to prizes awarded by the University, Newington awarded its own prizes for success in these exams. Initially medals were awarded for passing; later they were limited to the best pass among the College’s candidates. A number of these medals are in the Archives collection: our photo shows the medal awarded to J Alfred Fletcher for passing the Junior in 1872. The Hardy Medal, now awarded for the best HSC result, was instituted in the 1880s for the best pass in the Senior.

The Senior and Junior exams ceased in 1916, following the phasing in of the Intermediate and Leaving Certificates over the previous five years. They were replaced in turn by the School and Higher School Certificates under the Wyndham Scheme in the 1960s.

Movember

This year, 11 staff members from Wyvern House have partnered with the SRC to form the Wyvern Mo Bro’s. Mo Findley, Mo Casham, Mo Scott, Mo Burke, Mo Cross, Mo Wilson, Mo Brayley, Mo Morphew, Mo Brunton, Mo Martin,  Mo Pollard and Mo Panday have all decided to grow their mo for the month of Movember. Also, Mo Bradford will be teaching with a variety of stick on mo’s as a ‘Mo Sista!’ Movember aims to raise money to create awareness for prostate cancer and depression amongst men. If you would like to support the Wyvern Mo Bros, please send a donation into one of the teachers as the SRC will have a collection jar going around to all classes. Otherwise you can log onto the Wyvern Mo Bro team page and support the mo bro’s at http://au.movember.com/team/704113 . All donations on the webpage are tax deductable.

Captain of the Wyvern Mo Bros, Mo Cross, discussed the importance of the event. “It really is great to be part of the Mo Bros at Wyvern. We are all pitching in for a great cause and it’s a great way to end a fantastic year! We are aiming for the gorilla – $1000 from the Wyvern Mo Bro’s towards this fantastic charity.”

Students will also be able to participate in the event too. On Friday the 30th Movember, Wyvern will be holding a “Mo! Ho Ho! Day”. On this day, with a gold coin donation, students will be able to wear stick on or paint on a Mo to support Movember. They will also be able to wear a Christmas tie, hat or socks with their school uniform to celebrate the festive season.

Please see your SRC representative, class teacher or Mo Brayley for more information.

Teachers featured above are Mr Jeremy Burke, Mr Peter Morphew and Mr Tony Cross.

Wyvern P&F News and Events

16 days until the 2012 Christmas Party

The 2012 Christmas Party will be an event not to be missed. The Kindy year group have made sure there will be plenty of fun and excitement on the night and also some lovely prizes at the Silent Auction. You may walk away with a full winter uniform for less than the retail price!! Send in your RSVP’s ASAP so we can get the catering right. There will be plenty of food, as we all know that is what the hubby’s come for and there will be plenty of dancing for the lovely mum’s of Wyvern. I look forward to celebrating with everyone. Get your year group together to come along and have some fun.

We are still in need of a Uniform Shop Convenor. This position is a fabulous position to hold as it has all the social aspects and not a lot of responsibility!! If you’re willing to take on the position you will find it fun and exciting. Please contact Julie Gigg via email djgigg@gmail.com to discuss further. We are offering a 50% discount on school uniforms to the Convenor for their commitment to the shop. The position would require you to work one day per week in the shop – that really is only 2 hours a week and some help when pre-planning for the year.

Look out for the Newington Monopoly: Limited Sesquicentenary Edition, click here for more information and order form. There is a limited amount of these specially designed boards being produced for Newington to celebrate our Sesquicentenary. Newington is the ONLY school in the Southern Hemisphere to engage in a project such as this. If you don’t order one this year they may be sold out. At $65 per board it is a really good Christmas present instead of the latest XBox game!!!!

There are also Cufflinks, Ties and Newington History books available. Order yours for quick delivery to the Wyvern Office.

Sesquicentenary Product of the Week: Newington History (Premium Edition)

This history of Newington College, commissioned for the 150th anniversary in 2013, stands upon the shoulders of Newington’s past historians. And yet it is a new history, and will take a somewhat different tack from previous histories.

Only 150 copies of the Premium Edition are available and copy No. 1 is being given to the College. Each of the remaining 149 numbered copies is personally signed by the author Dr Stephen Gapps, and is accompanied by a limited edition bookmark. A Message from Mr Holden

I have been very pleased to see all students maintain such good focus in classrooms over the first half of the term.  With so many activities in this busy last part of the year, it is particularly important for boys to sustain a positive commitment to all areas of school life. One area that I would like to see improved is boys wearing their school caps to and from school. The cap is very much part of the uniform, therefore, your support and attention to this requirement would be much appreciated.

Staff News

Ms Cathy Shugg, Visual Art teacher, has informed me that she will be leaving Wyvern at the end of the school year in order to be spend more time with her family. Since joining the school in 2007 Cathy has transformed Wyvern’s Art program into a vibrant and outstanding area of the school. Cathy has inspired Wyvern boys to appreciate practical and creative arts and has ignited many flames of creative passion for many students. Cathy will, of course, be sorely missed and we offer her every best wish for her future pathways.

I am delighted that following a rigorous recruitment process,  Mrs Meredith Buining will be joining us in 2013 as our 3-6 Visual Art Teacher. Mrs Buining is an experienced Art Educator as well as a professional artist and is currently working at Masada College in the primary school. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Buining to Wyvern next year.

I welcome Mrs Emma Clemens who has recently joined the Wyvern staff as our ICT Learning Integrator. Mrs Clemens brings significant teaching and technological expertise. Her  previous role was Curriculum Coordinator, Year 5 Teacher at the Covenant Christian School, Sydney.

Class Placement 2013

In the next two weeks I will be writing to parents informing you about your son’s class placement for 2013. We take enormous care when considering class placement of students for the next academic year. We always try to form balanced, purposeful and co-operative classes in which each boy is able to make excellent progress. In doing so, we take into account many different aspects of a student’s school life including;

  1. Academic ability and educational needs
  2. Relationships with other students
  3. Behaviour
  4. Personality
  5. Interests
  6. Pastoral needs
  7. Relevant information from parents (please note, the deadline for this was end of Term 3)

Students will meet their 2013 class teacher on “One Up” morning on Tuesday 4 December.

Wyvern Faith Matters

Don’t be a burden; be a burden-bearer

Everyone is hiding something, and it’s not because they’re deceptive. It’s just that some wounds are too private. When your husband is being insensitive and uncaring, the pain can be too deep to discuss. When your wife wounds you with acid words, you’re crushed inside but you can’t show it. So you both go off, lick your wounds and try to avoid the comments and questions of others.
Is that where you are today, struggling with something too painful to talk about? If so, realise that others are too! Their anger is a symptom. Their aloofness just hides their fear of being known and maybe rejected because they’ve been hurt before. Jesus saw the best in the worst of people and went out of His way to be gracious to them. Do you remember how He treated the woman ‘caught in the act’ of adultery? Public exposure! Can you imagine the depth of her shame? Yet Jesus saw someone worth saving, loved her, lifted her and gave her the strength to do better. We can do that too!
So remind yourself today that others are going through things you don’t know about. They’re crying tears you don’t see and feeling isolated in ways you can’t imagine. Don’t be a burden – be a burden-bearer! Indeed, you may be the only one who crosses their path today. And when you help lift their burden – God will lift yours!

‘Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.’

Mr Peter Morphew
Chaplain

Artist of the Week

K-2 Artist of the Week

Kindergarten
Jude Davidson explored the idea of a bird’s next in his art work. He managed to draw and smudge a nest using sweeping chalk pastel lines. The finished work included 3 neatly drawn and coloured eggs.

Year 2
John Gardener persevered to complete a beautifully woven mat using collections of recycled material. He is to be commended on the fine motor skills needed in this work.

Mrs Debbie Bourke
K-2 Art Teacher

Years 3-6 Artist of the Week

Benjamin Leung (Year 5) created his “Goldminer” sculpture by making a posed wire armature (“skeleton”), covering it with paper padding and then layers of plaster bandages. He mounted it on a plastered cardboard base, then carefully painted his work with thick impasto acrylic paint. As you can imagine, this process took many weeks of dedicated effort!

James Arfanis (Year 5) created his “Goldminer” relief print after studying photographic images of miners from the 1800s. He sketched his subject then transferred the drawn image to a foam printing plate, redrawing his miner heavily into the foam and adding textural details to create interest and contrast. He printed his image repeatedly using black block printing ink on different coloured heavy construction papers.
