Lucas Veloz in KL was Artist of the Week. Lucas created a wonderful windy day painting using a variety of brushstrokes. He then carefully cut and collaged a brightly coloured kite flying in the wind swept sky.

There will be no “grace period” as there was in Term 1 for boys without current passes, and they may be denied passage by the bus drivers.

Lest We Forget

On Wednesday the 10th of April the School Captain (Kieran Corcoran),Vice Captains (Callum Stewart and Miles Parhash) accompanied Mr Wood in attending the RSL and Schools Rememberance ANZAC Day service. The service took place in Hyde Park around the Pool of Remembrance. We caught the train from Stanmore to Museum Station and walked up through the park on a beautiful, warm and sunny day.

The service was run by students which included bands and choirs to accompany the many thought provoking songs. Many schools participated in the Schools Remember ANZAC Service, filling the stairs of the War Memorial with numerous and colourful Wreaths.

On Tuesday the 30th of April, Year 6 walked across to the Senior School to attend the Newington ANZAC Parade and Service. Our School Captain laid a Wreath with the Lindfield School Captain at the War Memorial. The service also signified the change of the Newington College Cadet Unit Colours. All those assembled were treated to a very insightful commentary from Lieutenant Colonel John Moore (ON ’53) and ANZAC address from Major Ross Wehby (ON ’98).

Both events were memorable occasions.

P and F News Events

WELCOME BACK TO TERM TWO

After 2 weeks of school holidays, I’m sure everyone will be grateful to get back into routine. This term will seem intense with so many things coming onto the P & F calendar, so ensure you have all the dates by checking Wyvern SPACES regularly.

Last term rounded off well with The Great Garden Party. Thank you to all the Year Parent Coordinators who pulled their teams together to make it a very successful day. The wonderful event as a ‘fun raising’ day is now  an annual event on our P & F calendar. A special thank you to our in house Pizza Chef, Rob Jablonski  (a Year 4 parent), who in the role of ‘Pizza Master’ cooked over 200 pizzas using  our very own pizza oven in the garden area. The pizzas were delicious and it was fantastic to see our oven in use.

Pictures from the afternoon have been loaded into the Wyvern P & F SPACES in the Galleries section. If you have any other photos of the afternoon to share please send to Julie@2xu.com and I can load them onto the P & F page.

Make sure your personal stylist has done your hair and makeup before you arrive in the morning as we have the Sesquicentenary Mother and Son Photo Booth in the hall to take a happy snap of you and your son/s. Please RSVP using the attached flyer so we obtain numbers for catering. Click here

A Message From Mr Holden

Welcome back to Term 2. I do hope you enjoyed some quality family time over the break.

NAPLAN

The attention in the early part of Term 2 will be on national assessments in literacy and numeracy (NAPLAN) for students in Years 3 and 5. The tests will be administered by our Year 3 and Year 5 teaching staff. Testing will take place over three days from Tuesday May 14 to Thursday May 16. Friday May 17 has been set aside as a make-up day for students who miss a section or who are absent on a particular test day. Attendance during the testing week is particularity important.

YEAR  6 Camp

Year 6 students and teachers departed on Wednesday morning for a 3 day outdoor education camp on the shores of Lake Macquarie. Such experiences are of enormous benefit to students. I thank staff in advance for the care of their boys whilst they are away.

SPACES

As Dr Mulford indicated in his recent letter to parents, the Newington SPACES secure intranet site is becoming the major communication link between current families and the College.  The vast majority of information about all aspects of Wyvern is regularly updated here. We are moving to on-line College Reports for Wyvern boys for Semester 2, 2013. Parents will need to be registered users and familiar with the relevant SPACES areas to access these reports. Please use the following link to access a simple information sheet showing the registration process. Click here for the SPACES user document.

ON-LINE TUCKSHOP ORDERING

Another feature of the Newington SPACES secure internet site is the ability to order meals from the Wyvern Tuckshop online. The system was recently trialed by the Wyvern P and F executive team and is now available via SPACES for parents to use. Please note that the current lunch ordering system will still be available for Term 2, but will be phased out from the start of Term 3.

STUDENT FREE DAY – FRIDAY 7 JUNE

As shown in the Term 2 calendar, on Friday 7 June the Wyvern campus will be having a Student Free Day. The teachers will be attending a professional learning day focusing on our Building Learning Power framework with the internationally renowned educator, Professor Guy Claxton. The school will be offering some limited supervision, via OSH Club, for any students who have brothers attending the senior campus – as it will be a normal school day for them. Please contact the Wyvern office on 95689444 to secure a place.

Finally, I respectfully remind parents of their obligation to put the safety of students first when dropping off and picking up their sons. As such I do request that all of our traffic rules (listed below) are adhered to. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

CAR PARK RULES

The following rules ensure the safe use of our car park drive through facility at pick up time.

To avoid lengthy queues forming in Harrow Road please do not arrive at the car park entrance before the following times:

  • 3:00pm for Years K-2 every day
  • 3:15pm for Years 3-6 on Tuesday, Thursday and  Friday
  • 3:25pm for Years 3-6 on Monday and Wednesday (sports training days)
  1. Do not get out of your car when dropping off or picking up your son.
  2. Ensure your son can leave and access your car via the left curb-side rear door.
  3. Cars are not allowed to wait in the car park. If for any reason your son is not in the car park at the end of the day you must leave via Cambridge Street and re-enter from Harrow Road.
  4. Parents who are picking up children at different times must leave via Cambridge Street and re-enter from Harrow Road.
  5. Observe all safety regulations, including new national child restraint laws for 0- 7 year olds, when travelling with young children in cars.

Please note that a bus zone operates at the front of the school at the following times:

  • 7:45am – 8:45am
  • 2:45pm – 3:45pm
